"Classical Design for the Contemporary Artist (Online)"
September 21 - November 29, 2020
 

Design is the application of the formal elements of aesthetics to an artwork to enhance its strengths. This course will explain the formal elements of design: composition, space, value, light, color, line, and texture/pattern. Course content will include art historical discussions using artists past and present to exemplify design, short video demonstrations of the applications of each principle, and time to experiment and apply what you learned. In the final three classes, students will apply these elements to their work, with formal critiques at the end of each class. This class will be team taught by Shushana Rucker and Charles Muldowney, allowing students to benefit from varied input during critiques and different points of view during lectures and discussions.

An in-depth approach to understanding and mixing color for oil painting from the Chair of PAFA’s Painting Department and noted author of Foundations of Drawing: A Practical Guide to Art History, Tools, Techniques, and Styles, Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice, and Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Direct Painting. Explore history, palettes, mixing and application for still life, portrait, interior spaces and landscape through a series of studio paintings. Investigate how to create mood and atmosphere, movement, drama, contrasts, beautiful harmonies and delicate subtleties. "Stretching watercolor paper and painting the Glorious Colors of New England (Online)"

I am really thrilled to be teaching this 3-day workshop where I’ll be able to show you the benefits of the unique way in which I stretch my watercolor paper. The value of the pigment that you put on the paper will dry just about exactly the value you put down. Your loaded brush strokes go on the paper just like “cream”. Brooklyn-based painter and renowned PAFA alum Christine Lafuente is back with an all new oil painting master class. In this class, Christine will relate the concepts of tone, temperature, and key not only to color-mixing and paint-handling techniques, but also to an understanding of light source in the personal studio set-up. Instruction will guide students through a series of investigations of how different light sources affect composition, palette organization, and the building of a painting. Students will work from observation using their own still life or interior set-up, and must be prepared to rearrange studio furniture and move around in their personal painting spaces.
