"Watercolor Unleashed! Watercolor on Canvas"
July 27-28, 2018

Watercolor canvas and multi-media canvas have been around for many years. Explore techniques to conquer this exciting and challenging watercolor support that allows framing without glass or mat. Painting methods – both traditional and non-traditional – will be presented during the workshop. Students will learn to use minimal “acrylic underpinnings” to set the stage for vibrant colors in their paintings and pave the way for loose watercolor washes on the canvas. (The minimal fluid acrylic needed will be provided.) A landscape scene will be used for the demo painting and a photo will be provided for use, but students are welcome to paint from their own reference material. There will be demos, instruction at all levels, critiques and lots of painting time.

"Shape-Shifting: Abstracting Nature in Watermedia"
July 30 - August 2, 2018

Examine the natural world through the lens of abstraction in this watercolor workshop. Focusing on the relationships of color and shape within the landscape, instead of individual objects, will lead you to practical solutions in shifting your painting practice toward more innovative avenues of expression. Using design principles as the underpinning of each composition, you will work from sketches and photo references. In addition to sharing technical strategies in watermedia, Dale will demonstrate how to use subjects as a source for abstraction by simplifying images and breaking them down to their core elements. This workshop will consist of demonstrations, slide lectures, individual instruction, and group critiques.

Watercolor paintings can be so much more than a checklist of watercolor technique. David Daniels goes beyond the basics of paint application, and teaches how to construct strong, vibrant, personality filled paintings. Technique is very important to this discipline, but it is the composition of your painting that will engage your viewer. When strong compositions and thoughtful technique are combined, it is an unbeatable combination. David shows how to carefully construct a watercolor using preliminary sketches and value studies. He will also demonstrate his methods of using multiple glazes of wet-into-wet passages to achieve unsurpassed brilliance as well as the use of masking agents to achieve jewel-like clarity. September 10-14, 2018

This five day workshop will focus on painting on location (plein air) as a form of study and not as a performance art. The practice is intended to heighten the artist's knowledge of nature and to elevate the artistic sensibility to it. We will discuss and examine not only "how" to create work outdoors, but also "why". This conceptual aspect of painting is the very essence of artistic intent. All media are welcome, however the daily demos will be conducted in oil.

October 22-25, 2018

Develop a powerfully expressive visual vocabulary, and ultimately dynamic paintings in this exploration of watercolor painting methods. New approaches will allow you to make leaps in your understanding and avoid many of the common pitfalls of painting, such as inaccurate perspective, poor color mixing, and feeling restrained by the details of a scene. Each morning and afternoon will begin with a quick demonstration to illustrate the day’s lesson, including simplifying scenes into large shapes and value tones, accurate drawing, sequencing for building a painting, and expressive color. The remainder of the time will be dedicated to hands-on practice. If time allows, a group critique will review each day’s progress.

"Painting in Tuscany: Travel Sketching in Watercolor"
September 17-24, 2019

The best thing about our itinerary for travel sketching in Tuscany is the sheer breadth of subjects to choose from — that, and the near-magical light and colour of this unique part of the world. In our week together I’ll teach you techniques for capturing the close-up and colourful in villages and towns, as well as the distant and scenic in Italian landscapes. We’ll sketch, rolling hills with vineyards, olive groves, hillside towns and panoramas. In true travel sketching tradition, we’ll pack light — carrying a small bag for art materials and a folding stool. This workshop is designed to give you confidence sketching wherever you are. We’ll work spontaneously, and I’ll show you how to keep your watercolour sketches fresh and colourful.
