Art Workshops, Classes & Retreats

"Experimental Collage"
June 6-7, 2020

This action packed class will expand your concept of collage. You will begin with a process I call Scribble to Structure. This is a mixed media process on paper that will loosen up your creative muscles. You will be working with pencils, paints, pastels and paper. You will learn some unusual ways to move the paint. Color combinations and composition skills will be explored. This is one of my favorite ways to begin a creative journey. On day two you expand your vocabulary with new materials for collage including fabrics and transparent papers you will create. You will learn how to make your collages look like Encaustic if you wish, and how to get crackles to stay on papers too.

"The Art of the Sketchbook"
July 24, 2020

Let's face it - life gets busy and studio time can be hard to come by. The key to maintaining a healthy studio practice lies in the sketchbook. This class explores the sketchbook as a portable art studio, a place to 'play' like nobody's watching, and a way of recording your personal process. Together, we'll embark on a creative journey starting with non-traditional warm-up exercises and resulting in standalone abstract works in your personal sketchbook. We'll explore color mixing, palette building, creative prompts, doodling, paint application and collage. Learn to take risks and work out ideas before starting on a big canvas. Most importantly, you'll learn to love the process in addition to the end result.

Unleash your creativity by combining art media to create incredibly diverse and unique art. Try a variety of materials including acrylic paint, pastel, colored pencil and watercolor. Overcome any fear you may have of the "blank canvas" with "brushless" painting. Prepare substrates with paint and paper that will become a background layer for image transfer processes. Learn image transfer techniques to include photographs in your mixed media pieces. Learn how to think about what types of images work best with your art. Learn about gelli plate print-making and art journaling techniques to make individual pages that can stand alone or bind together in a book.

"Expressive Landscape Painting"
July 25, 2020

The foundation of this workshop lies in traditional landscape painting, however, the resultant paintings will be anything but traditional! This workshop is rooted in the formal qualities of landscape painting and uses these principles as means to abstract. The first half of the workshop will be spent exploring automatic drawing techniques, compositional studies, and non-traditional color palettes. The later half will be spent working on a larger, more involved painting. The sequential layout of this class will give students the tools and confidence to take chances and make informed decisions on the canvas.

"The Bigger Picture/Loosening Up"
July 26, 2020

Let's paint the bigger picture! Discover approaches to fill a big canvas. This workshop combines demos, in-class assignments and individual instruction to teach students the techniques to create an engaging composition with fresh, deliberate marks on a big canvas. Using observational painting as our launching point, we'll embark with energetic composition and image building exercises designed to tap into each participant's personal voice. The practice of working direct from life results in a heightened awareness and a lasting impression of the moment. We'll paint freer and bolder and let our personalities inspire what we see in our immediate surroundings. Through painting and observational exercises, we'll analyze what influences our choices and how to incorporate our personal voice in our work.

"The Landscape in Abstraction"
July 26, 2020

There's no feeling quite like throwing a big bold brush stroke right across your canvas! This workshop will explore highly abstract landscape painting with a focus on intuitive mark, color, layering and texture. Together, we will transform simple reference imagery into rich, energetic, abstract paintings. The first half of the workshop will be spent creating a small series of mini abstracts, the latter half will be spent working on a larger, more involved painting. We will use non-traditional tools for paint application, take risks, and visit the great question of all: "Is my painting finished?"
