"Landscape Painting: Beyond the Photo (Online)"
December 7-11, 2020

Among representational artists, there has been an endless battle between those who paint from life and those who use photographic reference. The real problem lies not in painting from life or photos but whether we’re simply copying what we see as opposed to using the information as a springboard for creating the paintings we want. In this 5-day workshop, participants will work in the studio from photographic reference of the landscape, using it to create paintings of different value keys, color keys, times of day, and seasons of the year. We’ll break down the information in photos, analyze it, and use it to create tonal sketches, change color palettes, and create paintings based on multiple images, memory, and imagination.

This workshop is aimed at the more experienced landscape oil painter who wishes to explore the ideas, techniques and issues involved with expanding upon studies successfully in the studio. Jill will discuss concepts and techniques aimed to resolve and strengthen motifs and improve overall design, from initial ‘thought boards’ to actual preparation techniques. She will discuss the science of how we see and how we can control and excite eye movement. Moving on from advanced design concepts and tools, Jill will tackle the practical techniques of scaling up a design through ‘surface quality’ issues of working larger, working wet-over-dry, re-working passages that need correction, and the use of mediums, glazing techniques and varnishes.

"Landscape Painting from Start to Finish: Creating Atmosphere, Space and Light"
December 5-7, 2020

The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep - a transparent sea of air. As we look out into the vista, we may not be conscious of actually seeing the air but we plainly see its effects on the landscape. When painters begin to go outside and use natural lighting, they will find that nature’s value scale is immeasurably beyond their own. Learn how to make a true representation of any scene in nature using “relative” rather than “absolute” or actual values and color relationships. Expect concept lectures, demonstration, and individual instruction as Doug winds students through the myriad of knowledge needed to develop their skills for painting beautiful and believable space. January 11-15, 2021

Art reveals the evidence of our experiences and values. This workshop will not only reinforce an understanding of composition and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. Students will participate in discussions regarding the subtleties, variations, lines, textures and colors that enliven our senses and captivate our interest; the way our eyes perceive things and how we make choices regarding their relative importance; the suggestion of the passage of time; the relative states of motion and stillness; how the artist may represent nature in order to reflect on his or her perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the important power of content, symbol and abstraction. "Painting in Spain: Urban Sketching in Pen & Ink and Watercolor and Watercolor"
May 9-16, 2021

My aim as a teacher is always to help my students bring out their own voice in their sketchbook, and to give them confidence in their own style. To do that, I help them get over thorny issues such as how to bring out the beauty of watercolour and make colour pop without clashing, how to master pen and ink and how to bring depth and interest to compositions. My students bring their sketchbooks to pretty villages, down quiet side streets, outside cafés, into bustling markets and wherever there is life and colour. My specialities as a teacher are storytelling and visual reportage; reflections and foliage; capturing people on the move and easy ways to tackle perspective.

"Painting the Day"
August 20-22, 2021

We do not see things as they are, but rather as light, shadow, and air reveal them. The light of each day is unique and specific to the time, place, and weather. During this two day retreat scheduled over a moonrise, we will examine how with some foundational principles of the prismatic palette, the grammar of light and air can ground us in our work by helping us see the gift of each day. Enjoy the beauty of Lake Superior, healthy, locally sourced meals, inspired lodging, and retreat amenities, all in peaceful surroundings in the woods and on the water. Lodging packages available.

"Painting in France: Oil Painting Workshop"

Join me to follow in the footsteps of master painters Monet, Pisarro, Renoir, Gaugin, Picasso, Cassatt and more. Each day we’ll enjoy artistic and cultural experiences, including the unique opportunity to paint in Monet’s Garden with no crowds. My plein air workshops are extremely comprehensive and have been described as ‘art school in a week’. I’ll de-mystify the painting process by teaching straightforward, easy to understand steps. Using tried and true principles as a jumping off point will allow you to loosen up and find your own voice. You’ll leave this class with the skills needed to take your work to the next level…both outdoors and in the studio. There will be demos, discussions, handouts, lots of painting time and individual attention.

August 26-29, 2021

Master your landscape painting and join South Carolina artist Michael Story for this four day workshop as we use the sky and water as a dramatic design element in our painting’s composition. You’’ll begin your painting with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image. Starting with shadow colors, you’ll begin blocking in your painting, then progressing dark to light to completion. Building final layers of color and avoiding muddy mixtures, you’ll achieve fresh, bright color while capturing depth, drama and mood to your work. He will demonstrate and provide photo reference to paint from if desired along with color exercises you may complete after the workshop. For more information, visit michaelstory.com.
