You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up, working in a series, mixing and utilizing neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts. We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! There’ll be plenty of time for “playing” and creating along with individual attention and guidance.

"Sashiko: Japanese Hand Stitching for Beginners"
March 22, 2018

Sashiko (literally “little stabs”) is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear or to repair worn places or tears with patches, this running stitch technique is often used for purely decorative purposes in quilting and embroidery. Sashiko embroidery was used to strengthen the homespun clothes of olden times. Worn out clothes were pieced together to make new garments by using simple running stitches. These clothes increased their strength with this durable embroidery. Modern day sashiko stitching is not restricted to the traditional indigo colored fabric but uses a variety of color combinations, and it is considered a beautiful surface embellishment for fabrics.

"Realistic Watercolor Landscapes"
June 1-2, 2018

Learn to paint the dogwood tree and incorporate it into realistic watercolor landscapes. Using both wet-in-wet technique and detailed dry brush, Alan Shuptrine will teach how to literally “sculpt” a floral subject into a painting from back to front, and utilize the white of the paper to create dramatic light and shadow. Unlike most watercolorists who gradually add pigment to paper (from light-to-dark), Shuptrine was influenced by Andrew Wyeth, and his father, Hubert Shuptrine, who painted from dark-to-light, much like an oil painter. Don’t miss this unique opportunity! Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. On view at the Huntsville Museum of Art – Alan Shuptrine: Appalachian Watercolors of the Serpentine Chain from May 13 to August 5, 2018.

"Venetian Plaster and Acrylic Mixed Media Paintings"
July 12-15, 2018

Venetian Plaster plays well with acrylics, and here is the secret: one stays put when wet and the other can be removed. Simple, but there are many tips and tricks for combining the two. We are going to learn how to apply the plaster onto fabrics and then crackle the surface. You will learn how to create a background on panel using acrylic gels and pastes, layer color, add plaster and then start excavating. It is like a treasure hunt. I love this because it uses both sides of the creative brain. You follow the techniques, but then you intuitively layer and excavate. These techniques may be applied to any painting style.

"Still Life: Structure and Variation"
July 16-20, 2018

Still life will be the starting point for exploration of pictorial structure, space and invention. This will lead us to create images in the simplest terms: a series of shapes and colors made of paint (not a beach ball or a flower). We will generate permutations of the chosen motif through reduction and analysis. As we walk the line between accuracy and abstraction, we will see through and around the meaning of things to grasp relationships between objects and space. Mediums will include graphite, charcoal, ink, acrylic or oil paint, and collage. The personal voice of each painter will come through in the diverse results. Looking at historical and contemporary still life paintings will place the practice in a larger context.

"Abstract Acrylic Painting and the Spirit in Nature"
July 16-19, 2018

In this 4 day workshop you will practice abstract acrylic painting techniques that are connected to the spirit in nature. We will begin by identifying our spiritual and emotional connection to the four elements earth, air, fire and water. We will identify how each of these elements is sensed and perceived and then translated into abstract painting. Instruction will include demonstrations in acrylic painting techniques including painting with rust to create the patina of age, sumi ink and Stabillo pencils to create expressive mark making, handmade stenciling and printing to create patterns. The results are alive, authentic and exhilarating. Unveil the mysteries of abstraction by practicing techniques in form, rhythm and motion. Each student will receive individual instruction and group critique.

"One Thousand Collages Abstraction and the Figure - Without a Model"
August 3-5, 2018

An exploration of pure abstraction and the abstraction in the figure through collage. We will draw and paint by means of collage. What we put down on paper are real things that we can adjust, just as we pose the model in our studio. It is this abstraction that we must adjust if we are working purely abstractly or if we are working from life. Next, we will move into the third dimension and make figures from corrugated cardboard. We will work with them and, with our rediscovered freedom, without them. All on a path away from copying and rendering towards a more exciting, and ultimately, a more real picture of what we find beautiful in the human figure and the world.

Beginning with a group discussion of previously completed work as a point of departure, Steven will share his own experience as an artist and educator and how they inform one another. Slideshows, discussions, and critique will supplement independent work and one-on-one interaction. "Abstract Explorations in Acrylic Painting"
August 20-23, 2018

If the word “experimentation” causes your artistic juices to start flowing, then this is the workshop for you. Jo bases her fun filled workshop on the belief that if you approach your art with a playful attitude, you will be more apt to keep making art, and the more art you make, the better your art will be. To facilitate this attitude of experimentation and exploration, you will be creating small “practice samples” that are no larger than 10” x 10”. By working in this small manner, you will have more freedom to enjoy the process, learn the technique, and move away from your usual way of working. Jo will ignite your passion for “possibility” and rekindle your joy in the painting process.

"Alla Prima Clothed Figure & Portrait Painting"
October 18-21, 2018

This workshop is about painting the clothed figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. Then students will paint from the model. For the portrait, we’ll talk about the overall shape of the head and placing the features. Working on a toned ground, we’ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we block in two simple values: light and dark tone. After that we begin adding mid-tones. By learning to simplify form, values and color, we begin to interpret and break down the figure into more understandable tones and shapes instead of becoming distracted by details. Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced. Visit davidshevlino.com.
