Explore drawing and painting beyond paper and canvas! Learn to create artworks on the computer using Adobe Photoshop and digital pen tablets. Apply drawing and painting concepts such as line quality, color, value, and mark-making techniques as you use your stylus like a brush or pencil with the computer screen or tablet as your digital canvas. Expand your traditional studio practice with digital portrait painting/drawing techniques. Students interested in game design may focus on extending fine art principles into the virtual realm in the development of character or creature design, environment design, or concept art. Students will utilize programs and equipment at PAFA – an excellent way to learn to work with digital art-making products without, or prior to, purchasing.

Join us for photography classes outside in natural settings. The first five classes will meet at different local sites with seasonal appeal. As we explore the environs, we will talk about strategies and options for focus, depth of field and exposure. Discussions will also include composition, point of view and perspective to get the best possible result. Bring your own DSLR or mirrorless camera. Compact cameras are acceptable. Tripod optional. Some walking over uneven terrain may be required. The sixth and final meeting will be in the classroom for image sharing, suggestions and learning from each other’s experiences. Granada in the south of Spain is one of the most exciting, different, and welcoming cities I know. So much is going on there in the culture historically and present. We will work mostly in our sketchbooks and Journals during our week in Granada. Moving around with only a backpack and light stools will be easier. We’ll be sketching alleys and mountains, the old casbah, and the famous Alhambra from inside and its surroundings—Flamenco performances in local bars, also gardens, and urban views. We will stay in beautiful accommodation in the heart of the old city, and from there we will have access to our sketching adventure.

Photoshop is a robust program with complicated features for editing and improving photographs. Topics covered in this class include: 1) a focus on isolating and emphasizing the subject, 2) blurring backgrounds and adding foreground blur, 3) applying noise reduction and sharpening while maintaining resolution and clarity, 4) using layer styles and gradient mapping to add textures, depth and drama to your images.
