"Plein Air Painting: Red Rocks"
August 13-17, 2018

Explore Denver and paint the Red Rocks with Kim English! Red Rocks are a part of a geological fault that runs along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains for many miles. The rocks have been tilted up and worn away to reveal what we see today. These unique formations, along with strong lights and shadows, create an inviting space for Plein Air Painters. Students will learn how to interpret color and the play of light in plein air painting. The importance of composition, values, color relationships and atmospheric perspective will also be discussed. Towards the end of the week, there will be a review of the work that was created during the workshop. Portable equipment and transportation required.

"Magical Oil Portraits"
September 28, 2018

The method I teach is classified as "alla prima" or “wet on wet”. We will use reference photos of portraits, prepare substrate, and create overall strokes to plan the face and fill in details in a manner that captures the essence of the face. Though we will use our intuition, this is more of a technical class where we observe deeply, measure accurately, and apply strokes of paint that are true to the colors and values of our subjects. We will discuss concepts of realism, while aiming for magical realism, where we look within to make adjustments to the paint that we transfer from our brushes to our substrates, to make real, the vision of what we are painting.

"Mastering Abstract Composition: Structures and Strategies"
September 28-30, 2018

If you look at enough abstract art, you will begin to see a repetition of certain structures, or “strategies of arrangement”. Each morning of this three-day workshop, I will introduce two new structures. We will begin simply and get more complex as the workshop progresses, looking at Balance and Value, Shape and Size, Color and Line. Collage is a great medium to easily test new ideas, find delicious surprises, and rehearse combinations. Through critique and individual instruction, we will learn ways to address problems in your design. Things like: how to connect disparate areas to one another, how to add interest and energy, how to simplify, and how to clarify and unify your design.
