This workshop will focus on helping students transform their interest in drawing and painting into the art of Monotype and Monoprint. Monoprinting is considered the most painterly of all printmaking techniques. Techniques covered will include, but not be limited to, dark and light field monotypes (with examples from Degas’s prints), trace monotypes (with examples from Gauguin and Paul Klee), chine colle, glazing, the printing of actual objects and frottage. How these prints can be further developed into collage and mixed media pieces will also be explored. Appropriate for beginners through advanced level. Lithography is a versatile printmaking process that allows for a complete range of drawing effects: contour line, hatching/cross-hatching, painterly wash applications, expressive mark-making, and reductive techniques. Learn all aspects of the lithographic process through step-by-step demonstrations and hands-on practice: preparing a traditional stone or lightweight aluminum plate; creating your own drawing from observation, imagination or photographic transfer using a range of drawing materials; selecting paper; printing in black-and-white and color; and editioning your prints. Note: Tuition includes a $20 lab fee.

Discover how to make linocuts in colour, using a variety of techniques. Starting with the basics of carving and printing, you will learn how to create a wide range of marks, patterns and textures to give your prints a unique look. Once you have mastered the basics, you will discover how to mix colours, control ink transparency and print in layers. You will also discover how to make beautiful colour blends to add depth and drama. Following on from the introductory sessions, you will work on your own project, with guidance from Nick, so you can explore linocut in the way you want. Nick will be on hand to give you advice and help you get the best results possible.

Relief block printing is a fascinating method to make multiple originals of your graphic image by carving the forms and patterns into a block of linoleum or soft latex. Wonderful variations of color are achieved as we use ink our blocks in numerous colors and handprint on papers—both solid and transparent. Imagine the possibilities! In addition to the registration cost, students should bring $20 cash to pay the instructor for materials, all of which she will supply for you.

Explore textile pattern design using DIY acrylic inks and textile paints that will leave your fabric with a soft hand and give you exactly the colors you want. Explore a multitude of ways to create richly textured “base” fabrics by applying acrylics inks with different types of brush-strokes, sponges, altering ink and water ratios, adding salt, mono-printing, and scrunching, as well as pleating, stitching, clamping and pole wrapping fabric with a variety of shibori techniques. Learn how to successfully print with foam, rubber and wood stamps. Master screen printing with thermofax screens, then apply pattern design principles using various types of repeats to print on your textured “base” fabrics. It’ll be a blast of inspiration, innovation, information and fun.

Throughout the week you will be introduced to the art of lino cut printmaking with Emily Robertson. Drawing inspiration from the luxuriant, natural environment of Clos Mirabel and its surrounds, Emily will guide you in the creation of your own lino cut prints. She will demonstrate the full lino printmaking process; drawing designs, carving & printing by hand. This course is suitable for any level of experience. You will be taught techniques that can easily be used for work you can create back home, as well as ways to improve the quality and even consistency of your prints.
