We will discuss how to organize and simplify complex information, how to have a unified sense of light throughout the picture and how to perceive color and tone relationships. We will also cover aspects of drawing that will help in the creation of a convincing sense of space. Students are welcome to bring their own objects or work with objects on hand at the center.

"A Conversation with The Landscape, a Pastel Workshop"
May 1-3, 2024

Really getting to know a landscape, instead of just identifying elements of it, makes us better, more sensitive landscape painters. Each landscape has a personality and something to say. It’s when we begin to really understand why a landscape draws us in and captures our imagination that we become better able to advance from simply copying the obvious aspects of the landscape to incorporating mood and atmosphere and those hard-to-define qualities that take a landscape painting from average to extraordinary. The studio portion of this workshop will focus on learning ways to create paintings that have their own voice, and the optional plein air day will focus on gathering thoughts and information, along with creating small paintings for future reference material.

Location: Hilton Head, South Carolina
Instructor: Lyn Asselta

Thankfully for artists, nature is not just blue skies. In this workshop, learn to create the subtle mysterious effects of mist and haze in your pastel landscape. Emphasis will be on use of tonal values, atmospheric perspective, planes in the landscape and handling of edges. The workshop will begin with a one-hour demo, followed by a tonal value exercise before beginning your pastel masterpiece. Each attendee will have plenty of instruction at their easel. Working from your own photos of mist and haze is encouraged. Each day attendees will leave with a finished painting. I will provide hand-outs for each attendee and specific books I love and refer to.

"Painting the Portrait in Pastel"
February 14-16, 2025

Karen will lead students through her process of painting the pastel portrait. She will begin with teaching strategies to accurately draw the head, place the features and indicate the major light and shadow shapes. Karen will then demonstrate how to identify and lay in "average colors" of the shadow and light regions. She will show how she adjusts her general color notes by mixing and layering to "turn the color dials" on hue, value, temperature and chroma to achieve the desired relationships. During the final phase of the portrait, she will introduce techniques such as scumbling, glazing and hatching as she carefully makes corrections, refines edges and creates subtle nuances to bring the portrait to a polished finish.

I am so excited to teach you in this inspiring place while working outdoors in Plein Air as the Impressionist masters did! Paint the crystal blue Mediterranean waters with breathtaking vistas of the Catalonia coast, a hidden gem fishing village, botanical gardens, and medieval villages. As a painter and colorist, I have learned that the best way to achieve the feeling of light and color in your paintings is to paint outdoors. I will be your guide and teacher for an incredible week of painting, sightseeing, dining, and artistic community while we all learn and grow our artistry during the week. The experience of painting with other artists will be a treasure you carry with you for a lifetime.
