Tonalism is a uniquely American art form focused on the feeling, mood or emotion of the scene rather than producing a realistic representation of the subject. Often painting scenes of very early morning, very late in the evening, or foggy, rainy days, the tonalists used subtle colors that were restful and harmonious to the eye and employed soft and lost edges to create atmospheric perspective and a poetic feeling. We will review the characteristics of tonalism, and example works by famous painters. The figure has been at the center of Scott Noel's art for forty years. This workshop will explore two complementary experiences with the life model. On the first day, the morning session will develop an interpretation of the body emphasizing gesture, mass, and volume. In the afternoon we will make an extended drawing in grisaille using black and white acrylic or gray pastels to evolve the body's forms into a shape-map that becomes continuous with the space surrounding the model. During this painting workshop I will lead you through the process of capturing the overall essence and mood that natural light plays in an interior space or still life. I will cover techniques to render the changing of natural light in conjunction with artificial light. This tree painting workshop dives into tree structure and how to capture a tree's personality. We will focus on building the tree's gesture, capturing its shape and movement, creating depth with its trunk, and understanding how its foliage integrates into the larger form. Our goal is to learn how to generalize the tree's structure and capture its essence without getting bogged down in minute details. The class will include lots of one-on-one instruction and a lecture exploring how both historical and contemporary painters approach tree construction. While artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, John Marin, Aurthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Charles Demuth were actively adapting modernism to an American sensibility, another group of painters turned their back on the city and set their sights on rural America. Portraying a landscape and lifestyle that was rapidly retreating, or never actually existed, artists like Thomas Hart Benton, John Curry, and Grant Wood created a new rural mythology. Historically, these groups have been viewed as in opposition. This talk will look at the tension between two seemingly divergent visions of America and consider how they reflect broader inclinations in the U.S. in the early 20th century.

Life Drawing, also known as Figure Drawing, is the practice of drawing in order to study the human figure. If you look at historic artwork, you'll find many nude drawings and paintings. In painting, composition is much more than a system of rules or the placement of objects. Composition is the entire relationship of parts to whole, from the individual brushstroke to the largest shape. Brushstrokes themselves, far from being just surface texture, are carriers of direction and intent: every mark has a character and is part of the composition, moving the eye through the canvas, creating structure and meaning in painting. This oil painting workshop will focus on the gesture of brushwork and its role in making strong compositions. Brushstrokes can be wild and thrilling, or calming and caressing. While providing useful visual information, photos often mislead - distorting subjects and flattening the picture plane. Tonalism is a uniquely American art form focused on the feeling, mood or emotion of the scene rather than producing a realistic representation of the subject. Often painting scenes of very early morning, very late in the evening, or foggy, rainy days, the tonalists used subtle colors that were restful and harmonious to the eye and employed soft and lost edges to create atmospheric perspective and a poetic feeling. Join international artist and art educator Wendy Artin at Atelier Clos Mirabel in South West France for a week-long painting workshop. Create your own original artwork and discover a wonderful area of France. To create a believable vision of magic one needs to learn the visual tricks of a magician. Lauren combines 19th century style fairy paintings with naturalistic/botanical watercolors in her own illustrated children’s books such as in her retelling of Thumbelina and her book Fairy Wings. Students will learn the nuts and bolts of book illustration beginning with the layout of a picture book, utilizing compositional tools including the golden ratio, color, value, atmospheric perspective and emotional compositions. We will explore creating believable characters and putting them into naturalistic scenes by understanding how to combine varied references and understanding simplified methods of perspective, anatomical proportions, and consistent light and shadow.

This workshop will focus on working in abstraction while considering some basic fundamentals exploring composition, colour and expressive brushwork. This event is held at my Niagara-on-the-Lake studio. The studio is bright and spacious, and registration is limited to 10 people. Outdoor painting may be an option, weather permitting.
