Artistic Philosophy:

To continue striving to capture unique images that reveal the beauty of our shrinking world, and to enhance these images in a classical manner, when warranted, by using the latest advances in digital imaging technology. Themes in photography include remote wilderness landscapes and wildlife, urban infrastructures (both decaying and contemporary), and serendipitous images from all areas of life. On the purely digital side, Charley's focus will be on designing strong sculptural pieces by forging virtual forms of metal and glass, and on creating futuristic scenes of other worlds, their architecture, and their spaceships.

Prose Summary:

Charley loves life and throws himself passionately into science, art, literature, education, environmental protection, and public outreach. Professionally, he was the Mission Design Manager for the Voyager Grand Tour flight of two robotic spacecraft to Jupiter and Saturn, with one continuing on to Uranus and Neptune. From 1989 until spring 1998, he was the Science and Mission Design Manager for the Cassini mission, an international adventure involving 18 different countries, returning to the Saturn kingdom in 2004 after a successful launch from Cape Canaveral on October 15, 1997.

Artistically, he is a devoted and experienced photographer of forty years, with creative digital imagery added within the past ten years. His outdoor photography has been influenced by Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, and he is compelled to journey to remote wilderness areas to capture the landscape and wildlife beauty before it is too late. In the digital area, he has been forging "virtual" sculptures, architecture, futuristic spaceships, remote worlds, and other 3D scenes on a computer and printing them in large format for special venues.

During the past decade, Charley's images have appeared in numerous venues. These include Sierra Magazine and other Sierra Club outlets; several one-year installations at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory; the world famous Pacific Design Center Showcase Idea House; 1994 Best of Photography Annual; various public buildings; international websites; and private galleries.

In literature, Charley has authored two books, numerous technical papers and popular magazine articles, and the leading computer graphics adventure game of the year in 1985. He is a Renaissance man trying to keep up with the fast-moving world, and hopes to always stay abreast of new knowledge and new techniques for creating and rendering images that speak to the human heart and imagination.
