"Essentials of Composition for Representational Painters"
March 16-18, 2018

For many artists, composition remains the most elusive area of their practice. Why? Because its energies are fundamentally abstract and often hidden beneath the surface of the painting. The goal of this workshop is to make the invisible visible — to discover the underlying energies that drive a composition. We will take a “real world” approach to composition by learning to work with the shapes and forces we actually see. Working from both photographs and life, with practical exercises, ongoing critiques, and analysis of master compositions, you will learn: how value differences are used to identify the shapes a composition is built upon; the essential principle of intervals; the power of the “picture window” in selection and arrangement; movement and directional energy; and how to activate negative space.

"The Contemporary Impressionist Landscape"
June 3-5, 2018

In many ways, Impressionism still defines the way contemporary landscape painters approach color. The Impressionists filled their paintings with brilliant color and created an entirely new coloristic metaphor for depicting natural light. In this workshop, you will learn the key to working with this “color-priority” system: that in order for the purer colors to serve as a stand-in for the luminosity of natural light, darker tonalities are rejected in favor of lighter-value colors. Strong value contrasts are replaced by color contrasts. Impressionists worked from life, but in this workshop, we will work from photographs, in the more controlled environment of the studio, where you will be able to absorb lessons at a comfortable pace. Suitable for oil, acrylic, pastel or watercolor.

"Landscapes on the Loose"
June 19-20, 2018

In this workshop students will learn: Ways to create bold, loose and impetuous paintings and not pains-taking ones; How to use the important “artistic license” to suggest trees, rocks, beaches, branches, grasses, fields, flowers, skies and water; About aerial perspective to keep things loose and easy; To identify what attracts them to that landscape and then how to translate that focus into a painting; How to remove clutter — and add space; To recognize barriers to seeing creatively and free up visual exploration. Students will have time to work on their own with plenty of support as they gain insight into a new way of looking at loosening up landscape paintings.

"Painting the Impressionist Landscape"
August 1-4, 2018

Lois’ class will focus on developing color perception, using rich color for expressing atmosphere and light. She will encourage better control of masses and values, while showing how color also enhances design in your painting compositions. Lois’ workshop is based on her book, and her system, that teaches how to interpret light in landscape and incorporating it into your painting with amazingly quick results. Lois believes in the importance of strong and colorful starts as the foundation for great color in painting. She starts each morning and afternoon painting session with a demo explaining exactly what to look for and how to proceed; carefully building from each lesson to make the learning curve easier and concise.
