"Randy Sexton - Expressive Brushwork"
Wednesdays, February 2-23, 2022

This class is taught live via Zoom. California-based artist Randall Sexton is nationally known for his use of expressive brushwork. Like your signature, your brushwork is recognizable. In this 4-week class, Sexton will share his methods for creating loose expressive brushwork and will cover fundamentals of successful picture-making: three dimensionality, value, color mixing, brushwork, paint quality, mood and concept. Whatever the subject matter, the success of any painting relies on a solid understanding of the basic principles of picture making in tandem with the creativity and passion of the artist.

"Palette Knife Painting for Sky and Water in Oils or Acrylics"
February 11, 2022

We often think that the palette knife will only be useful for painting highly textured subjects or for working in a thick, impasto method. Imagine painting beautiful, smooth water with reflections and dramatic skies. Once you learn how to hold and to load your palette knife with paint, these effects will seem to happen automatically as you paint. Alex will be painting in oils, but the method is the same for acrylics. Paint along in either oil or acrylic.

Through a step-by-step demonstration and a running commentary, Keiko will guide you through her creative process to explain how she uses color as a useful tool. "Six Primary Colors for Unlimited Possibilities"
March 11, 2022

Imagine painting with a wide variety of colors by mixing only six specially chosen colors. Painting with a limited palette of colors is one sure way to achieve unity and color harmony. The word “limited” makes us think we won’t have lots of colors, but with the three primary colors, we can mix all the colors. Alex Sharma will demonstrate the mixing possibilities and the wide color variations achievable. Paint along in any medium.

"Mix all the greens you'll ever need"
March 28-29, 2022

By mixing your own greens you are able to create transparent, glowing, warm and cool variations that can be adapted to any subject, season, lighting or weather. Simply by looking at a tree or field or any “green” subject and seeing all of the colors except green will be your first step towards gaining a repertoire of warm and cool combinations to use when painting subjects that our brain tells us are “green”. We will “name” the green in the painting, and then choose pigments to mix it. These paintings are all in the “spring” palette. Within each are warm and cool colors of different values.

"Design & the Power of Imagination"

As an instructor, it is my sincere desire to help guide aspiring painters to find better ways to trust, develop, and listen to their artistic voice. This is not done by providing answers so much as in helping artists to ask the right questions. When we begin to grasp this and ask ourselves these fundamental questions, we are well on our way to making significant strides. The curriculum presents a comprehensive and sequential education of watercolor techniques while inspiring the development of your own unique style. The program has rolling admission; you can join anytime and start from the beginning of the curriculum. Each month you will progress through a new 4-8 hour video series while honing your style & technique.
