"Beginning Oil Pastel"
July 29, 2022

Oil pastels are probably the most misunderstood and underappreciated medium there is. The truth is: Oil pastels are dynamic, vivid, versatile, and extremely forgiving. They will expand your range of artistic expression. The medium is geared for those who love to work with their hands. You mush, squash, push and blend with your fingertips as well as apply texture, carve, scrape and cut away with a palette knife. This workshop teaches three basic techniques for creating everything from photo realistic portraits to lush landscapes to eye popping abstracts, but the focus is on landscapes. By the end of the day, you may even drop oil or acrylic paints altogether and join the growing number of converts to this wonderful medium.

"Using Abstract Thinking to Create Illustrative Paintings"
August 23-25, 2022

Aline is known for her vivid paintings and creative use of color. Working from their own photo references, students will transform these into pastel or oil paintings using the principles of color and design. Aline will emphasize the understanding of color in terms of temperature, intensity, and value while translating those ideas using pastel or oil techniques. Experimenting with exciting different colors while maintaining the value and intensity will serve as a great exercise in helping students expand their color sensitivity. Ten stroke exercises are fun to develop confidence in both decision-making and interesting strokes. Let’s say goodbye to overworked tight pastels and oils and learn to create loose, bold but still illustrative paintings.

"Oil Pastels"
November 4-5, 2022

Oil pastels have a soft, buttery feel and are fun to work with. The color effects and textures that can be achieved are stunningly beautiful. Learn to prepare the substrate and under painting, to blend pastels for three-dimensional effects, and to layer with Holbein and Sennelier oil pastels. Scrape away oil pastel to reveal previous layers. Add oil pastel to build up the painting surface and color quality. We’ll cover use of line and mark making, color theory as it relates to layering with oil pastels, and composition, negative and positive space, shapes, and the placement of objects. Learn the dialog of self-critique and how to unleash your imagination. Must have some art experience.

We will be painting on-site at the Santa Barbara wharf and along the coastal waterway (beaches) with emphasis on capturing the light and water-in-motion in pastels. I will do daily live demos at each location and assist everyone at their easels as you paint from the same subjects. Boats, buildings and people along the wharf area, set against the distant atmosphere over the Pacific will play into your paintings. On one of the days we will paint the famous courthouse buildings and gardens in spring color, as well. Emphasis on all will be learning to “see like a painter” and utilizing small sketches (thumbnails) that you produce, to get the values and design patterns before you paint!
