"Experimental Collage"
June 6-7, 2020

This action packed class will expand your concept of collage. You will begin with a process I call Scribble to Structure. This is a mixed media process on paper that will loosen up your creative muscles. You will be working with pencils, paints, pastels and paper. You will learn some unusual ways to move the paint. Color combinations and composition skills will be explored. This is one of my favorite ways to begin a creative journey. On day two you expand your vocabulary with new materials for collage including fabrics and transparent papers you will create. You will learn how to make your collages look like Encaustic if you wish, and how to get crackles to stay on papers too.

"Dynamic Design in Collage with Books"
July 24-26, 2020

In this 3-day workshop, we seek to unravel the mysteries of great abstract composition using collage processes and the fascinating material of deconstructed old books. Collage is the ideal medium for exploring composition and I am loading our backpack with 3 powerful "technologies" to make your exploration fruitful. While there are a handful of principles of design, some are more important than others - we will start with the most powerful ones. These fundamental principles will strengthen your work and give you a foundation to build on.

"Quilt Experiments: In Search of Our Creative Edge"
July 24-26, 2020

Creativity is a constant cycle. You'll experiment with ways to build up layers of fabric using quilting, stitching, applique, rearranging, deconstructing, and collage. We'll start each day by making 12" square flat panels of thick quilting. These panels are the structures that are like your prepared canvases. They'll be used for our experiments. We'll cut parts out, reconfigure them, and start to add three-dimensional elements. Directed exercises will constantly transform the artwork & challenge you! You will discover unexpected combinations, learn new techniques, and begin something magnificent. Please note: You will be learning the techniques necessary for building a three-dimensional vessel, but you will not be building one in this class.

"The Art of the Sketchbook"
July 24, 2020

Let's face it - life gets busy and studio time can be hard to come by. The key to maintaining a healthy studio practice lies in the sketchbook. This class explores the sketchbook as a portable art studio, a place to 'play' like nobody's watching, and a way of recording your personal process. Together, we'll embark on a creative journey starting with non-traditional warm-up exercises and resulting in standalone abstract works in your personal sketchbook. We'll explore color mixing, palette building, creative prompts, doodling, paint application and collage. Learn to take risks and work out ideas before starting on a big canvas. Most importantly, you'll learn to love the process in addition to the end result.

"Small Floral Collage - Small Format 10x10"
July 26, 2020

A comprehensive one-day workshop that will take you through the collage process step-by-step. A great prerequisite to this class is the Gel Plate Monoprinting workshop, so that you can bring your own papers to class; however, I will provide a sampling of papers for sharing for those who do not make their own papers. Colors of provided papers will, of course, be limited. You may also bring colored, decorative papers from the art supply store, or papers you may have already painted or monoprinted. No magazines, scrapbook paper, or shiny paper please. At the end of this workshop, you will have the skills and confidence to create an impressionistic, painterly collage - your very own Paper Painting!
