This provides a springboard to adding additional information, if the individual artist desires. Students will experience many specific assignments, which will help them to “get to the point a little more quickly.” Be ready to cover a lot of canvas and to “learn through earnest mileage.” Students will receive plenty of one-on-one instruction and individual demonstrations will be given as needed. "Painting Fog and Light in Watercolor (Online)"
March 17-19, 2021

Join us in painting this morning scene from Newfoundland. In this workshop you will: Paint edges that merge into the next, changing color and value with no blossoms or “run-backs.” Build a variety of textures. Mix neutrals that create the mood, and use complements to make those neutrals come alive. Increase your facility to judge the amount of pigment and water in your brush, your mixture and on your paper so that the value that you put down, dries almost exactly the same value. Practice putting a full loaded brush stroke on your paper, and leaving it alone, thus avoiding over-working and “muddy” mixtures. Distinguish between the effects of opaque pigments vs. transparent pigments, and the times it is appropriate to use each.

"Understanding Color-The Power of a Limited Palette"
May 10-13, 2021

In order to be successful, a painting must have five elements: Concept, Composition, Drawing, Values, and Color. Of these five elements, color is the most fascinating, mysterious, and magical. Rarely will two artists see color the same. However, the laws of color harmony are as mathematically fixed as the law of gravity. There are certain irrefutable truisms in painting, one is the fewer colors used, the stronger and more harmonious the statement. In this workshop we will explore the power of a limited palette. Working from a “standard” palette of 12-14 colors, students will explore how to select the best color set to serve our concept. Each new piece will require an entirely new working palette. The possibilities are limitless.
