"Niagara Falls- Finding your focus outdoors"
May 10-11, 2018

I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. A better solution is not to paint a specific subject, instead, look for 'light'. An ordinary object in the right light becomes extraordinary! When you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finish what you can do to make the painting more exciting. Learn to find a strong composition, value pattern, and you'll learn how to work with color temperature for atmospheric effects.

"Art and Science in the 18th Century"
Mondays, July 9 - August 6, 2018

Until about 1800, “science” included not only the fields we expect: biology, chemistry, and what is now called physics, but also medicine and technology. Illustrations, paintings, and even simple line drawings had the power to communicate science to a large audience. This course examines the intersection of art and science during the eighteenth century. Topics include print culture, production of “archetypal” images, circulation of knowledge, and ideas of the Enlightenment. Dr. Sivitz teaches in the Department of History at Idaho State University, where he specializes in early America, the Atlantic World, Race and Slavery, the social history of disease and medicine, and the circulation of knowledge in the eighteenth century. His art historical interests span the early modern period, particularly the themes of science, medicine, and political commentary.

"Niagara on the Lake - Finding your focus outdoors"
July 16-17, 2018

I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. A better solution is not to paint a specific subject, instead, look for 'light'. An ordinary object in the right light becomes extraordinary! When you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finish what you can do to make the painting more exciting. Learn to find a strong composition, value pattern, and you'll learn how to work with color temperature for atmospheric effects.

"Still Life: Structure and Variation"
July 16-20, 2018

Still life will be the starting point for exploration of pictorial structure, space and invention. This will lead us to create images in the simplest terms: a series of shapes and colors made of paint (not a beach ball or a flower). We will generate permutations of the chosen motif through reduction and analysis. As we walk the line between accuracy and abstraction, we will see through and around the meaning of things to grasp relationships between objects and space. Mediums will include graphite, charcoal, ink, acrylic or oil paint, and collage. The personal voice of each painter will come through in the diverse results. Looking at historical and contemporary still life paintings will place the practice in a larger context.

"One Thousand Collages Abstraction and the Figure - Without a Model"
August 3-5, 2018

An exploration of pure abstraction and the abstraction in the figure through collage. We will draw and paint by means of collage. What we put down on paper are real things that we can adjust, just as we pose the model in our studio. It is this abstraction that we must adjust if we are working purely abstractly or if we are working from life. Next, we will move into the third dimension and make figures from corrugated cardboard. We will work with them and, with our rediscovered freedom, without them. All on a path away from copying and rendering towards a more exciting, and ultimately, a more real picture of what we find beautiful in the human figure and the world.

"Niagara Falls- Finding your focus outdoors"
September 24-25, 2018

I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. A better solution is not to paint a specific subject, instead, look for 'light'. An ordinary object in the right light becomes extraordinary! When you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finish what you can do to make the painting more exciting. Learn to find a strong composition, value pattern, and you'll learn how to work with color temperature for atmospheric effects.

"Transformations in Oil and Cold Wax"
September 28-29, 2018

Creating abstract art with oil paint and cold wax medium involves taking a journey into yourself and your world --without a map. The process is intuitive, bold and full of discovery. Your pieces will take on lives of their own through the many layers of oil and cold wax you apply, addition of mixed media elements, and the areas you choose to scrape away. There are many opportunities for happy accidents and unexpected joys. Each oil and cold wax piece is a result of a moment in time and space where elements converge in a one-time-only way.

We'll examine writing speed, pressure, the directions of strokes, and the relationship between letters for making effective textures. Study of layering, tones, basic design layout and composition, and use of line and space in Japanese calligraphy will be presented for creating evocative textural art pieces.

This workshop is about painting the clothed figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. Working on a toned ground, we’ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we block in two simple values: light and dark tone. After that we begin adding mid-tones. By learning to simplify form, values and color, we begin to interpret and break down the figure into more understandable tones and shapes instead of becoming distracted by details.
