"Beginning Oil Pastel"
December 12, 2020

Oil pastels are dynamic, vivid, versatile and extremely forgiving. - Standard oil and acrylic paint could only wish for the versatility of oil pastels. - They will expand your range of artistic expression. The medium is geared for those who love to work with their hands. You mush, squash, push and blend with your fingertips. You apply, texture, carve, scrape and cut away with your palette knife. This workshop will teach you three basic techniques for creating everything from lush landscapes to eye-popping abstracts. By the end of the course, you may even drop oil and acrylic paints altogether and join the growing number of converts to this wonderful medium.

"Alla Prima: Painting the Portrait and Figure from Life"
March 22-26, 2021

This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, fun, informative, yet intense working environment. Romel will demonstrate every morning his approach to painting the portrait and figure from life, using Alla Prima (a style of painting where, instead of building colors up with layers or glazing over an underpainting, the painting is completed while the paint is still wet) with the emphasis on improving color, drawing skills, value relationships, edges, and capturing the “feeling” of light. Learn to use the elements that make a painting stronger and exciting: creative use of color and edges, visual movement, paint application, brush handling, distribution of abstract shapes and strong design. Romel will also explain how to set up the model and lighting.

Fabulous when you don’t have time to paint or clean up but want to get some time in the studio. They don’t require a huge investment; in fact, you can build a pastel with the three primaries which we will be covering in class.

"Interpreting Your Photographic Reference"
May 11-12, 2021

Painters often use photographic references when creating works of art. During this two-day class, students will paint the subject of their choice using their photographic reference. The painter must understand that photography often misrepresents the true relationships of the value, color and perspective. With guidance, the student will learn to consider the photographic reference as raw material, to be interpreted rather than slavishly copied. Let’s make “art” from photographic reference! This class is open to all levels of experience and all mediums! Please bring several photos of interest to each class. Students may choose to paint still life arrangements.
