"Painting Over the Line"

Take your work to the next level under the mentoring guidance of artist/critic Kassem Amoudi. In this live focused open studio environment, all levels of students will discover how to enhance their own visual language and interests exploring new ways of painting. Expert instruction and advice from the instructor will push students to explore new possibilities and work more intuitively, allowing unplanned marks and passages to become artistic breakthroughs. Examples from contemporary and modern art will be examined to promote a broader understanding of the abstract qualities of space, line and color. Advance beyond confined lines and hard edges to a more liberated way of painting. It does not matter What you paint. It is the How you paint it.

"Expressive Loose Watercolors - Flowers to Figures"
April 21-25, 2025
 

Fresh flowers for all will greet you as you enter the workshop! We will learn about the wonderful colors you can make with just a limited palette and cover interpreting flowers, faces and figures in a loose, expressive and fluid manner. You will be surrounded by beauty all around - at the Connecticut River Valley Inn. The Head and Figure portion of the workshop will require working from photos - I can provide many - but feel free to bring your own also. "Elevate Your Pottery (prior wheel experience)"

Want to make a couple of really cool pots this session? In this workshop style class, we will be exploring multi-piece pots that will be a combination of wheel thrown sections, hand-built sections and a variety of surface design techniques to complete larger pots. We will be focusing on, designing our pots, building each section, adding coils, slabs, carving and finishing with stains and glazes. This class is designed to elevate your pottery into eye catching works of art. Prior wheel throwing experience is required for this class. Class tuition includes your first bag of stoneware clay as well as glazes and firing fees for coursework completed in class.

"Handbuilding and Pit Firing"

This hand building course is appropriate for both beginners and advanced students. Demos on the three major hand building techniques coils, slabs and pinching will prepare students to discover and develop their own unique approach to working with clay, embracing and mastering a particular method or combination of techniques unique to each student. There will also be two pit firings, offering an alternative means of finishing the work. Tuition includes the first bag of stoneware, glazing and firing of coursework completed.

"Pottery Slab to Fab on Mondays"

The possibilities when working with slabs of clay are endless! Turn a flat piece of clay into platters, bowls, vases, mugs, garden planters, tiles, mirrors, and more. Students will master handbuilding techniques and create one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces in this fun and lively class. This class is a good fit for intermediate through advanced handbuilders. Follow demos and/or work on self-directed projects. Join us and experience how enjoyable and rewarding hand-building can be! "Stone Sculpture"

This class introduces students to the process of carving stone with hand tools. Beginners start with alabaster or soapstone, both fairly soft stones that can be easily carved. The instructor will provide tools for beginners to use during the class and assist throughout the process. More advanced students are always welcome to take the class. This class provides a regular scheduled opportunity to work, get feedback from other artists and a chance to both learn and share the knowledge students have acquired. Students will need to bring their own alabaster stone, which can be ordered from "The Complete Sculptor" online.

"Paper Clay"

"Art from the Heart: Abstract Painting"

"Jewelry- Lost Wax Casting and Beyond"

Casting molten metal is one of the oldest metal techniques dating back thousands of years. Students will learn how to work both hard and soft wax. These wax objects will be cast in sterling silver incorporating the lost wax casting technique. This class will cover calculating wax weights, spruing of waxes, safety issues and finishing. Students do not need prior metal experience but those that have taken a jewelry class will be able to use those skills in the finishing part of this technique. Cuttlefish casting will be offered. "Enamel Jewelry: Glass on Metal"

In this demonstration focused, multi-week class, students will learn the foundations of enameling on metal to create lightweight, wearable jewelry. Utilizing traditional metal fabrication and cold connections, students will learn silver soldering, earwire fitting, filing, sanding, and sawing, and light forming. They will then take their prepared metal and apply multiple layers of vitreous glass enamel, which will add color and even potential imagery to their new wearable pieces. Finally, students will learn about finishing and care to make their pieces sustain everyday wear and comfort.

"Ceramic Open Studio"

Wayne Art Center is pleased to offer an option for currently enrolled student members who wish to have more time in the studio to create and finish their work, and to practice their hand building and wheel throwing skills. Students will work independently, with a monitor available to sell clay and tools. Students must be currently enrolled in a Wayne Art Center Adult Spring 2025 ceramics class and must be members of Wayne Art Center to qualify for this open studio rate. "Teen Studio: Photography (Age: 11+)"

Starting with the fundamentals of photography, students learn about camera settings and composition from award-winning photographer Laura Ducceschi. Demonstrations and slideshows illustrate the concepts, then students put theory into practice creating photographs outside. They receive regular feedback during class critiques. Bring your own single lens reflex (DSLR) or mirrorless camera for this class. A compact camera is acceptable but will not have all the functionality. "Pine Needle Basket Making (All Levels)"
April 24, 2025
 

Join local pine needle basket maker Karen McCarthy for this exciting half-day workshop. The focus will be individualized, so students of all levels are welcome. Students can choose to learn a variety of techniques from the basics (starting a basket, changing thread, shaping sides, finishing a basket) to more advanced techniques (adding beads or other findings, doing a variety of stitches, or sculptural work). Students who are familiar with pine needle basket making are encouraged to bring work in progress and beads or findings they would like to incorporate into a basket. Whether you are a beginner or looking to round out your college portfolio, this student-centered class will help build essential drawing and painting skills using a variety of mediums, including pencil, charcoal, chalk pastel, watercolor, and acrylic paints. Students will explore different approaches to art, working from life by arranging unique still-life setups and observing nature in the garden. Fresh flowers for each student at beautiful Dillman's Resort will be provided to inspire all for this energetic and enlightening workshop, in which we will explore watercolor in a spontaneous and intuitive way. Learning how to interpret Flowers - then the Head and Figure will be featured as Janet provides pathways to learning for all levels. The studio will be available 24/7 for students. Janet will also provide photos and drawings of her demonstrations of the head - students are welcome to paint what she paints or paint from their own photos. "Capturing Radiant Light in Your Paintings in Oil or Acrylic"

Master your ability to capture radiance in your paintings and join South Carolina artist Michael Story for this three-day landscape painting workshop. Michael will explain and demonstrate the fundamentals of building radiant color by applying complementary and analogous color combinations. Students begin their paintings with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image. Starting with rich shadow colors, you’ll begin blocking in our painting, then progressing dark to light to completion. "Finding Light and Inspiration in Your Photo References in Pastel"

"2 workshops together: Watercolor Batik and Acrylic"
March 20-21, 2026
 

Day 1: Kathie will lead you step-by-step through layering watercolor and wax, teaching all the important skills you need to become an expert. You’ll be excited when you see what this technique can do! You get a look you cannot achieve any other way. No watercolor skills are necessary. We get a bit messy, but we have fun doing it! Day 2: Enjoy experimenting with different texture mediums to create a wonderful ground for our painting. We’ll pour and carve and stamp and scrape. Then we develop the subject with beautiful transparent glazes and thicker applications, too. With acrylic there are really no mistakes, just a lot of fun as you discover that this is indeed the most forgiving, adaptable medium.
