"Sense of Place"
July 29 - August 1, 2019

Moving beyond the traditional rectangular, flat sheet of paper, this workshop investigates the relationship between experiences in the landscape and representing those experiences in the studio. With consideration for the viewer’s interaction, create works that encompass space, tactility, and personal content. Through demonstrations, readings, and lectures, you will be introduced to the idea of creating a sense of place through materials and forms. Emphasis will be placed on the production of work. This workshop is more of an exploration of process or a way of approaching the creation of work than a tutorial on how to paint or draw. Using found materials, as well as photographs, paintings, and drawings, you will create a unique document that expresses your understanding of a place.

This is where critique becomes an important part of our development as artists. Open to artists of all backgrounds and media. Moderated by PenArt’s Director of Education Elysia Michaelsen, artists reserve a 30-minute block to show and discuss your work, or just come and share your viewpoints and learn from others. Fine tune your powers of observation in this very focused and exploratory workshop. This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, fun, informative, yet intense working environment. Romel will demonstrate every morning on his approach to painting the portrait and figure from life, using Alla Prima (a style of painting where, instead of building colors up with layers or glazing over an underpainting, the painting is completed while the paint is still wet) with the emphasis on the use of improving color, drawing skills, value relationships, understanding edges, and capturing the “feeling” of light. Learn to use the elements that make a painting stronger and exciting: creative use of color and edges, visual movement, paint application/ brush handling, distribution of abstract shapes and strong design.
