"Landscape Painting: Beyond the Photo (Online)"
December 7-11, 2020

Among representational artists, there has been an endless battle between those who paint from life and those who use photographic reference. The real problem lies not in painting from life or photos but whether we’re simply copying what we see as opposed to using the information as a springboard for creating the paintings we want. In this 5-day workshop, participants will work in the studio from photographic reference of the landscape, using it to create paintings of different value keys, color keys, times of day, and seasons of the year. We’ll break down the information in photos, analyze it, and use it to create tonal sketches, change color palettes, and create paintings based on multiple images, memory, and imagination.

January 11-15, 2021

Art reveals the evidence of our experiences and values. This workshop will not only reinforce an understanding of composition and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. Students will participate in discussions regarding the subtleties, variations, lines, textures and colors that enliven our senses and captivate our interest; the way our eyes perceive things and how we make choices regarding their relative importance; the suggestion of the passage of time; the relative states of motion and stillness; how the artist may represent nature in order to reflect on his or her perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the important power of content, symbol and abstraction. Douglas demonstrates frequently.

"Painting in Spain: Urban Sketching in Pen & Ink and Watercolor and Watercolor"
May 9-16, 2021

My aim as a teacher is always to help my students bring out their own voice in their sketchbook, and to give them confidence in their own style. To do that, I help them get over thorny issues such as how to bring out the beauty of watercolour and make colour pop without clashing, how to master pen and ink and how to bring depth and interest to compositions. My students bring their sketchbooks to pretty villages, down quiet side streets, outside cafés, into bustling markets and wherever there is life and colour. My specialities as a teacher are storytelling and visual reportage; reflections and foliage; capturing people on the move and easy ways to tackle perspective.

"Understanding Color-The Power of a Limited Palette"
May 10-13, 2021

In order to be successful, a painting must have five elements: Concept, Composition, Drawing, Values, and Color. Of these five elements, color is the most fascinating, mysterious, and magical. Rarely will two artists see color the same. However, the laws of color harmony are as mathematically fixed as the law of gravity. There are certain irrefutable truisms in painting, one is the fewer colors used, the stronger and more harmonious the statement. In this workshop we will explore the power of a limited palette. Working from a “standard” palette of 12-14 colors, students will explore how to select the best color set to serve our concept. Each new piece will require an entirely new working palette. The possibilities are limitless.

"Find The Essence: Plein Air Painting In Watercolor"
July 6-8, 2021

Creating successful en plein air paintings in changing conditions is challenging. Light, shade, and shadows can change rapidly and dramatically over the course of just a few hours. Learning to simplify the scene and fixing it at a point in time are the most important factors in creating successful en Plein air landscape paintings. We’ll work from about 9 am to 4 pm each day. The instructor will do short demos each morning and we’ll end each day with a gentle review and critique of the day’s work. We’ll also stay late one evening to work on the particular challenge of capturing the evening sky and shady landscape.

Paint the summer colors at this beautiful and historic location overlooking the beautiful Connecticut River Valley while relaxing in the comfort of the Gibson House Inn. This workshop will focus on plein air landscape painting with some classroom instruction and will be open to all abilities. Born 1954, in Rochester, NY, Robert O'Brien has been painting in the watercolor medium for thirty years. Since moving to Vermont in 1977, he has focused his work on landscape and architectural studies. The artist finds beauty in the ordinary, subtle reminders of everyday life in rural New England. "Online Art Mentoring-Customized Drawing, Painting and Mural Painting"
Anytime

The Online Art Mentorship is a long distance learning from the comfort of your home at the time that most suits your needs. You will be able to practice drawing, painting and/or mural painting at your own pace, getting systematic instructions and feedbacks on the art project you are working on. Note that, because of the nature of the one-to-one mentoring, each student will be taken great care and time in personalised critiques and lessons. This is a most affordable and time flexible learning practice which requires self-discipline and commitment. The students will need to be open to work under guidance and critique to be able to reach goals and experience art technique and creativity improvement.

"From Seen to Scene, Framing Your Vision"
ongoing

This course is a four part modular format enabling online mentorship for an entire year…. a unique opportunity at a great value. The course is designed to encourage artists at all levels to explore new ways of seeing the world around them, to recognize the potential subject matter in everyday scenes, and how to translate that into paintings that share one’s unique vision. Whether the scenes are inspired by exotic travels, memories of a favorite destination, or simply your own backyard, the success of any painting relies on a solid understanding of the basic principles of picture making in tandem with your creativity and passion.
