"Essentials of Composition for Representational Painters"
March 16-18, 2018

For many artists, composition remains the most elusive area of their practice. Why? Because its energies are fundamentally abstract and often hidden beneath the surface of the painting. The goal of this workshop is to make the invisible visible — to discover the underlying energies that drive a composition. We will take a “real world” approach to composition by learning to work with the shapes and forces we actually see. Working from both photographs and life, with practical exercises, ongoing critiques, and analysis of master compositions, you will learn: how value differences are used to identify the shapes a composition is built upon; the essential principle of intervals; the power of the “picture window” in selection and arrangement; movement and directional energy; and how to activate negative space.

Towards that end, the student will spend the first day of class painting from Nicolai Fechin’s Sunflowers. In that capacity, the student will get a more complete understanding of the basis of Great Paintings (value, color, temperature, edges, and of course composition). On the second day, the students will set up their own still life of Sunflowers, keeping in mind the principles they learned. In this way the student and the teacher will take a journey of learning and understanding to make great paintings. Judith will demonstrate along the way. Students can work in oil or pastel.

"Painting in Spain: Pastel Workshop"
April 30 - May 7, 2018

Painting “en plein air” means being fully present to the experience of painting on location. As you observe and paint, every sight, sound, smell, and experience in the environment becomes part of your painting. That’s part of the joy that comes with working from life rather than a photo. We’ll go through the process of creating on location step-by-step, from choosing what you’re going to paint, to simplifying the scene, to drawing up a thumbnail, to blocking in the big shapes, and then to adding detail. We’ll go over the importance of understanding values and how this knowledge can liberate your colour choices and interpretation of a scene. The workshop is suitable for all levels but some experience with drawing and pastels would be helpful.

"Plein Air & Studio Workshop"
May 22-24, 2018

Painting the landscape in the studio and in the field each has its own limitations. As landscape artists, our objective must be to learn how to best utilize the advantages, and how to compensate for the inherent disadvantages, of each. This workshop will take place in both in the studio and at a nearby outdoor location, and students will practice exercises that will focus on the skills most crucial to each venue. Much of what we'll cover will emphasize simplifying the landscape into a concise visual message, looking past the overwhelming details of the landscape, especially in the beginning stages, and composing a well-edited painting. Instructor demos will be in the studio, and will include both oil and pastel.

"The Contemporary Impressionist Landscape"
June 3-5, 2018

In many ways, Impressionism still defines the way contemporary landscape painters approach color. The Impressionists filled their paintings with brilliant color and created an entirely new coloristic metaphor for depicting natural light. In this workshop, you will learn the key to working with this “color-priority” system: that in order for the purer colors to serve as a stand-in for the luminosity of natural light, darker tonalities are rejected in favor of lighter-value colors. Strong value contrasts are replaced by color contrasts. Impressionists worked from life, but in this workshop, we will work from photographs, in the more controlled environment of the studio, where you will be able to absorb lessons at a comfortable pace. Suitable for oil, acrylic, pastel or watercolor.

"Etruscan Places Elements of Landscape"
June 16-23, 2018

The inspiration for this course is the writing of 18th century French painter P. H. Valenciennes. Daily presentations will be followed by painting sessions dedicated to the subject element. No formal technical instruction is offered but two instructors will be available to work with participants individually. Daily reviews of work.
