"Source to Studio"
November 8-12, 2021

This workshop is aimed at the more experienced landscape oil painter who wishes to explore the ideas, techniques and issues involved with expanding upon studies successfully in the studio. Jill Carver will discuss concepts and techniques aimed to resolve and strengthen motifs and improve overall design, from initial ‘thought boards’ to actual techniques. She will discuss the science of how we see and how we can control and excite eye movement. Moving on from advanced design concepts, Jill will tackle the practical techniques of scaling up a design through ‘surface quality’ issues of working larger, working wet-over-dry, re-working passages that need correction, and the use of mediums, glazing techniques and varnishes. Students will work from their own visual material.

Students will be working from photo references to complete at least one small preliminary study in order to realize one larger rendition of the same scene and undertake the challenges that come along with this process. The course will address how to use photo references to create a painting. Students will learn a subdued tonal palette as well as various techniques with which to render low light scenes. Students will learn over the course of four days, both direct and indirect painting methods. The larger piece will be built upon day by day creating layers and depth in the final painting.

"Understanding Color-The Power of a Limited Palette"
November 30 - December 3, 2021

Color is fascinating, mysterious, and magical. Rarely will two artists see color the same. However, there are certain irrefutable truisms in painting, one is the fewer colors used, the stronger and more harmonious the statement. In this workshop we will explore the power of a limited palette. Working from a “standard” palette of 12-14 colors, students will calculate progressive sequences on the color wheel to create complimentary schemes, simple triads, and dynamic triads of color, referred to as harmonic chords, comprised of three to six colors, and explore how to select the best color set to serve our concept. This is a logical and practical process for orchestrating a harmonious limited palette for a specific painting.

"Landscape Painting from Start to Finish: Creating Atmosphere, Space and Light"
December 4-6, 2021

The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep - a transparent sea of air. As we look out into the vista, we plainly see its effects on the landscape. When painters begin to go outside and use natural lighting, they will find that nature’s value scale is immeasurably beyond their own tiny value scale. Learn how to make a true representation of any scene in nature using “relative” rather than “absolute” or actual values and color relationships. Expect concept lectures, demonstration, and individual instruction as Doug winds students through the myriad of knowledge needed for artists to develop their skills for painting beautiful and believable space. Students will be painting from photos during the three-day workshop.

"Building A Solid Foundation"
December 6-7, 2021

Making a clear statement comes from a solid foundation of the basic vocabulary of painting. Areas of study that this workshop will cover in order to build that foundation are: How the principles of light work to create value and color relationships, edges, and form. In the painting process we often find ourselves not knowing what to do next to progress forward to that statement of clarity that we originally hoped to achieve. This is where Dan wants to meet the student and begin to discover how to take the work to the next level. Once the artist has a grasp on the foundational aspects of painting, they will soon find a freedom that opens the path to creating.

In addition to materials, students will be expected to bring their own references to work from, preferably landscape, as this is Christine’s area of expertise, particularly in rendering light effects. "Suggesting Reality"
January 10-14, 2022

Through art, subjects become significant to us in unique ways, aesthetically and conceptually. This workshop will reinforce an understanding of composition, tone theory and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. We will discuss the subtleties, variations, lines, textures and colors that enliven our senses and captivate our interest; the way our eyes perceive things and how we make choices regarding their relative importance; the suggestion of the passage of time; the relative states of motion and stillness; how the artist may represent nature in order to reflect his or her perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the important power of content, symbol and abstraction.

"Painting The Poetic Landscape"
January 21-23, 2022

Once you learn the mechanics of painting the landscape, it’s time to learn how to add the magic…the poetry. We’ll examine the difference between paintings that merely contain elements of the landscape, and those that convey a distinct visual message… and how to gain the skills necessary to accomplish this. We’ll cover some methods that will help you develop a strong composition and edit unnecessary details that detract from the emotion you want to convey. Each day will begin with a demonstration followed by students working on a specific painting exercise. Instructor demos will include both oil and pastel. This workshop is open to all levels, although artists with at least some basic landscape painting experience will benefit most.

Students will leave this workshop excited and ready to experiment more on their own. Students will be pointed toward meaningful, personal, artistic growth. Participants will receive a free copy of “Plein air, Right from the Start.” The workshop will include lectures and demonstrations, individual painting time, personalized instruction and group discussions. The historic village of Tubac provides old adobe buildings and street scenes to paint. Nearby, students will paint the beautiful Spanish Church built in 1828 at the Tumacacori Mission. "Plein Air with Mark Boedges"
February 28 - March 4, 2022

“Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time everything else in my painting flows from this.” – Mark Boedges. "Seeing and Capturing your Subject"
April 4-8, 2022

What does the act of ‘seeing’ mean for an artist? Discover the answers in this 5-day workshop as we explore the specifics of observing a subject, interpreting the visual elements, and executing it all onto canvas. We will discuss the way the optics of the eye work as well as seeing light, form, atmosphere and space. The fundamental principles of painting - composition, drawing, value, color, and edges will also be stressed. Each day we will begin with a demo, followed by a fun day of painting and personal instruction. Students may choose to work from their favorite photos and field sketches or set up still lifes. "Plein Air Painting in Beartooth, Montana"
June 13-17, 2022

Landscape painting is mostly about learning how to see; how to interpret, compare and edit the shapes and colors of the scene we choose to paint. In other words, to not see literally the mountains, trees, grass, water, etc. but to see them as an interesting and beautiful arrangement of shapes and colors. This opens up a whole lot more possibilities for things to paint and also helps us find our own voice. Students will concentrate on the process of painting and not be so concerned with doing “finished” paintings. Students will work on what makes a plein air painting work; the mood, rhythm and movement along with an interesting and compelling arrangement of values, masses and color.

"Painting in Provence: Watercolor Painting Workshop"
October 9-16, 2022

Join Uma Kelkar for a wonderful week in Provence. Participants will learn how to employ just enough shapes, colors and stroked to achieve maximum impact. This is Uma’s definition of elegance. Exercises during each day will build up towards a final painting. We will focus on the technical skills at the beginning followed by discussion of elements of design and Uma’s philosophy of painting. If you’ve always wanted to overcome the fear of wet on wet painting, rest assured that at the end of the workshop, you will feel more confident about approaching it independently.

"Modern Impressionism in Action"
October 19-22, 2022

Colley Whisson believes "It is not what you paint but how you paint it". He has a strong belief that he is not copying nature but giving expression to visual ideas. Colley teaches the fundamentals needed to produce paintings with powerful light effects, loose brushwork and sensitivity to the subject. Colley's workshops are conducted in a positive and uplifting manner. In this workshop, he will focus on tone, composition, brushwork, color saturation, and pay special attention to the importance of edges. Colley employs a step-by-step process, demonstrating to all levels of students the best approach to constructing a painting. Weather permitting, Colley will conduct an outdoor demonstration to show his approach to working on site, or 'en plein air'.
