"Quilting: Designing From Nature"
July 30 - August 3, 2018

Quilts you design are a great complement to the wonderful range of traditional (and modern!) quilts that entice us. Our most memorable quilts are often those that speak to special times, places, things, and people in our lives. Using your photographs as the place to begin the design process offers a personalized and memorable look to your quilts. Based on the design methods developed by Ruth McDowell, this class takes you through the design process – from photo to pictorial quilt. This style of quilt emphasizes the use of patterned cotton fabrics in unique ways yet is grounded in traditional piecing methods. The result is a quilt design with a somewhat abstract quality that is uniquely your own.

"Niagara Falls- Finding your focus outdoors"
September 24-25, 2018

I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. A better solution is not to paint a specific subject, instead, look for 'light'. An ordinary object in the right light becomes extraordinary! When you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finish what you can do to make the painting more exciting. Learn to find a strong composition, value pattern, and you'll learn how to work with color temperature for atmospheric effects.

"Alla Prima Clothed Figure & Portrait Painting"
October 18-21, 2018

This workshop is about painting the clothed figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. Then students will paint from the model. For the portrait, we’ll talk about the overall shape of the head and placing the features. Working on a toned ground, we’ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we block in two simple values: light and dark tone. After that we begin adding mid-tones. By learning to simplify form, values and color, we begin to interpret and break down the figure into more understandable tones and shapes instead of becoming distracted by details. Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced. Visit davidshevlino.com.

"Suggesting Reality"
January 14-18, 2019

Through art, subjects become significant to us in unique ways, aesthetically and conceptually. This workshop will not only reinforce an understanding of composition and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. Students will participate in discussions regarding the subtleties, variations, lines, textures and colors that enliven our senses and captivate our interest; the way our eyes perceive things and how we make choices regarding their relative importance; the suggestion of the passage of time; the relative states of motion and stillness; how the artist may represent nature in order to reflect on his or her perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the important power of symbol and abstraction.

"Abstract Painting: Experimenting, Risk Taking and Growth"
February 4-8, 2019

All great paintings in every style and time period are built on the abstract structure underneath the image -the use of line, space, value, color, and texture. At a primal level, it is this abstract language that moves us. Abstract painting explores the power of the purely visual. Students will not be taught to paint like the instructor. Instead, students will be encouraged to explore, take risks, and become the best version of themselves as artists. Students will be encouraged and inspired in a fun, upbeat atmosphere and go home ready to create their best work yet.

I believe that you can work in many styles, and still have a unique and recognizable voice as an artist. In this workshop we will explore the issue of style and voice in the context of the body of work. You will choose your own focus and work deeply into it for the whole five days. Learn how deep focus allows you more freedom to explore, not less. Leave the workshop with a body of work in progress, and a broader appreciation of your own creative capacity.
