"Critique Group: Open to All Artists"
May 1, 2020

We all need feedback. As artists, we also need a second (or third) “set of eyes” on our work. We need to know how our work can be improved. We need to understand how our work is perceived by our audience – the viewer. Sometimes we can spot issues on our own, but most times we need input from others. This is where critique becomes an important part of our development as artists. Open to artists of all backgrounds and media. Moderated by PenArt’s Director of Education Elysia Michaelsen, artists reserve a 30-minute block to show and discuss your work, or just come and share your viewpoints and learn from others. Discussion formats will range from open group conversation to written critiques.

"Poured Painted Surfaces"
July 19, 2020

Putting paint on paper can be a mixed bag of unexpected surprises with unknown endings. Pouring paint onto paper will certainly give you combos of astonishingly intense and luminescent colors. This process will also allow you to discover ways to define the space around shapes with contrast and glazed colors. Part of the beauty of this technique is revealing some of the underlining imagery of shapes in selected spots. Imagine and paint the space around objects with watercolors and gouache – opaque water-based paint. Work with some very contemporary, good-vibe iridescent, interference, and opaque watercolor techniques to further enhance and embellish the surface. Discover that painting is about discovery and expression at all levels of creativity.

"Impression and Design Plein Air Workshop"
August 25-27, 2020

We will inevitably be chasing the light and seeing beyond what is there, always looking for more, to capture the sensation of the place. It all comes down to design and interpretation. Utilizing and building on what nature gives us but not being a slave to it. We will be working to simplify our shapes, really push to explore our use of temperatures and color along with controlling our values as well as our edges. Composition and design underlie all of these along with our drawing which will be our foundation. We will look to make our paintings fresh, vibrant, and full of light and color. Not being a slave to what is there but knowing how to interpret it.

"The Secrets of Painting Reflections in Transparent Watercolor"
November 11-12, 2020

In this workshop Steve will give students the tools to create painterly and believable watercolors; but more importantly, he seeks to take them beyond merely “copying” their subject. “An artist needs to also paint from his heart and seek to communicate the emotional and spiritual beauty of God’s creation.” Steve paints and teaches in a very straightforward traditional manner because he believes he can most honestly say what he wants to with his brush and juicy watercolor paint. Workshop participants will learn about light and color and the way watercolor behaves, dealing with dark values in watercolor, painting reflections and much, much more. Steve has enjoyed teaching watercolor for over 40 years.

"Study with a Master Series: Watercolor: Making Every Stroke Count"
August 13-15, 2020

I have a “go for the essentials and make every stroke count” approach to painting, no matter the medium. I believe this lends a sense of freshness and clarity to the work, especially watercolor. Emphasis in this workshop will be on helping students find the essential elements and qualities in the subject matter, and through demonstrations and group critiques show how to present them in a simple, direct way. The object is to eliminate extraneous information and details, and simplify the subject. Students will be encouraged to look beyond the representational aspect of the subject to the dynamics of contrast, light, movement, space; elements which help make paintings come alive. Students will work from their own photos or sketches.
