"Watercolor Fundamentals"

Watercolor is a wonderful painting medium due to its vibrant and translucent nature, quick drying time, and easy set-up and clean-up. Learn the tools and techniques of the medium while painting directly from engaging still life arrangements. Direct and layered painting methods, color, brushes, and the variety of papers available will all be covered. Receive helpful feedback and critique along the way. Great watercolor painters of the past and present will be discussed including John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Charles Burchfield and Andrew Wyeth. All levels welcome, from beginner to those looking to brush up their skills. Basic materials will be supplied.

"Plein Air Painting in the Park"
Fridays, May 31 - June 14, 2024
 

Paint on location in Philadelphia's beautiful and historic Fairmount Park at select locations including Laurel Hill Cemetery featuring terraced grounds, sculpture, and amazing views of the Schuylkill River, the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center and historic park mansions! The instructor will demonstrate techniques, reference art historical examples, and encourage personal expression. Instruction will be geared to watercolor, but experienced oil/acrylic painters are welcome. Free parking and restrooms will be available.

"Plein Air Painting in Gouache"
Saturdays, June 1-29, 2024
 

Gouache (opaque watercolor paint) is the perfect medium for landscape painting in the open air! Painters of all levels will fall in love with it as a portable, fast-drying, and easy-to-clean-up alternative to oils. Explore gouache’s subtle but vibrant color and versatile application methods as you portray the beauty of Philadelphia’s parks in your own personal style. Learn techniques for choosing a composition, mixing color, and working efficiently outdoors as you complete a series of rapid sketches and at least one sustained painting. Open to all levels. Painting locations featuring shade, restrooms, and other amenities may include Wissahickon Park in Mt. Airy, Washington Square Park near Independence Hall, and Bartram's Garden in Southwest Philadelphia. Students are responsible for their own transportation.

"Painting & Poetry Workshop"

"Plein Air Demonstration: Letting the Paint Do The Work"

Demonstration on the ways watercolor can make forms, mix colors and describe atmospheric effects by exploiting its unique “wetness “or “dryness”. I strive to create just enough representation to provide a point of view and an orientation in space. Afterwards, I’m intrigued by the descriptive nature of paint to provide a believable world in the viewer’s mind.

"Light & Shadow"

"Master Copy Class"

For both the novice and experienced artist, copying the work of the old masters is a time-honored tradition. This methodology has been used by the likes of Da Vinci, Degas, and Sargent. In this class, students will have the opportunity to render drawings and paintings from masterworks of their choosing. Materials will depend on the type of work being pursued, which will be discussed on the first day. Students should look forward to increased knowledge of art history, color theory, composition, and perspective.
