"Creating the Illusion of Depth: Atmospheric Perspective"
June 24, 2021

Online Zoom Demo. The illusion of depth in a painting—whether non-objective or realistic—can be very dynamic and pleasing. This appearance is called atmospheric perspective and is used to make contours or objects appear 3-dimensional and to recede into the distance. This effect is obtained by changing values (lightness and darkness) of the color and by reducing the intensity of the color. In a 2-part demo, Alex will demonstrate how to achieve this illusion of depth in both an abstract, and a landscape painting. Alex will be using oils, but the methods and color mixings are the same for all painting media. Plan to paint in your medium of choice.

During the pandemic, you may have experienced anxiety and sadness. You are not alone. Learn to work through your feelings and the anxiety we are all carrying through art-making. Cultivating mindfulness, or wakefulness, allows you to be fully present and aware of your actions, without feeling distracted and overwhelmed by other thoughts or outside influences. Art-making is a natural way of practicing mindfulness, and is especially important in these challenging times. Mindful art-making has been shown not only to reduce stress and improve communication skills, but also benefits those suffering from memory loss, depression, or PTSD. "Optical Color in Painting (Online)"
Thursdays, July 8 - August 12, 2021

Enrich your painting practice through an understanding of optical color, the perception of color resulting from the combination of hues placed next each other, rather than physically mixed. Just as important as admixture (the blending of pigments), optical mixing through the application of adjacent color strokes allows the creation of a variety of luminous effects. Examine optical color through historical examples from 13th-century egg tempera painting to the light-filled work of the Impressionists and Pointillists. Demystify this exciting perceptual phenomenon and learn how to apply it to your own art by working within a structured plan from varied subject matter in acrylic or gouache paint. Instruction features lecture, and demonstration, and ample references.

"Mastering Skies & Reflections in Oil, Acrylic or Pastel"
August 26-29, 2021

Master your landscape painting and join South Carolina artist Michael Story for this four day workshop as we use the sky and water as a dramatic design element in our painting’s composition. You’’ll begin your painting with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image. Starting with shadow colors, you’ll begin blocking in your painting, then progressing dark to light to completion. Building final layers of color and avoiding muddy mixtures, you’ll achieve fresh, bright color while capturing depth, drama and mood to your work. He will demonstrate and provide photo reference to paint from if desired along with color exercises you may complete after the workshop. For more information, visit michaelstory.com.

"Three Letter Words"
August 27, 2021

In this class, we will transfer letterforms (or you can make your own) to small canvas, and add imagery that calls to us. We will use a dry brush technique, which is a silhouetting technique that involves painting the negatives instead of the positives. Dry brushing is a helpful illustration technique to know, and a good exercise in seeing shapes. This project can easily be done in one day. We suggest picking a set of letters that offers more than one word: such as now, won, or own. Let the instructor know the word you pick ahead of time so the letters can be ready for you, or jump in and design your own.

"Delicollage"
August 29, 2021

Deli paper — we’ve all tried it! But you’ve probably never done the things with it that we will do in this class. Students will learn to shave pastels, and to add metallic powders and thin Asian papers to their collages. High-flow acrylic paint will be used to add abstract writing as well as Pollock-like drips and splashes. We will create a huge pile of collage papers! We will then choose our favorites and build an abstract collage suitable for framing. You’ll learn a lot about acrylic paints and mediums in the process and go home with a lot of papers for future use!

"Beyond Description: Expressive Painting through Image Structure"
November 8-12, 2021

Your growth as an artist is my priority as we study great artists and unlock the universal secrets of image structure. At a primal level, it’s this abstract image structure that moves us-- the use of line, shape, space, value, color, and texture. This applies to any style or genre of painting because every good painting is good due to the underlying abstraction - the power of the purely visual. The plan is always to help you reach your potential, painting your way, with your voice and vision, but better than ever before. You can paint representational or abstract. Oils, watercolors, collage, and acrylics welcome. Come be encouraged and inspired in a fun, upbeat atmosphere.
