Encaustic Mixed Media
May 29 - June 1, 2017 (9 am - 4 pm) — In this workshop we will start to explore the mixed media side of encaustic. The luminous surface is what will usually draw an artist to want to begin to work with it, however, the range of applications from painting, collage, sculpture, and printmaking is what keeps artists engaged. We will experiment with other materials that can be mixed in, with discussions of durability and safety. Topics to be covered will include painting, collage, image transfers, embedding found materials, and much more! General discussions on studio set up and safety will be covered, as well as presentation options for finished work. Experience with encaustic is not needed for this workshop; however, prior art marking experience will be helpful. Visit website

If The Shoe Fits: Mixed Media Assemblage Workshop
August 25, 2017 (10am–5pm) — The saying goes “If the shoe fits wear it.” If it doesn’t fit …well… I say, make art with it. Shoes are very intimate accessories that are generally taken for granted. They separate us from the ground. They protect us from the elements. They are a part of our daily lives. If they could talk, they would have rich histories to tell. The shoe, then, is our starting point to create visual stories. Their deep recesses have potential to hold so much meaning and inspiration. This is an introduction to the art of assemblage, using everyday discarded and recycled objects to create a shrine assemblage. You will learn basic construction techniques as well as how to develop themes and narrative. Visit website

100 Drawings, Paintings, and Explorations
August 28 - September 1, 2017 (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM) — How do you make good art? How do you make art that is truly yours? Jane's view is that there are no tricks, gimmicks, or shortcuts to this elusive goal: it just takes a lot of art making to cultivate your inner awareness of who you are as an artist. Fortunately, making a lot of art is fun, if you can let go of the expectations and negative voices (that inner critic!) that get in your way. In this workshop we will focus on quantity – making a lot of pieces from a given starting point. By focusing on quantity, you begin to let go of the constant judgment and evaluation. Visit website

Mixed Media Encaustic: Line and Grid
September 5-8, 2017 (9:30am-4pm with 1/2 hour break) — Taught from an alternative, experimental approach. The materials have a lot of inherent interest, as they are shapes cut from paperback book covers, and students find it easy to begin arranging them. We talk about design principles and what makes a design work better, throughout the day as I come by and work with students individually. Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
