"Critique Group: Open to All Artists"
May 1, 2020

We all need feedback. As artists, we also need a second (or third) “set of eyes” on our work. We need to know how our work can be improved. We need to understand how our work is perceived by our audience – the viewer. Sometimes we can spot issues on our own, but most times we need input from others. This is where critique becomes an important part of our development as artists. Open to artists of all backgrounds and media. Moderated by PenArt’s Director of Education Elysia Michaelsen, artists reserve a 30-minute block to show and discuss your work, or just come and share your viewpoints and learn from others. Discussion formats will range from open group conversation to written critiques.

"Using Abstract Thinking to Create Illustrative Paintings"
May 19-21, 2020

Painting is learning to see. Often, we paint what we think we see because we all have preconceived notions of what something looks like. However, to really paint what you see, you must break down everything you are looking at into just abstract shapes. Aline is known for her vivid paintings and creative use of color. Working from their own photo references, students will transform these into pastel or oil paintings using the principles of color and design. Along with daily painting demonstrations, Aline will emphasize experimenting with different colors and interesting strokes. Let’s say goodbye to overworked tight pastels and oils and learn to create loose, bold but still illustrative paintings. Aline gives personal attention throughout the workshop.

"Drawing to Mixed Media – On Site to Studio"
September 14-23, 2020

Drawing on location or “en plein air,” is a sensory experience that allows us to absorb the multi-layered aspects of a site: the temperature, sounds, warmth of the sun or cool of the shadows. Back in the studio we will work on Arches Oil paper with dry media – graphite, pastel, graphix chunks, charcoal and other materials provided for our experimentations. We will layer with thin veils of cold wax medium, fixing the dry medium and permitting additional embellishments with oil pastel. Our Day Trips will inspire us to see the region through the eyes of artists who have come before us, who all found the light, textures and temperature of this region to be the muse for their creative work.
