"City and Urbanscapes 2-Day Intensive"
October 14-15, 2023

Architecture can appear overwhelming, but by training our eye to see past detail, we can convey buildings in paint very powerfully. In this class students will strengthen their perceptual acuity with regards to seeing buildings and structures more confidently and clearly: simplifying, conveying details, edge variety, sighting angles. We will begin by completing smaller and faster studies, while working in either grayscale or a limited palette. These small studies will teach us how to see complex information simple, and clearly. Day two we will begin longer session paintings, using a full palette and slowly begin adding details, learning how to sight angles, assess perspective issues simply, and vary our edges and marks to create more nuance paintings.

"Thinking Visually in the Key of Play"
November 3-5, 2023

When we arrive at a difficult place in the studio, are we comfortable being outside the comfort zone and then, where do we turn to make decisions about what’s next? Are we willing to risk diving deep into an instinctual response with no care for right or wrong? And how do we construct the confidence to risk acting intuitively? Play requires relearning how to forget all the regimentation, rules, techniques that we’ve been ‘taught’, and getting totally lost is the primary way forward to the pace where illumination can occur if we get out of our own way. This class is devoted to developing, toughening, and honing your visual confidence, and not to making pretty pictures that galleries might want.

Acrylic paint pouring involves a bit of chemistry, as ratios and fluidity have a direct impact on the end result. Heavier paints sink as lighter ones come to the surface creating beautiful cells. It’s also an exciting and fun technique because you don’t know what the finished product will look like! Sandy West carries a BFA in Commercial Art, which has allowed her to play with an expansive array of mediums. However, her innate style of illustration glimmers in all of her pieces. She is a long-time resident of the Florida Keys and has been sharing her love of art with others as an instructor at several venues, and as an artist through her own works depicting the tropical surroundings.

"Painting the Dramatic Interior"
December 9-10, 2023

Patrick Lee takes a unique creative approach to making paintings in the studio and en plein air. He draws heavily on intuition and imagination to develop an image, often altering the drawing, color, and spatial relationships to create a mood and express a feeling about the subject. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. This gives the viewer an opportunity to connect with each piece in their own way, inviting them to let their own imaginations make personal associations and connections. This two-day workshop focuses on painting interiors from photographic and memory references, as well as establishing a mood through lighting, color, and composition.

"Intuitive Painting"
December 10, 2023

A supportive environment and thoughtful instruction will allow you to focus on your intuitive, creative spirit in an approach to painting that is enjoyable and non-judgmental. Class activities include action painting, automatic drawing, blind contour drawing, fast sketches, group art games, painting to music, self-portraits, etc. We’ll experiment with all kinds of mediums — paints, pencils, pastels, mono-type printing, crayons and collage, and whatever else we think of. No experience necessary. The only requirement is curiosity and a desire to explore your creative spirit. Lucy is an internationally recognized mixed media artist who paints intuitively. Her work has been featured in galleries and shows throughout the U.S. as well as in Europe, and her paintings are in private collections around the world.

"Life Model Drawing"
December 11, 2023

Life Drawing, also known as Figure Drawing, is the practice of drawing in order to study the human figure. If you look at historic artwork, you'll find many nude drawings and paintings. These are considered life drawings. Many artists perceive figure drawing as an endless effort with limitless possibility for improvement, learning, and diversity. The range of detail in a life drawing can vary immensely. They can range from highly detailed and anatomically proportional drawings to loose and expressive sketches to gesture drawings, which show the simple form, action and pose. Some popular mediums used during life drawings are charcoal, graphite, pen, ink and pastels. For the longer poses, some may use painting mediums like acrylics or oil.

"Capturing Radiant Light in Your Paintings in Oil or Acrylic"
April 11-14, 2024

Master your ability to capture radiance in your paintings and join South Carolina artist Michael Story for this four-day landscape painting workshop. Michael will explain and demonstrate the fundamentals of building radiant color by applying complementary and analogous color combinations. Use effective underpainting and layering of color in trees, grasses, sky, and water to create interest and authenticity in our subject matter. Students begin their paintings with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image. You’ll begin blocking in your painting, then progressing dark to light to completion. Building final layers of color and avoiding muddy mixtures, you’ll achieve fresh, bright, radiant color while capturing depth and drama to your work. Visit michaelstory.com.
