"Tonalism"
March 16, 2025

Tonalism is a uniquely American art form focused on the feeling, mood or emotion of the scene rather than producing a realistic representation of the subject. Often painting scenes of very early morning, very late in the evening, or foggy, rainy days, the tonalists used subtle colors that were restful and harmonious to the eye and employed soft and lost edges to create atmospheric perspective and a poetic feeling. We will review the characteristics of tonalism, and example works by famous painters. Following a demonstration, students will work on their own paintings with one-on-one consultation from the instructor. The instructor will demonstrate using soft pastels, but students are welcome to use the medium of their choice.

Discussion and demos will provide students with knowledge that can be used to improve their choice of subject and application of composition principles. Accuracy in shape-making and displaying depth through perspective and value will be stressed. Color mixing, brush and palette knife application of the medium, and edge treatments will be demonstrated by the instructor. Expecting to paint a masterpiece in class should not be a student objective. Learning the techniques and principles that will lead to prize-winning paintings, being awarded commissions, and obtaining gallery representation should be the take-away from class.

"Atmospheric Landscape in Watercolor"
March 8-13, 2026

This is one of the most favorite genres for watercolor artists. In this course we will analyze the three basic principles of landscape construction — three rules without which it is simply impossible to create a convincing and expressive watercolor. You will learn how to create atmospheric landscapes by manipulating tonal values, color and edge. Michael will show how to paint luminous landscapes and how to add emotions to your artwork. You will understand how to draw the right sketch and capture a picture in a dynamic and fresh style. You can expect plenty of individual attention and helpful demonstrations throughout the workshop.
