"100 Drawings, Paintings, and Explorations"
August 28 - September 1, 2017

How do you make good art? How do you make art that is truly yours? Jane's view is that there are no tricks, gimmicks, or shortcuts to this elusive goal: it just takes a lot of art making to cultivate your inner awareness of who you are as an artist. Fortunately, making a lot of art is fun, if you can let go of the expectations and negative voices (that inner critic!) that get in your way. In this workshop we will focus on quantity – making a lot of pieces from a given starting point. By focusing on quantity, you begin to let go of the constant judgment and evaluation.

"Elements of Landscape"
October 14-21, 2017

The inspiration for this course is the writing of 18th century French painter P. H. Valenciennes. In his famous treatise on open air painting published in 1800 Valenciennes advocated the separate study of the individual “elements” of landscape. “Elements” is organized around morning slide shows focusing on one element of landscape: fields, trees, clouds and skies, water, time and nocturnes. Daily presentations will be followed by painting sessions dedicated to the subject element. No formal technical instruction is offered but two instructors will be available to work with participants individually. Daily reviews of work. "Exploring the Light of Tonalism"
November 18-19, 2017

A tonalist landscape painting typically portrays a twilight sky setting behind hills, meadows and trees, filling the painting with solitude and peaceful warmth. Some have even said that Tonalism carries the fragrance of the spiritual dimension. Tonalism began in 1880’s with the explorations of George Inness, James McNeil Whistler and others. In this workshop you will learn how to create a tonalist color palette, and how to simplify your compositional structure. In a friendly and nonjudgemental classroom environment there will be a balance of structured lessons with a flexibility that accommodates the natural pace and expression of each student. Although tonalism originated with landscape painting, you will also learn how it can be applied to still life and urban subjects.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan"
Begin your course any time

Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork"
Begin your course any time

Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music"
Begin your course any time

In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting.
