Experience magical Sicily, enjoy breathtaking vistas, tiny villages, amazing Sicilian gastronomy and local wine. My interest in creating a Retreat for Tutors is to create a forum for instructors in watercolor to explore the Art of Teaching. My concerns in the way watercolor workshops are being conducted, seem to me to have vastly narrow limits in the general format in which they are conducted. Of course, to be sure I haven’t seen all the various methods used and the ones I have seen are quite well done but could there be more? I hope this idea appeals to you and you will join me in kicking off a wonderful retreat tradition for years to come.

Painting is learning to see. Often, we paint what we think we see because we all have preconceived notions of what something looks like. However, to really paint what you see, you must break down everything you are looking at into just abstract shapes. Don’t see a “house”, see a series of interlocking shapes. Aline is known for her vivid paintings and creative use of color. Working from their own photo references, students will transform these into pastel or oil paintings using the principles of color and design. Along with daily painting demonstrations, Aline will emphasize the understanding of color in terms of temperature, intensity, and value while translating those ideas using pastel or oil techniques.

Painting loosely doesn't just 'happen'; it comes from gaining a comfortable level with your skills and materials. However, some techniques can speed up this process. This workshop will focus on using value studies from the outset to identify the large shapes in a scene. We will move on toward color paintings with a lot of individual help and complete color painting lessons together. Demonstration paintings will be done by Andy every day to reinforce the day’s lessons. To loosen up, it is imperative to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish with your painting and then execute it quickly. This class will give you the tools and confidence to do just that.

There’s a bookshelf in my studio that holds more than 30 travel sketchbooks. Every time I browse through them, memories of a specific place come flooding back — and not just the sights. Sounds, scents and flavours, snippets of conversations with a farmer, the taste of my morning coffee and brioche — it’s all still there, fresh in my mind, the moment I crack open a sketchbook.
That’s what I love best about travel sketching. How the act of putting pencil and paint to paper enriches the total experience, and preserves it forever.

John will share his creative process of choosing a reference, sketching the scene, demonstrates various techniques including his techniques for masking and lifting, provide instruction on perspective, and how to create reflection and texture with watercolor.
