"The Portrait in Charcoal"

Charcoal is one of the most common yet versatile drawing mediums, used to create both delicate and dramatic effects – perfect for portraiture. Work from photo sources, family/friends, or yourself as self-portrait subject to learn fine art principles and methodology to gain a comprehensive understanding of the head structure, proportions, and features toward achieving both a likeness and aesthetic effect. "Bookbinding and Book Arts"
Thursdays, July 10 - August 14, 2025
 

Bookbinding requires simple tools, is easily portable, and does not require a shop or studio, making it ideal for any artist working from home or in a personal studio space. This six-week course will explore how to make beautiful and durable bound artist books through a variety of techniques. No matter what your skill level, this live Zoom course will introduce students to basic and intermediate book structures which include pamphlet, expandable album, and single-, double-, and triple-section sewn books as well as codex structures. Discussion of the elements of artist books and detailed weekly instruction will enable participants to make their own artist books outside of class time and beyond the course.

"Alla Prima Landscape Painting"

"Observational Painting Toward Expression and Abstraction"
Sundays, July 13 - August 17, 2025
 

Explore the creative and expressive possibilities that can enhance your traditional and observational artwork. Each week the class will begin with a traditional subject: still lifes, landscapes, portraits, interiors, figures and master works with a goal of exploring and bringing greater expression and creativity to the subject. Content will include Q&A about materials and processes, the visual history of the creative diversity and variety of the subject in art history, color, style and compositional possibilities, and video demos by the instructor. A weekly project will be assigned with critiques by the instructor. Each class will be recorded for review and sent to students weekly. Students will gain an enriched toolbox of creative ideas, and possibilities for the artistic process.

"Spontaneous Abstraction Workshop"
August 2-3, 2025
 

Many artists can feel frustrated in front of a blank canvas, unsure of how to start and what to paint. Paint with confidence by learning techniques to tap into your intuitive process and find inspiration more easily! Experienced instruction and advice will push students to take chances and explore unexpected directions and accidental marks to achieve artistic discoveries. Students will use line, color and space, and editing possibilities to create busy/calm areas and focal points in their paintings as they work from personal imagery, expression, and imagination. Instruction will take the form of PowerPoint presentation/examples, formal direction from modern and contemporary artists, and one-on-on critiques in Zoom sessions that are geared toward open painting time in a classroom-like setting. Will be available to participants of any level! Classes offer individual instruction and assignments. In this class, we will learn how to tell your story, convey atmosphere, and feel, and understand colors, lines, focal-point, framing, and depth. "Online Figure Drawing via Zoom"

An international group meets online via Zoom every Wednesday (check your time zone). Short and long poses, from 5-10 minutes and 20-30 minutes. Each week I invite a new model to pose. There is always some music in the background that I'm sharing too. 2 hours session. No instruction. At the end of the session, we show each other the work. Friendly atmosphere, everyone is welcome!

"Painting Music Online"
Every Thursday
 

“Painting Music” is an intuitive painting and drawing, open session for everyone. No painting or drawing skills are needed. Move your paint as the music tells you... on a canvas or in your sketchbook. I create a one-hour playlist of the different subjects each week. You may paint one painting or 10 or as much as you want. No rules. You may interpret the music as figurative or abstract, anything goes! The camera of your device will be pointed to the working area, so we can also see the progress, and be inspired. After the session, we look at each other's artwork and talk about the process.
