"Color & Composition: Watercolor & Pastel"
October 1-3, 9:00–4:00

Pastel artists interested in getting a fresh perspective on painting the landscape beyond the usual “green scenes” will want to join us for this exploration of pushing the boundaries of colors and compositions found in nature. We will take an experiential, non- academic approach to maximizing your color and compositional skills that offers ways to expand on an overwhelming blue/green palette, the dullness of the light, or the limitations of any available scene. Working from your own photos, watercolors and pastels, Colette will use direct instruction, numerous examples, and demonstrations to guide you towards your particular goals for your work. Discussions and critiques will keep the emphasis on your artistic concerns, allowing plenty of working time and individualized instruction.

"Catching the Light"
October 7-9, 2021

As a landscape painter, I often say “It’s all about the light”. Do your paintings sometimes look dull and lack the spark, glow, or mood that you wish to convey? Working in pastel or oil, students will learn how to see and analyze the quality of the light that is so important. Whether it be desert high noon, the rich colors at twilight or a misty autumn morning, light keys carry the mood. Learn how to simplify and organize shapes through value patterns. Learn how edges play a role in conveying atmosphere and how color choices help carry the mood. Through demonstration, exercises, and much individual-at-easel attention, we will explore how to best express an overall concept.

"Expressive Portraits From Life and Photos"
October 11-14, 2021

Every professional artist says, “Work from life!” But sometimes we have no choice. Unfortunately, photos lie to us. There are four elements to realistic painting: shape (drawing), value, color, and edges; the problem is that even in the best of photo references three of the four are always wrong! So, we become very adept at copying wrong information…and it shows in our paintings! While there is no substitute for plenty of life-work, in this workshop you will learn how to spot the errors in the photo reference, and more importantly, compensate for them. William will demonstrate in both oil and pastel - a complete head study as well as several “mini-demos” (painting eyes, mouth, etc).

"Painting Autumn & Winter Landscapes"
November 2-4, 2021

Barbara will cover composition, value structure, color temperature, and handling of edges and mark-making, but she’ll slant things toward the unique characteristics of autumn and winter. For either season, she’ll discuss particularly how to capture the spectacular effects that 'grab us' when looking at these landscapes from life, and how to translate those effects from a reference photo so that we can paint what’s beautiful about these seasons instead of copying a compromised photo. All information presented will apply equally to oil and pastel. The first will include lots of demonstration time. The remaining two days will include a full demo, with oil on one day and pastel on the other. Students will paint each afternoon, with plenty of instructor help.

Living in the desert Southwest, the sky is so much a part of our lives. In Arizona we are treated to some of the most amazing sunsets on the planet. The delicate glazing of pastels is the perfect medium to create the vibration of color to portray all of that drama. In this workshop we will explore the effects of light and atmosphere that create our spectacular sunsets and how to express that with our chosen medium of pastel. Now is the time to break out and use the wildest colors hiding in the back of your box! Kathy will demo and provide short lessons each day. "Beginning Oil Pastel"
November 20, 2021

Oil pastels are probably the most misunderstood and underappreciated medium there is. When you say “oil pastels” to most artists they think “crayons” because their first exposure to them is with a student grade version. Misconceptions and bad first experiences abound. The truth is oil pastels are dynamic, vivid, versatile and extremely forgiving. They will expand your range of artistic expression. The medium is geared for those who love to work with their hands. You mush, squash, push and blend with your fingertips. You apply, texture, carve, scrape and cut away with your palette knife. This workshop will teach you three basic techniques for creating everything from lush landscapes to eye-popping abstracts.

"Paint Small to Learn Large"
Thursdays, December 2-16, 2021

Edouard Manet painted many exquisite large masterpieces, but none of his paintings were as exciting as his “last flowers”… his small florals. In this class we will paint small, being careful to understand the concepts of shape, value, color and of course composition. Students may do one painting in a session or perhaps several, painting carefully but not meticulously. The goal is that by the end of class the student will have a greater understanding of the concepts of painting. As a bonus the student may leave with gifts – paintings - to give family members or friends for the holiday. Students will work from simple set-ups or from photographs in oil or pastel.

"Interpreting Your Photographic Reference"
Saturdays, December 4-18, 2021

Painters often use photographic references when creating works of art. During this three-session class, students will paint the subject of their choice using their photographic reference. The painter must understand that photography often misrepresents the true relationships of value, color and perspective. With guidance, the student will learn to consider the photographic reference as raw material, to be interpreted rather than slavishly copied. Let’s make “art” from photographic reference! This class is open to all levels of experience and all mediums! Please bring several photos of interest to each class. *Students may also choose to paint still-life arrangements.

"Sunlight and Value"
December 13-15, 2021

Pastel is pure pigment, with rich, jewel-like color unattainable with any other media. This workshop is an in-depth exploration of the pastel medium. Learn the ins and outs under the tutelage of an experienced painter and teacher, in an engaging, informative, and fun workshop. Prepare to get your hands dirty! In addition to materials, students will be expected to bring their own references to work from, preferably landscape, as this is Christine’s area of expertise, particularly in rendering light effects. All levels of students are welcome, from beginners to advanced. Participants will be expected to have a working knowledge of drawing. More advanced pastel painters will be encouraged to stretch, develop and grow in their style of painting.

"Painting The Poetic Landscape"
January 21-23, 2022

Once you learn the mechanics of painting the landscape, it’s time to learn how to add the magic…the poetry. We’ll examine the difference between paintings that merely contain elements of the landscape, and those that convey a distinct visual message… and how to gain the skills necessary to accomplish this. We’ll cover some methods that will help you develop a strong composition and edit unnecessary details that detract from the emotion you want to convey. Each day will begin with a demonstration followed by students working on a specific painting exercise. Instructor demos will include both oil and pastel. This workshop is open to all levels, although artists with at least some basic landscape painting experience will benefit most.
