In this 1-Day workshop, Karen will lead students through her process of drawing the portrait from the initial measurements to the final stages of refining. Using a photo reference, she will begin with teaching strategies to accurately draw the head, place the features and indicate the major light and shadow shapes. Karen will demonstrate how to define the shadow and light regions which give the illusion of form. Basic elements of design will be discussed, and a variety of drawing techniques will be introduced. The class will focus on drawing from our environment using the beautiful Hilton Head Lowcountry as inspiration. Participants will create studies based on botanicals and objects from the beach. Techniques such as negative space and expressive line work will be discussed. This class will expand upon drawing basics, including structure and value. Students will be encouraged to look at their environment in a new and imaginative way, and are encouraged to bring their own favorite objects from nature to draw.

This workshop will show you how to effectively doodle, noodle & zentangle! Students finish the day with a piece of abstract art. This workshop came about from Joan's own personal experience as a stalled artist. She was forced to put off working on her art for years due to responsibilities in the "real" world. However, once awarded the chance to start working on her art again, she was terrified and stuck. Doodling opened the door and Joan came pouring out. Students should bring $20 for materials.

Students in this workshop will be familiarized with the fundamental principles of drawing, enhancing their ability to see the basic shapes, forms, and values that make up the landscape. Participants will learn to “read” a photograph to accurately discern its weaknesses and to discover its hidden artistic gems. By integrating nature’s inherent proportions into the artistic process, students will receive the rudimentary essentials of composing a masterful landscape drawing. With only a few basic tools used by master artists for centuries, each student will be instructed to properly design, construct, draw, and render a realistic, even a photographic, image of their chosen landscape on paper.
