"Landscape in the Studio"
April 26-28, 2018

Artists will receive challenging group and individualized instruction in studio painting. Dee will observe the artists’ works and help them to improve rather than change their individual styles. The emphasis will be on learning to see value changes, color temperatures, and composition. We will be building arrangements of abstract shapes that will form a strong foundation for the painting. There will be extensive studies on color temperature and value that will make the students’ paintings “sing” and vibrate with evocative color. The remainder of the day will be spent painting and Dee will be working with artists on an individual basis. Instruction will be with oils, however all mediums are welcome.

"Painting in Spain: Pastel Workshop"
April 30 - May 7, 2018

Painting “en plein air” means being fully present to the experience of painting on location. As you observe and paint, every sight, sound, smell, and experience in the environment becomes part of your painting. That’s part of the joy that comes with working from life rather than a photo. We’ll go through the process of creating on location step-by-step, from choosing what you’re going to paint, to simplifying the scene, to drawing up a thumbnail, to blocking in the big shapes, and then to adding detail. We’ll go over the importance of understanding values and how this knowledge can liberate your colour choices and interpretation of a scene. The workshop is suitable for all levels but some experience with drawing and pastels would be helpful.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan"
Begin your course any time

Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork"

Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music"
Begin your course any time

In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting.
