"Fun With Fibers: Weaving & More (Ages: 8-10)"

The classic craft of weaving encourages creative thinking and problem solving. It strengthens fine motor skills and is an early introduction to more advanced fiber arts skills like sewing, knitting and crocheting. We will explore the cultural connections of weaving, a craft form that combines artistic expression with math. Students will work with a variety of natural and synthetic fibers on traditional cardboard looms with plastic needles. All materials are included and supplied by Wayne Art Center. This is a 9-week, 1.5 hour, after-school class on Mondays.

"Beginner Pine Needle Basket Making"

Join local pine needle basket maker Karen McCarthy for this exciting half-day workshop designed for beginners! Students will make their very own small pine needle basket! This is a beginners class where participants will be given a kit which includes the base of a basket that has been started around a black walnut slice and then learn the basics of coiling, including the "simple basic stitch," how to change thread, and how to shape and finish the basket. "Makers' Retreats: An Embroidered Journey with Sam Hunter"

Sam Hunter leads this bespoke tour, designed to allow you to enjoy the beauty of place, the harmony of a small group, and to discover the little-known treasures of South West France including the Pyrenees Atlantiques and the Béarn. The week includes tuition, creative instruction and collaboration with Sam as she helps you design and stitch the cover of a journal, taking inspiration from the week of activities. Students can choose to learn a variety of techniques from the basics (starting a basket, changing thread, shaping sides, finishing a basket) to more advanced techniques (adding beads or other findings, doing a variety of stitches, or sculptural work). Students who are familiar with pine needle basket making are encouraged to bring work in progress and beads or findings they would like to incorporate into a basket. "Ink, Print, Repeat"

Explore textile pattern design using DIY acrylic inks and textile paints that will leave your fabric with a soft hand and give you exactly the colors you want. Explore a multitude of ways to create richly textured “base” fabrics by applying acrylics inks with different types of brush-strokes, sponges, altering ink and water ratios, adding salt, mono-printing, and scrunching, as well as pleating, stitching, clamping and pole wrapping fabric with a variety of shibori techniques. Learn how to successfully print with foam, rubber and wood stamps. Master screen printing with thermofax screens, then apply pattern design principles using various types of repeats to print on your textured “base” fabrics. It’ll be a blast of inspiration, innovation, information and fun.

"Indigo Shibori Retreat"

Join textile artist Davana Robedee in South West France for a week of experimentation with shibori techniques to create patterns on cloth. For thousands of years and all across the world, people have been fascinated by the magic of indigo dye. In this five-day retreat, students will learn how to create graduations of blue from light to dark, and do a deep dive into shibori exploration. We will start with folded and clamped resist using Itajime shibori and then learn several stitch resist shibori techniques. Davana will introduce techniques with step-by-step demonstrations, but will also discuss methods of creating depth, perspective, and imagery to develop one of a kind artworks. Each student will leave with beautifully dyed fabrics, scarves, or wearables.

"Woven Paper Vessels"

Join basket weaving artist and instructor Annetta Kraayeveld in South West France for a week of playful experimentation with coloured paper, learning how to weave in an inventive way. This creative retreat incorporates traditional basketry techniques with a colourful non-traditional material – weaving small baskets and vessels with paper. Students of all skill levels are welcome, though some basket weaving experience is encouraged. We will start by painting paper and weaving 2 or 3 small sample baskets (with materials prepared by the instructor). The sample baskets allow students time to practice. When the painted paper has cured, students will weave additional vessels; either designing their own pieces or weaving designs included in the student booklet.

"Translate your Drawings into Stitch"

Join textile artist Lora Avedian for a week of playful experimentation with textiles and hand embroidery, learning how to draw botanical motives with stitch. We will begin by creating experimental hand embroidery samples with the aim of developing nature-inspired hand embroidery techniques to make a textile artwork or embellish a pre-made item of our own. Looking at a variety of classic hand embroidery and embellishment techniques, you will learn how to play with scale and materials to create different qualities of line, 3D relief and texture, and how to combine this with three-dimensional fabric flowers. This will be an intensive and experimental week where you can learn Lora’s trade tips and tricks to create an original and dynamic mixed-media textile design of your own.
