"Art & Literacy in the 18th & 19th Centuries (Online)"
Tuesdays, March 9 - April 6, 2021

The Gentleman’s Magazine served as the primary source for knowledge and learning during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Long articles in extremely small type covered subjects as diverse as science, architecture, antiquities, and history. Stock prices, British and foreign news, and life-cycle announcements were regular features. The illustrations (usually in the form of engravings) enabled those with poor reading skills to engage with the textual content. This course examines the intersection of art and literacy in eighteenth-century Britain and beyond. Note: No class on March 30.

Wednesdays, March 10 - April 7, 2021

Thomas Eakins’ two medical masterpieces, The Gross Clinic and The Agnew Clinic were both displayed at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This course examines Eakins’ “modernized” use of a long-standing genre that made The Gross Clinic appear so off-putting to viewers in its initial reception. Discussion will also consider whether Eakins’ participation in the Chicago World’s Fair contributed to the racial inequality promoted by the fair’s organizers. Note: No class on March 31.

I will send photos of portraits together with drawings that you can trace - or use your own! Also will send a few figure photos to interpret gesturally. A recording of the workshop will be sent everyday to attendees (in case you have to miss something). 6 1/2 hours from 9:30am EST with lunch and painting breaks. Enrollment limited.

"Mandala Soul Rocks Workshop"
March 15, 2021

In this workshop we will create beautiful mandala designs on rocks. Beginning with a smooth, roundish or oval rock (about 3” diameter) we will use dotting tools, acrylic craft paint and small brushes to create a mandala-like pattern. This is a delicate, meditative process. I encourage you to play soft music in your background. This process is not difficult, but takes time and practice to perfect. After the paint has set you will glaze the rock with gloss medium. Once you have these tools and instructions you can continue on to create beautiful rocks. I often leave these in hidden places for others to “discover”.
