"The Still Life: From Drawing to Painting"

This workshop will focus on the different stages of capturing a still life with particular attention to accurate drawing and color. Hone your individual skills as you address formal and technical concerns within your work through various approaches to the subject matter. Engaging in the process from beginning to end, you will design and light a still life with the goal of achieving balance and rhythm. Color temperature will be addressed, as there will be a setup in warm light and one in cool light. From there, you will gain hand-on practice composing and drawing from the still life in charcoal. Color will be added using either oil paint or pastel.

"Experimental Landscape: From Outside to Inside"

This multimedia workshop will focus on ways that artists can engage with the landscape and outdoor environment. Explore methods to examine, document, and translate your experiences from outside to the studio. The first day of this workshop will emphasize observation – walking, sitting, listening, touching, looking - in various locations and from various vantages within Peninsula State Park, followed by time to record and document. On the second day, meet in the studio to share, organize, and construct artworks using your documentation as the raw material. Be prepared to spend a day outside, no matter the conditions. "Plein Air Painting: The Architecture of Light"

This watercolor workshop is open to artists of all levels. The theme of this workshop is finding the dialogue between the architecture of man and the architecture of nature, and how to see compositions in the most grand and most humble of scenes. During this class, you will explore the endlessly compelling compositional possibilities on these topics. You will also cover the basics of perspective composition and fundamentals of drawing, and see how these basics are the root of a successful painting. Simple black and white pencil sketches from site observation, or from photographs will be completed, and you will discuss how the three basic values, black/white/grey can be arranged to form the basis of a final watercolor painting.

"Watercolor Trees and Landscapes"

"Plein Air Painting: The How and Why of Landscape Painting"

Working on location started hundreds of years ago as a way of studying the mutable effects of weather and atmosphere and to help painters develop a closer, truer and more intimate relationship with nature. "Open Studios"
November thru April
 

Make room for your creativity this winter. This is the time we open our light-filled, generously appointed studios to individuals and groups in search of a space for self-directed creativity. Some groups have even made it an annual tradition! You're free to utilize special equipment like potter's wheels, jewelry torches, an etching press, or substantial easels for large-scale work. If you have special equipment or studio needs, please let us know ahead of time. Shared studio space is available for rent Tuesday through Saturday. Enjoy the luxury of an expansive workspace without having to set up or take down your materials during the continuous length of your rental. Other amenities include unlimited complementary hot coffee in our Guenzel Gallery and full kitchen privileges.
