"Super Realism"

Create hyper realistic paintings in the tradition of 60s and 70s greats Chuck Close, Robert Bechtel and Audrey Flack. Learn photo-realistic oil painting techniques of image projection, depth of field, soft and sharp focus edges, and selective enhancement while working from your own photo references. Drawing and painting experience is required for this advanced painting class. Includes a visit to Chuck Close Photographs, on view in the PAFA museum through April 8.

"Drawing from Photographs"

The photograph can be a helpful resource to the artist, not only for capturing fleeting subjects, but also for creating varied visual and optical effects. Learn to incorporate photographic elements including depth of field, distortion, focus and contrast into drawing from life and your own source material. Includes discussions about photo-based art, and a visit to Chuck Close Photographs, on view in the PAFA museum through April 8. All levels welcome.

"A Stroll Through the Galleries: Brain Health and the Power of Art"
4 Thursdays: February 1, March 1, April 5 & May 3
 

Viewing and discussing art stimulates the brain to build new pathways and help with memory loss. Dona Duncan, registered Art Therapist, will facilitate small group discussions about artworks in the PAFA museum, as well as participants’ thoughts and feelings, in a comfortable, homey atmosphere. Learn about the artists’ life stories and painting styles, as you practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Feel free to sketch if you wish! Continue the conversion in the PAFA Café over a coffee or snack – like an art club!

"Portrait Photography"

Experiment with a variety of styles of portrait photography, including street, studio, family, candid, narrative, and staged. Use both historical and contemporary methods to explore a personal theme or interest. Learn how to think creatively about how lighting and composition can change the meaning of a photograph. "Plein Air Painting on the Delaware"

Paint the spectacular views of the Delaware River from the Independence Seaport Museum at Penn’s Landing. Museum access offers the opportunity to tour the collection, see boat builders in action, and access the facilities. Includes a session on the river in the museum’s excursion boat, à la Claude Monet! "Plein Air Painting at Bartram's Garden"

Work en plein air at historic Bartram’s Garden, home of America’s first botanist, John Bartram. Learn to capture light and shadow; create a convincing sense of space; and depict trees, flowers and buildings. Drawing and painting techniques will be demonstrated for oil and gouache. "Painting on the Brandywine"

Portray the autumn landscape en plein air in the medium of your choice along the banks of the picturesque Brandywine River. Bring a packed lunch or eat at Hank’s, a longtime haunt of Andrew Wyeth’s. The day concludes with a visit to the Brandywine River Museum (free admission on the first Sunday of the month). Free parking, restrooms and sheltered locations available.
