"Fundamentals of Landscape Painting"
July 7-9, 2022

Learning to paint is all about seeing. Through direct observation we see shapes, colors and texture. Once we learn to recognize these observations (actually see what we are looking at) we can begin to emulate these forms in a more accurate way. Representational painting focuses on seeing, i.e. What color is it? How light - how dark? What size is it? Students will learn to answer these basic questions and turn those answers into brush marks, taking your work to the next level. Be ready to work and learn and have fun doing it!

"Painting Skies"
September 10-11, 2022

One of the amazing qualities of watercolor is an understanding that there is as much power in the areas of the work that are not painted as those that are. And often, to create a sky in our work, the best effects are achieved by learning what areas of our work not to paint. I usually recommend that painters play down areas of sky in a painting so that they do not threaten to dominate the work. But sometimes, the sky is the “star of the show.” In this workshop, I will focus on simple and effective ways to paint clouds and atmospheric effects in both calm and turbulent weather. Class includes lifetime access to recordings, videos, and resources.

"Landscape Painting in Oils"
October 3-5, 2022

During this landscape painting class, TJ Cunningham will focus on the two challenges that he considers the greatest impediment to a successful landscape painting. First, how to create atmosphere, and second, how to sculpt the landscape so that the trees seem vertical while the surrounding landscape appears flat. Painting time will take place in the studio and will address ideas behind a good landscape painting. TJ will begin each day with a presentation of his working process. The attendees will also receive clear instruction on how to simplify the landscape in an expressive way. Paint quality, value pattern, and abstraction will all be discussed as valuable tools when used in landscape painting.

We will focus on incorporating embedded photo prints on thin papers such as tissue and Japanese papers, as well as image transfers to create final work that is both ethereal and richly detailed in its layers. We will start off utilizing various methods of underdrawings to bring in pattern and additional detail to our work – with wood burning tools, inks, oil paints, and encaustic. Students must have a working knowledge of encaustic, as this is an intermediate level class and basics will not be covered. See website for full details.
