Students will work from observation using their own still life or interior set-up, and must be prepared to rearrange studio furniture and move around in their personal painting spaces. Mornings will consist of lecture and demonstration on Zoom, afternoons will be devoted to painting time and individual instruction.

"Creating the Illusion of Depth: Atmospheric Perspective"
June 24, 2021

Online Zoom Demo. The illusion of depth in a painting—whether non-objective or realistic—can be very dynamic and pleasing. This appearance is called atmospheric perspective and is used to make contours or objects appear 3-dimensional and to recede into the distance. This effect is obtained by changing values (lightness and darkness) of the color and by reducing the intensity of the color. In a 2-part demo, Alex will demonstrate how to achieve this illusion of depth in both an abstract, and a landscape painting. Alex will be using oils, but the methods and color mixings are the same for all painting media. Plan to paint in your medium of choice.

"Optical Color in Painting (Online)"
Thursdays, July 8 - August 12, 2021

Enrich your painting practice through an understanding of optical color, the perception of color resulting from the combination of hues placed next each other, rather than physically mixed. Just as important as admixture (the blending of pigments), optical mixing through the application of adjacent color strokes allows the creation of a variety of luminous effects. Examine optical color through historical examples from 13th-century egg tempera painting to the light-filled work of the Impressionists and Pointillists. Demystify this exciting perceptual phenomenon and learn how to apply it to your own art by working within a structured plan from varied subject matter in acrylic or gouache paint. Instruction features lecture, and demonstration, and ample references.
