Art Workshops, Classes & Retreats

"Watercolor: Starting Small"
Tuesdays, September 21-22, 2021

Sometimes beginners can find large canvases daunting and a little scary. I find it much less stressful to paint small in the beginning! Join us for some fun exploring, learning, or reviewing some watercolor basics and techniques. On our first day, we will be painting some 5” by 7” paintings. These can be placed in small frames or used as greeting cards or to start a notebook for future reference. On our second day, we will finish one or more of the 5 by 7 pieces and then try one 9” by 12” piece. We will learn to use a grid to take one of our smaller pieces to the larger 9 by 12 piece while keeping it in perspective.

"The Illustrated Letter"
November 4-18, 2021

Artists and authors have been illustrating their correspondence for centuries. Beatrix Potter sprinkled her letters with bunnies in the garden, Saint Exupery drew stars, Picasso, Victor Hugo, Gaugin, Corot and Van Gogh all combined words and pictures when writing to friends—just to name a few. Of course, these artists and authors didn’t have access to email or texts (thank goodness!) And although we do, I think it might be time for a “Slow Letter” movement, much like Slow Food, where we take the time and make the effort to communicate in a more creative, personal way. Join me as we explore this old idea, with words and pictures of our own. All skill levels welcome!

"Beyond Description: Expressive Painting through Image Structure"
November 8-12, 2021

Your growth as an artist is my priority as we study great artists and unlock the universal secrets of image structure. At a primal level, it’s this abstract image structure that moves us-- the use of line, shape, space, value, color, and texture. This applies to any style or genre of painting because every good painting is good due to the underlying abstraction - the power of the purely visual. The plan is always to help you reach your potential, painting your way, with your voice and vision, but better than ever before. You can paint representational or abstract. Oils, watercolors, collage, and acrylics welcome. Come be encouraged and inspired in a fun, upbeat atmosphere.

"Painting the Figure from Photographs"

Ted Nuttall will demonstrate the techniques, and instill the confidence to enjoy painting people. Ted will discuss the benefits of photographic reference, as well as how to interpret a photo in order to give life and energy to the subject. In Ted’s daily demonstrations and presentations, he will share his personal approach to painting. Plus, he will introduce the work of other artists with the objective of inspiring enriched seeing and thinking skills. What’s more, significant time is allowed for one-on- one instruction in an atmosphere that’s both creative and supportive – regardless of skill level.

"Interpreting Your Photographic Reference"
Saturdays, December 4-18, 2021

Painters often use photographic references when creating works of art. During this three-session class, students will paint the subject of their choice using their photographic reference. The painter must understand that photography often misrepresents the true relationships of value, color and perspective. With guidance, the student will learn to consider the photographic reference as raw material, to be interpreted rather than slavishly copied. Let’s make “art” from photographic reference! This class is open to all levels of experience and all mediums! Please bring several photos of interest to each class. *Students may also choose to paint still-life arrangements.

Painting portraits can be intimidating to say the least, but I want to show you how to let go of that fear! In this class you will need some drawing skills behind you to achieve good contour drawings for your paintings. We will dissect the face and put it back together, and from there I will show you how to cross those lines to get good connecting shapes within your subjects and to your backgrounds. We will concentrate on composition, the use of color, lights and darks, and where to use soft and hard edges.
