Architecture can appear overwhelming, but by training our eye to see past detail, we can convey buildings in paint very powerfully. In this class students will strengthen their perceptual acuity with regards to seeing buildings and structures more confidently and clearly: simplifying, conveying details, edge variety, sighting angles. We will begin by completing smaller and faster studies, while working in either grayscale or a limited palette. These small studies will teach us how to see complex information simple, and clearly. Day two we will begin longer session paintings, using a full palette and slowly begin adding details, learning how to sight angles, assess perspective issues simply, and vary our edges and marks to create more nuance paintings.

Working from the still life, cityscapes, and the life model, utilize short, small painting exercises to learn new ways of starting paintings, keeping compositions open to adjustment, and both initiating and retaining a sense of freshness in your forms and brushstrokes. When we arrive at a difficult place in the studio, are we comfortable being outside the comfort zone and then, where do we turn to make decisions about what’s next? Are we willing to risk diving deep into an instinctual response with no care for right or wrong? And how do we construct the confidence to risk acting intuitively? Play requires relearning how to forget all the regimentation, rules, techniques that we’ve been ‘taught’, and getting totally lost is the primary way forward to the pace where illumination can occur if we get out of our own way. This class is devoted to developing, toughening, and honing your visual confidence, and not to making pretty pictures that galleries might want.

Michelle is offering a call to action for artists to move away from traditional depictions of still life and create more dynamic and lively compositions. It could also refer to the idea that even though the objects in a still life painting are not moving, they still have the potential to convey movement and energy through the use of color, texture, brushwork and composition.
Essentially, this phrase could be seen as a reminder to explore new and unconventional ways of depicting the way light and shadow affect still life subjects.

This workshop is not about the traditional way of painting the figure. If you want to take a risk by exploring new ways of expressing the human form, this class is for you. Paint and draw the human figure in a looser and more expressionistic contemporary manner. Refine your painting skills to create a lively surface which will be considered a playground for intuitive creativity, technique, and skill. Expert instruction and advice from the instructor will push students to explore new possibilities and work more intuitively, allowing unplanned marks and passages to become artistic breakthroughs. Establish pictorial unity through visual metaphor and focal points and explore the power of using “active” and “quiet” areas.

Acrylic paint pouring involves a bit of chemistry, as ratios and fluidity have a direct impact on the end result. Heavier paints sink as lighter ones come to the surface creating beautiful cells. It’s also an exciting and fun technique because you don’t know what the finished product will look like! Sandy West carries a BFA in Commercial Art, which has allowed her to play with an expansive array of mediums. However, her innate style of illustration glimmers in all of her pieces. She is a long-time resident of the Florida Keys and has been sharing her love of art with others as an instructor at several venues, and as an artist through her own works depicting the tropical surroundings.

Patrick Lee takes a unique creative approach to making paintings in the studio and en plein air. He draws heavily on intuition and imagination to develop an image, often altering the drawing, color, and spatial relationships to create a mood and express a feeling about the subject. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. This gives the viewer an opportunity to connect with each piece in their own way, inviting them to let their own imaginations make personal associations and connections. This two-day workshop focuses on painting interiors from photographic and memory references, as well as establishing a mood through lighting, color, and composition.

Really getting to know a landscape, instead of just identifying elements of it, makes us better, more sensitive landscape painters. Each landscape has a personality and something to say. It’s when we begin to really understand why a landscape draws us in and captures our imagination that we become better able to advance from simply copying the obvious aspects of the landscape to incorporating mood and atmosphere and those hard-to-define qualities that take a landscape painting from average to extraordinary. The studio portion of this workshop will focus on learning ways to create paintings that have their own voice, and the optional plein air day will focus on gathering thoughts and information, along with creating small paintings for future reference material.

There’s a bookshelf in my studio that holds more than 30 travel sketchbooks. Every time I browse through them, memories of a specific place come flooding back — and not just the sights. Sounds, scents and flavours, snippets of conversations with a farmer, the taste of my morning coffee and brioche — it’s all still there, fresh in my mind, the moment I crack open a sketchbook.
That’s what I love best about travel sketching. How the act of putting pencil and paint to paper enriches the total experience, and preserves it forever.

As an instructor, it is my sincere desire to help guide aspiring painters to find better ways to trust, develop, and listen to their artistic voice. This is not done by providing answers so much as in helping artists to ask the right questions. When we begin to grasp this and ask ourselves these fundamental questions, we are well on our way to making significant strides. The curriculum presents a comprehensive and sequential education of watercolor techniques while inspiring the development of your own unique style. The program has rolling admission; you can join anytime and start from the beginning of the curriculum.
