Abstract art is about expression. Life offers so many challenges and having a place to learn how to release all those feelings with smiles is "worth its weight in gold”. There are so many ways to free yourself when doing abstractions. Using colors you were afraid to use, making silly marks, and doing things with the innocence of a child. No wrongs or rights, but just having fun and letting go. If you want to learn how to express your inner thoughts and sharpen your skills at the same time, this is a great class for you. We will talk about composition, acrylic techniques, space, and rhythm while having a really good time doing it.

"Creating Dynamic Paintings from Photos"
April 20-21, 2024

Successfully producing expressive, painterly paintings from photographs requires a knowledge of both the advantages and potential pitfalls of photographic sources. While providing useful visual information, photos often mislead - distorting subjects and flattening the picture plane. In this workshop students will use photographs as a point of departure, a reference point from which information will selectively and intelligently be drawn. Developing an enhanced visual awareness of compositional design, the importance of shapes, color harmony and paint application is critically important. This workshop will help students learn to “see” as painters. They will be challenged to take chances, be bold, expressive and spontaneous. Group and individual critiques will be given. The workshop will be challenging, the environment supportive, fun and positive.

"A Conversation with The Landscape, a Pastel Workshop"
May 1-3, 2024

Really getting to know a landscape, instead of just identifying elements of it, makes us better, more sensitive landscape painters. Each landscape has a personality and something to say. It’s when we begin to really understand why a landscape draws us in and captures our imagination that we become better able to advance from simply copying the obvious aspects of the landscape to incorporating mood and atmosphere and those hard-to-define qualities that take a landscape painting from average to extraordinary. The studio portion of this workshop will focus on learning ways to create paintings that have their own voice, and the optional plein air day will focus on gathering thoughts and information, along with creating small paintings for future reference material.

"Painting in Provence: Travel Sketching in Watercolor"
June 15-22, 2024

There’s a bookshelf in my studio that holds more than 30 travel sketchbooks. Every time I browse through them, memories of a specific place come flooding back — and not just the sights. Sounds, scents and flavours, snippets of conversations with a farmer, the taste of my morning coffee and brioche — it’s all still there, fresh in my mind, the moment I crack open a sketchbook. That’s what I love best about travel sketching. How the act of putting pencil and paint to paper enriches the total experience, and preserves it forever. Come sketch with me in Provence, where we’ll capture this historic region’s beauty and character in our sketchbooks.

"Developing Personal Visual Archetypes"
July 8-9, 2024

Often, Southern folklife is represented visually as a whole in redundant cliches. The repainted tropes strip away all meaning, beauty and dignity, and unfortunately, result in a loss of interest and respect, with the real danger of having no societal contribution. Nonney shares new visual archetypes that are based on specifics – regional folklife, folklore and indigenous flora and fauna, but with an added personal twist. These twists reclaim individuality, and use modernism coupled with tradition to create a new depiction of Southern Art. Create your own new archetypes influenced by her presentation.
