"Paint a Vintage Scene of Edinburgh in Watercolor"
June 14-15, 2021

In this class we will explore how to use vintage photography as a reference for watercolor paintings. Our objective will be taking a black and white photograph and, using value as our guide, create a painting in color that reflects how we perceive the reference. Our goal is not an exact replica but to breathe new life into forgotten times. There are many sources of imagery to be found on the internet and during this time of slowed travel I have found solace in a sort of time travel. Looking at cities I love and the old places there that are now gone.

"Plein Air Painting in Beartooth, Montana"
June 14-18, 2021

Landscape painting is mostly about learning how to see; how to interpret, compare and edit the shapes and colors of the scene we choose to paint. We will try to see things less literally, but in more of an “Abstract” way. In other words, to not see literally the mountains, trees, grass, water, etc. but to see them as an interesting and beautiful arrangement of shapes and colors. This is to see them more as an artist and it then opens up a whole lot more possibilities for things to paint and also helps us find our own voice. Students will work on the mood, rhythm and movement along with an interesting and compelling arrangement of values, masses and color.

Wednesdays, June 16-30, 2021

Impasto is a technique in which paint is applied in very thick layers, often with visible brush or painting-knife strokes, to impart texture, expression, or even sculptural effects. Impasto techniques have been an essential part of painting history, from the underlying vigorous brushwork of Renaissance artists to the distinctive mark-making of past and contemporary masters such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, de Kooning, Soutine, Lucian Freud, and Auerbach. Learn techniques to build a thick, textured surface to find your own unique impasto style in this course.

"Creating the Illusion of Depth: Atmospheric Perspective"
June 24, 2021

Online Zoom Demo. The illusion of depth in a painting—whether non-objective or realistic—can be very dynamic and pleasing. This appearance is called atmospheric perspective and is used to make contours or objects appear 3-dimensional and to recede into the distance. This effect is obtained by changing values (lightness and darkness) of the color and by reducing the intensity of the color. In a 2-part demo, Alex will demonstrate how to achieve this illusion of depth in both an abstract, and a landscape painting. Alex will be using oils, but the methods and color mixings are the same for all painting media. Plan to paint in your medium of choice.

"Landscape Painting Fundamentals"
August 9-11, 2021

Students will paint the landscape from photos in the cool indoors of the classroom studio. They will approach the indoor class as if they are outdoors, focusing on quickly getting that solid ‘block-in’. This will progress by painting many small canvases each day. A solid start is key to a successful painting. Learning to paint is about learning to see. As a student learns to accurately see, they can emulate this information in a more truthful way, and they discover what a painting doesn’t need. Then suddenly everyone in the class has paint on their clothes! This is a painting adventure. Be ready to have fun and learn!

Using suggested patterns from an underlying texture, she captures this feeling by establishing strong color schemes, dynamic compositions, and gestural strokes using various tools. During the course of this workshop, Sarah will discuss the value of compositions, structure of natural forms, and development of color schemes. You will learn how to “see” landscape forms as masses of interlocking shapes and values, thus creating an abstract, yet recognizable landscape painting.

September 2-9, 2022

Come along with me to France for a week of painting the French Alps. All the logistics will be taken care of – all you have to do is relax and enjoy as we sketch Alpine meadows, cobblestoned villages, wooden chalets with flowery boxes and spectacular lakes and mountains. We’ll also paint in Annecy, known as the Venice of the North, a beautiful medieval city surrounded by canals and mountains. We’ll capture these once-in-a-lifetime experiences on the pages of our travel journals. The workshop is suitable for all levels, but some experience with drawing and watercolor would be helpful.

"Painting in Spain: Travel Sketching in Watercolor"
September 10-17, 2022

The best thing about our itinerary for travel sketching in Spain is the sheer breadth of subjects to choose from — that, and the near-magical light and colour of this unique part of the world. In our week together I’ll teach you techniques for capturing the close-up and colourful in villages and towns, as well as the distant and scenic on the magical coast of Costa Brava. We’ll sketch the sea, majestic cliffs, boats, a botanical garden, a castle, a medieval village, etc… In true travel sketching tradition, we’ll pack light — carrying a small bag for art materials and a folding stool (that will be provided). This workshop is designed to give you confidence sketching wherever you are.

Exercises during each day will build up towards a final painting. We will focus on the technical skills at the beginning followed by discussion of elements of design and Uma’s philosophy of painting.
