Building Landscape Harmony with Color Strategies, Limited Palettes and Color Groups
May 6 & 7, 2017 (9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) — Landscape is an endless source of color inspiration, yet successful landscape painting is only partially about referencing the colors we see in nature. More often than not, a successful depiction of landscape light is based on the implementation of a color strategy or “color plan.” Although we will reference photos in this workshop, we never copy photographic color; instead, we learn to build color harmony by becoming color strategists and inventors. You can work with your own photographs or work with those provided by the instructor. This is not a class for first-time painters; however, it is ideally suited for plein air or studio landscape painters who want to expand their color vocabulary. Visit website

This course will take participants through the entire process of creating a strong landscape painting: from building an effective composition to working with value and color and, finally, to finishing with sensitively chosen details. Landscapes Imagined and Observed
July 10-11, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Driven by playful exploration, this workshop will examine the visual language of the landscape. Utilizing strategies to simplify compositions, distill imagery, and invent space, you will create a series of plein air sketches and paintings to later be used as reference for abstraction and experimentation in the studio. You will begin by documenting the surrounding landscape while working on-site with sketching and painting materials; exploring composition and identifying value and color. You will then bring your observed work into the studio to use as inspiration for landscapes of your own imagining. A lecture and series of exercises will help you select your favorite moments from the plein air works, such as palette combinations, shapes, mark-making, or imagery, to inform a new painting.
