Basics, such as composition, color, drawing accuracy and animal anatomy will be part of this course, but rendering textures like fur and feathers, which bring animals to life on the canvas will be a special focus. Although students can work in any medium, the weekly demonstrations will be done in casein and gouache. Art historical examples and contemporary uses of animal imagery, as well as student discussion of their own work will also be a major part of the sessions.

Absolutely no drawing experience necessary in David Lobenberg’s California Vibe Watercolor Portraiture™ workshop. He uses a reference photo and tracing technique that’s super simple to execute. Throughout the course of the workshop, artists learn: How to shoot dramatic, stylistic reference photos with a smart phone and natural daylight. How to utilize a simple photo/tracing technique to prepare for the painting process. How to bust through the color barrier. How to mix gutsy colors with a minimal five-color palette. How to merge positive and negative stencil embellishment techniques into their portraits. Artists will have the where-with-all to follow their own path towards creating California Vibe Watercolor Portraits™! "Entrance to Red Cliff Canyon - Watercolor Painting"
June 3-4, 2022

We’ll use the reference photo to inspire without feeling like we need to duplicate or copy. Blocking in the large value shapes and letting the paint mix and flow freely will allow for a dynamic underpainting. The challenge & the key will be to know what needs to be added and what is best left alone. Sometimes, if we can trust the process and be open to those “happy accidents,” the painting almost paints itself!

"Watercolor: Starting Small"
June 7-8, 2022

Sometimes beginners just starting out can find mid-size to large canvases daunting and a little scary. I find it much less stressful to paint small in the beginning! Join us for some fun exploring, learning, or reviewing some watercolor basics and techniques to build on. On our first day, we will be painting some 5” by 7” paintings. These can be placed in small frames or used as greeting cards or to start a notebook for future reference as you continue on your watercolor journey. On our second day, we learn to use a grid to take one of our smaller pieces to the larger 9 by 12 piece while keeping it in perspective. Hope to see you there!

Tuesdays, June 7 - July 12, 2022

Rocks, Pebbles, Boulders, Cliffs: the “bedrock” of landscape painting. Creating the shapes and depth of individual rocks and rocky outcroppings, learning to combine many rocks and pebbles into a single collective shape that says “rock” without detailing each is crucial to successful landscape painting. This class will focus on the challenge of painting a landscape in which rocks, boulders and cliffs are a significant feature. A photo will be provided for your use, but you are always welcome and encouraged to paint from your own reference material. There will be demos, instruction and individual critique throughout the Zoom class. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting!

"Venice Canals- Rustic Textures and Reflective Water"
June 25-26, 2022

In this course I will show you how to paint the seemingly complex textures and reflections we all associate with Venice. At the heart of all good paintings there is the narrative of what you specifically want to say about your subject. For this painting that subject is time and its effects on buildings and how water can be used to illuminate them in unique ways. Confidence in your brush strokes and mark making is the most important tool in a watercolorist’s arsenal. Instead of painting and reacting to what is happening on the page my goal is to teach you to anticipate what will take place and plan ahead so you are not left guessing at what to do next.

I’m blown away by Harold Fisk’s 1944 folio of illustrations that document changes to the course of the Mississippi River over thousands of years. Come explore Fisk’s techniques that express space and time in a single image. We’ll start by selecting pages from vintage sources – encyclopedias, sheet music, ledgers, and maps! Reference the twists and turns of today’s Mississippi and create your own river on one sheet by drawing and cutting it out. Then, start imagining where that river flowed before. We’ll be painting with only four colors of watercolor and/or gouache, and drawing with Micron pens and graphite pencils. When your painted page is complete, you’ll glue your river on top for a unique mixed media piece.
