Knowing which colors to mix together in order to get shadows can be a challenge. So many variables: time of day, color of object casting the shadow, color of surface the shadow falls upon, what is near the object…. etc., etc. This class will focus on the color wheel with a step-by-step approach to the mysteries of how shadows work and how to use complementary colors, analogous colors and neutrals to get harmonious, convincing shadows. We will paint from studio still life where we will be able to see what colors are in play to make the shadows. Come prepared to paint in your medium of choice. This class is perfect for beginners, or students wanting a brush-up or refresher of color theory!

Karen will lead students through her process of painting the pastel portrait. She will begin with teaching strategies to accurately draw the head, place the features and indicate the major light and shadow shapes. Karen will then demonstrate how to identify and lay in "average colors" of the shadow and light regions. She will show how she adjusts her general color notes by mixing and layering to "turn the color dials" on hue, value, temperature and chroma to achieve the desired relationships. During the final phase of the portrait, she will introduce techniques such as scumbling, glazing and hatching as she carefully makes corrections, refines edges and creates subtle nuances to bring the portrait to a polished finish.

Students in this workshop will be familiarized with the fundamental principles of drawing, enhancing their ability to see the basic shapes, forms, and values that make up the landscape. Participants will learn to “read” a photograph to accurately discern its weaknesses and to discover its hidden artistic gems. By integrating nature’s inherent proportions into the artistic process, students will receive the rudimentary essentials of composing a masterful landscape drawing. With only a few basic tools used by master artists for centuries, each student will be instructed to properly design, construct, draw, and render a realistic, even a photographic, image of their chosen landscape on paper.

A good painting has a lot of elements that contribute to its success. Color, value, technique and having a clear focus. All of these principles are explored by Aline, emphasizing looking at shapes in an abstract way in order to create illustrative paintings. Working from their own photo references, students will transform these into oil or pastel paintings using the principles of color, value and design. Along with a painting demonstration each day, Aline will talk about understanding color in terms of temperature, intensity and value while translating those ideas using pastel and oil technique. She will also emphasize the concept of creating shapes and carving back on them in order to achieve a painterly finish.
