A visual exploration of composition and the artistic principles through collage art. Collage most often suggests an idea as it helps develop a narrative, but when combined with CWM/oil paint, it allows for much experimentation through transparencies, opacity and texture. Presentations, art theory discussions and pin-up critique will allow for everyone to understand and develop their design narratives. Participants learn to create different layered abstractions and dynamic works by combining various elements and techniques.

Abstract geometric art is about hidden meanings, analogies, protests and deliberate simplification to prove that everything complicated is simple. We will discuss how, by looking inwardly, we can create personal narratives. Geometry plays a significant role in art and design, often carrying symbolic interpretations beyond its visual form. Geometric shapes and patterns are not just aesthetic elements but can also evoke specific emotions.

Monochrome painting is art composed in a single color. It utilizes various shades or tints, so the images become incredibly evocative and most importantly what you lose in not using color you’ll gain in quality of composition and contrast. Color is no longer a distraction. The focus is on the overall composition. Also mark-making is improved by enabling the discovery of different forms and shapes with subtle tones. Painting with a single color can improve your art because it makes you concentrate on elements such as line, value, lighting and form.

Join renowned watercolor artist Jeannie Vodden in the magical art world of Santa Fe. Students will enjoy an in-studio experience each day painting a portrait of their choice, or following along as Jeannie demonstrates… and then will explore a wonderful area of Santa Fe each afternoon. Jeannie’s watercolors are marked by the use of a limited palette of staining transparent primary colors. She works from large gentle washes of color to more specific detail (large to small/general to specific, a technique known as indirect painting). Her use of glazing layer over layer gives a translucent lifelike feeling to her paintings, while her interest in luminescence guides her choice of subject matter and the quality of light in her work.

Join us for 4 full days of sketching in beautiful Santa Fe! Sarah’s focus is primarily in travel sketching and plein air painting… her sketchbooks tell the story of her wanderlust. Painting and sketching on location is an incredible way to connect with the culture of a place, its architecture, even the food and music! Sarah will be demonstrating in gouache, though you could also use acrylic. Similar techniques apply to acrylics as gouache because it is opaque, so you are welcome to work in either medium. We will work in sketchbooks mostly. But if you prefer larger paper, that’s fine too. Whether you love watercolor, gouache or ink, the principle of travel sketching remains the same: joyful creation!
