"Creation, Contemplation, & the Sacred Circle"
April 18 & 19, 2020

The power of creating within the sacred circle of the mandala continues to call us—for healing the broken, disjointed parts of ourselves toward a more integrated whole. Franciscan priest Richard Rohr says, “We are called to become wholemakers.” Combining the solitude of contemplative creativity with the natural landscape of MoonTree studios, we’ll join together for music, inspirational readings and reflection questions to “prime the pump” for self-expression and transformation. This two-day workshop will build sequentially, each mandala drawing giving expression to what is stirring within. A variety of media will be provided to enhance the “wholemaking” process. If you have favorite colored pencils or gel pens, please bring them along, as well as your journal.

"Process Painting: Come to the Table"
June 4-7, 2020

No previous art experience is required. You need only bring your willingness and longing to engage with creativity. Process Painting highlights the creative process as a method of self-exploration and discovery; it is not a traditional painting class. The emphasis is the process, not what appears on the paper. Using tempera paint, this form of spontaneous expression provides an opportunity to deepen the connection and the divine. The facilitator acts as a support and witness to the process by asking open-ended questions. A safe and sacred container is created by the absence of product focused commentary. Through intuitive image making, Process Painting allows access to the flow of life giving energy which summons the painter to greater consciousness and wholeness.

"Painting: Simplify the Landscape"
June 21-26, 2020

How do we select places to paint? How do we compose and adjust relationships in the landscape to fit our ideas of an invented reality? We will begin drawing from direct observation, composing quick sketches to simplify the landscape. We will discuss perspective, scale shifts, light source, value and space – all integral concepts to composing a compelling drawing. Paintings will be made later in the day, working from the same location. The light will change but the overall composition will remain. The personal approach of each student will infuse paintings that are invented and abstracted representations of the landscape. Classroom discussions will focus on other landscape painters who use a variety of ideas around color and abstraction in their work.

"Painting: Process, Perception and the Still Life"
June 21-26, 2020

This course will explore observational painting as a meditative and investigative practice that is more about process than product. Through individual still life setups, we will seek truth in the observed world while questioning how the physical construction of a painting might invoke the deeper nature of our perceptions. This course will use the subject of still life as an opportunity to question and expand the formal elements of our painting practice. Each student will begin by composing their own still life set-up that will evolve throughout the course. We will discuss and practice elements of composition, mark-making, and our ability to render light and form in a controlled environment.

"The Texture Guidebook"
August 1, 2020

Over the past two decades of writing art technique books, I have found that many artists stick with what they know works. In order to grow and experience more adventure in painting even advanced painters need to push themselves to discover new techniques. Learning a lot of acrylic texture techniques in one day can be a challenge, but when you learn the techniques by creating a book you will have an instant referral at your fingertips. Another win is that there is no pressure to make a finished composition. It is fun to layer some pastes and gels, add collage or stencil, fuse some pieces together and learn how to alter the surface so you can draw or write onto your pages.

The water shimmers behind the tress in the foreground and the abstract textures are multidimensional. You will learn about some unusual materials that can spark new ideas for future projects. This is a fascinating way to work with composition and color mixing.

For anyone eager to acquire or deepen the necessary skills--from inception of an idea to a working manuscript—Art of the Picture Book is an ideal opportunity. Award-winning author-illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh is the author of many titles, including Separate Is Never Equal, Pancho Rabbit and The Coyote, and The Princess and the Warrior. His latest book, Soldier For Equality, received an honorable mention for writing from the Pura Belpré Award earlier this year.

September 14-23, 2020

Drawing on location or “en plein air,” is a sensory experience that allows us to absorb the multi-layered aspects of a site: the temperature, sounds, warmth of the sun or cool of the shadows. Back in the studio we will work on Arches Oil paper with dry media – graphite, pastel, graphix chunks, charcoal and other materials provided for our experimentations. We will layer with thin veils of cold wax medium, fixing the dry medium and permitting additional embellishments with oil pastel. Our Day Trips will inspire us to see the region through the eyes of artists who have come before us, who all found the light, textures and temperature of this region to be the muse for their creative work.

"Painting The Figure With Expression"
September 23-26, 2020

In this class we’ll focus on figurative painting from a live model and photos. We’ll explore techniques for creating colorful, abstract patterns with a sense of movement and energy by first making a quick underpainting in acrylic, then painting into it with oil paint. For photo reference, I encourage using images with energy and motion in them, i.e. athletes, boxers, dancers, etc. Large brushes and a plastic scraper will be used to apply paint generously and to also scrape away to reveal the underlying acrylic underpainting. I’ll also be talking about edges and how blurring the line between main subject and background helps in creating an abstract pattern of forms, color and dynamism.

"Making Marks: Inventive Approaches to Unconventional Materials"
October 2-3, 2020

Often in an artist’s quest to represent their chosen subject matter with accuracy, they miss out on the unique characteristics of not only the material in hand, but other media that might better fit their ideas. In this process-based workshop, challenge convention and broaden the spectrum of materials used to make your work. See existing materials with new potential and discover new materials through experimentation. The first half of the workshop focuses on working through an array of materials, examining each for their natural qualities, noting the effects, and determining which are worth pursuing further. From there, Shane encourages you to work with one or two specific materials to tease out an individual composition or series of compositions.

"Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"
October 5-9, 2020

This intensive class is designed for individuals with little or no prior drawing training and perhaps believe that learning to draw well is only possible for those lucky people with “inborn talent”. However, it has been proven that the global skill of drawing any perceived object, person or place requires five basic component perceptual skills. These skills are the perception of edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadows, and the whole or gestalt. Global or whole skills, such as reading, driving and drawing, in time become automatic with the integration of the component skills. Instruction by Brian Bomeisler, Dr. Betty Edwards’ son. Betty Edwards and Brian Bomeisler have designed a practical three-day course in color as the next step and follow-up to Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Hands-on exercises focus on how to use color theory to achieve harmonious color, and how to see and efficiently mix specific desired hues. Students will work on still life paintings utilizing the theory and techniques they learn during the workshop. "Pattern and Decoration in Contemporary Painting"
October 16-17, 2020

More than merely pleasing to the eye, pattern provides a dynamic framework for formal and conceptual exploration. The desire for order is central to humanity and repeating decoration adorns every corner of life. This workshop urges you to consider the meditative, creative, and ubiquitous nature of pattern and incorporate it into your practice. Drawing inspiration from personal objects, the natural world, and past work, create a variety of pattern studies in your chosen medium. Demonstrations address techniques for pattern invention, the role of color, and spatial phenomena. Develop and execute a concept for the incorporation of pattern into at least one personal piece. Individualized instruction and feedback are provided as well as a facilitated group discussion. Some painting experience is required.

"Process Painting: Come to the Table"
October 16-18, 2020

Workshop participants will learn about light and color and the way watercolor behaves, dealing with dark values in watercolor, painting reflections and much, much more. Steve has enjoyed teaching watercolor for over 40 years.

"Study with a Master Series: Watercolor: Making Every Stroke Count"
August 13-15, 2020

I have a “go for the essentials and make every stroke count” approach to painting, no matter the medium. I believe this lends a sense of freshness and clarity to the work, especially watercolor. Emphasis in this workshop will be on helping students find the essential elements and qualities in the subject matter, and through demonstrations and group critiques show how to present them in a simple, direct way. The object is to eliminate extraneous information and details, and simplify the subject. Students will be encouraged to look beyond the representational aspect of the subject to the dynamics of contrast, light, movement, space; elements which help make paintings come alive. Students will work from their own photos or sketches.
