Wet & Wild! Painting Vibrant Water Scenes
November 30 - December 4, 2009 (9 AM - 4 PM) — Learn how to make water look wet, reflective and splashy! Choosing oil, watercolor or acrylic as your primary medium, study water in its various forms: from a cascading waterfall to a babbling brook to glassy reflection. Painting water that looks wet requires some basic knowledge of the dynamics of how water moves and how objects are reflected in its shiny surface. Techniques will be demonstrated to address the various puzzles the artist is faced with when painting this stunning, fascinating - and yes, confusing - subject! Julie will provide photos for class use or you are welcome to use your own reference material. There will be demos in all three mediums, critique and lots of painting time.  Website: http://reg129.imperisoft.com/SAS/ProgramDetail/33373334/Registration.aspx

Painting with Bravura in Acrylics: Color, Composition, and Creativity
January 11-15, 2010 (9 AM - 4 PM) — Explore the magic of acrylics while painting a variety of subject matter using a variety of different techniques. Beginning transparently on paper, we'll work our way up to painting opaquely on canvas. As we journey, we'll have adventurous discoveries with intriguing textures, creating personal symbols, and exploring color harmonies. We'll layer transparent washes for subtlety, and we'll use saturated flat color for drama. We'll experiment one day with painting on colored gesso for unexpected and surprising results. Spontaneous starts with realistic finishes will enhance your understanding of the versatility of acrylics. There will be demonstrations, personal attention, and class critiques. Please bring one painting that represents your current style and subject matter. Principles of Painting
January 11-15, 2010 (9 AM - 4 PM) — This workshop is an intense five days of inspiration, hard work and productive learning. The main principles Moore covers are design, color, composition, and edges. Beginning with slide lectures in the morning, he isolates each element with the help of computer technology and focuses on a different principle each day. Lectures are followed by painting exercises and/or demonstrations of the principles being taught. Students are encouraged to apply lessons to subject matter of their choice, whether landscapes, still life, or figure. Exercises are geared toward learning the principles, not toward producing a finished painting.  Website: http://reg129.imperisoft.com/SAS/ProgramDetail/33373436/Registration.aspx

How to Plan a Painting: A Design Boot Camp
January 13 - March 3, 2010 (Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30 PM) — Robert Henri said "a good painting is a remarkable feat of organization". Get ready to explore the first and foremost demand of picture making - good design. Composition is not being able to fit your subject matter on the canvas. Good composition is creating a beautiful and dynamic visual statement through the adaptation of an intentional plan - a coordination of parts to produce a harmonious whole. Intent and purpose trumps all particulars in the planning of a painting. The artist will go on an exploration of all the elements of picture making: proportion, dominance, subordination, movement, creating emphasis, and space. We will exploit the elements of art: value, line, texture, shape and color in our search for a unity of effect.  Website: http://reg129.imperisoft.com/SAS/ProgramDetail/33383437/Registration.aspx

Learning to Paint What You See
January 25-29, 2010 (9 AM - 4 PM) — This week of intensive study is aimed at helping the artist to see first then learn to translate the subject into the medium of paint. Seeing the end, knowing what you are after and how, will determine the way you travel there. Making a clear statement and defining your intentions comes from a solid foundation of the basic vocabulary of painting. How the principles of light work to create value and color relationships, edges, gradations and three-dimensional forms are some areas of study where we will work hard. Once the artist has a grasp of the foundational aspects of painting, they will find a freedom that allows for a clear communication and an open path to creating. Acrylic Painting Techniques and Applications
January 27 - April 7, 2010; no class March 10 (Wednesdays, 6:30-9pm) — Unique qualities and techniques associated with acrylic painting are the focus of this course. Acrylic paint has gone through a remarkable transformation over the past 20 years. Due to unprecedented research by artists and paint manufacturers, the new acrylic paints and mediums are more diverse in their applications, easier to use, and safer than other paints. Acrylic is an extremely flexible and varied material that can range from washes to glazes to the thickest of impasto. Our discussions include: paint properties, application techniques, direct and indirect painting processes, color mixing, mark-making, glazing and scumbling, and the use of painting mediums and varnishes. A personal approach to subject matter, materials and techniques is encouraged. (Previous drawing experience required).  Website: http://www.ringling.edu/cssp

WIFAS presents Making a Painting Work with Ned Mueller
March 26-28, 2010 — A good painting is a very personal statement by the artist and tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. We will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together, from the first concept, to small idea, value or color studies to a more finished product. Weather permitting students may work outside if they choose as the boat center has a multitude of great painting subjects. The emphasis will not be so much on a finished painting as the process of achieving it. Most paintings are ruined at the start because of little thought and idea of what to paint and how one will do it. We will work on color harmony and the balance of shapes and edges in size, value and color.  Website: http://www.whidbeyislandfas.com

How To Create Unique and Meaningful Art
June 22-25, 2010 — Escape the ordinary and paint the extraordinary. Because all great paintings begin with a great concept, students first learn how to develop a concept for their own paintings by using an effective method developed by Kathy. The next step is to translate that concept into a working thesis, or artist's statement. Kathy then demonstrates how to use that thesis to create a series of paintings that is uniquely meaningful, technically consistent and masterful. Daily instruction is followed by student engagement in this think - write - paint - share workshop. Kathy teaches with warmth, humor, enthusiasm, and insight. As an experienced teacher and award-winning artist, she is able to help students develop and improve technical skills in painting as well as concept development.  Website: http://www.gibsonhousebb.com/

Self-Study Painting Courses: Design & Composition
Begin your course any time — This module introduces all the basic concepts in design and composition. We cover all the key principles and illustrate them with both examples of how to do it, and how not to do it. These courses cover important principles such as: how to layout the space in your painting effectively, how to increase the interest in your painting, how to control your viewer's eye movement, and how to utilize design elements effectively. A solid understanding of the principles in this module is essential to the visual music of your work. Website: Virtual Art Academy® art instruction

Self-Study Painting Courses: Color
Begin your course any time — Color is what makes a painting exciting, and color harmony is what makes a painting beautiful. However, color is a complex topic and takes years to master. Here are some of the things you will learn: Grays: how to use them to make your color stand out; Color notans: exploring color strategies faster; Complementary, analogous, triadic, and tonal color schemes; how to diagnose color harmony problems; The Munsell color wheel: how to get more accurate complements; Pigment biases: how to use biases to get purer colors; Limited palettes: how to get color harmonies quickly; and Color dragging. Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Website: Virtual Art Academy® art instruction

Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.
