The world of stone carving is at your fingertips! Have fun learning to carve stone using traditional hand and power tools. Students choose a raw piece of soapstone or alabaster on their first day of class. Following step-by-step instructions about basic stone carving techniques, students turn a block of stone into a 3-Dimensional sculpture, using hammers, chisels and other tools. Camaraderie working with others help students watch and adapt new ideas and techniques, enhancing their knowledge, experience, and understanding of sculpting stone. Acrylic pouring is a great way to create interesting texture, patterns, and marbleized effects. I will take you through the process of mixing acrylic paints to pour and the appropriate consistency for different types of pour painting. In this class we will use frisket paper to keep our whale intact as we pour the sky, clouds and ocean. We will use swipe technique as well as some traditional painting techniques for fine details of our whale. We will also splatter for splashing ocean as well. Students will hear a brief history of mosaics and see examples of ancient and contemporary mosaics. The instructor will provide guidance on planning an 8 x 8 inch mosaic and instruction on the use of mosaic tools. The students will practice using tools to cut several different kinds of materials and practice placement of the mosaic pieces. All materials will be provided to create a mosaic piece using a variety of materials. The instructor will demonstrate grouting, so the students may do their own grouting at home.

Cell phones have become the commonly used camera, often more than cameras themselves! In this class, we will discuss some of the advantages and challenges of using these devices for photography. Additionally, we will look at composition and use of light to capture professional pictures, and how to share photos and move them between your iPhone, iPad, and laptop. We will demonstrate and practice, cropping and improving your photos, using the built-in apps on your devices. No experience is necessary. Each parent-child team will receive their own cookie cottage, pre-assembled and ready to decorate! All supplies included. Kids can choose from hand building projects: working wet soft clay to make things with clay slabs like dishes and sculptures. Or experience throwing on the wheel: making cylinders shaped like cups, bowls, vases and flower pots. Please wear clothes than can get dirty. Leave jewelry at home if possible, keep hands and wrists free. Tie back long hair. Kids are expected to clean up their own mess as part of the pottery process. Keep your best 2 pieces at the end of class, and choose a color that the teacher will later glaze the work in, or come back to several classes and learn the glaze process. Pottery takes 2-4 weeks to finish.
