The Magic of Crystalline Glazes Tuscany Style
September 11-18, 2010 — Come join us in the hills of beautiful Tuscany at the ceramic school "La Meridiana". Explore handbuilt or wheel-thrown ceramic forms using a porcelain clay body while learning to create a surface receptive to Crystal Glazes. Crystalline glazes have a magical quality. The slightest movement causes light to dance across the surface, revealing layered depths of color and texture in a constantly changing rhythm. The challenge and fascination of this glazing technique is to recreate the process of crystalization that in nature can take thousands of years. Our instructor will also invite us to create unique ceramic jewelry applying this special glaze technique. Students will share housing in the beautiful setting of a traditional Italian villa "Il Testimonio". Visit website

October 9-11, 2010 (9 am - 4 pm) — Be bright and bold while painting the exceptional autumn color of the golden vineyards, tapestry-patterned mountains, rustic farms and sunlit barns. You will learn to see the landscape differently and practice recreating that vision into painted shapes and colors on canvas. You will practice painting with a vivified palette and spontaneous brusque brushwork. There will be demonstrations supplemented with tutorial handouts and lots of individual instruction at the easel. This workshop provides you the opportunity to take your paintings to a new level while revealing your painting voice. One art critic recently reviewed Elsey's paintings as "mighty and memorable" while "flirting with burly Van Gogh effects." The Joy of Travel Journaling
October 11 - November 15, 2010 (Mondays, 9am-12pm) — Ever wonder why we rarely look at our travel photos? Perhaps it's because taking a photo requires so little investment of one's attention. Not so with even a brief sketch and some notes in your journal. While I still take loads of pictures, it's invariably my journals that, even 32 years later, vividly evoke wonderful places and events of our travels! Sketching on location slows your pace, as you observe a scene for minutes, not just seconds. Regardless of skill level, you'll be amazed at how quickly your drawing improves... within hours! Prepare to visit (and sketch) at several of the North Valley's most interesting locales, and to gain a new perspective on sketching, journaling, travel, and even watercolor itself. Beginners are especially welcome. Visit website
