"Palette Knife Landscape Painting: Lose the Brush!"
July 16-17, 2020
 

Embrace the freedom that comes from decisive, impasto knife application. Work wet-into-wet in either oil or acrylic (oil is preferred). Students will plan, design, sketch and complete two or more compositions. This class will focus on the reinforcement of traditional fundamentals including color theory, values, temperature management, large masses, focal point emphasis, simplification of detail and soft edges…all with a palette knife! No brushes allowed. Learn to identify and solve “problems” ahead of time to ensure beautiful results. This is a fun, relaxed atmosphere that will push even the most advanced artists out of their comfort zones and open a new door to expressionism. Students may use their own landscape, cityscape or seascape photographs or use some provided by the instructor.

"Experimental Collage"

This action packed class will expand your concept of collage. You will begin with a process I call Scribble to Structure. This is a mixed media process on paper that will loosen up your creative muscles. You will be working with pencils, paints, pastels and paper. You will learn some unusual ways to move the paint. Color combinations and composition skills will be explored. This is one of my favorite ways to begin a creative journey. On day two you expand your vocabulary with new materials for collage including fabrics and transparent papers you will create. You will learn how to make your collages look like Encaustic if you wish, and how to get crackles to stay on papers too.

"Mastering Skies & Reflections in Oil, Acrylic or Pastel"

You’’ll begin your painting with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image. "A New Spin on Mixed Media"

This is a workshop for the experienced acrylic painter as well as the beginner! Squirting fluid acrylics onto a surface and spreading it with a credit card produces beautiful streaks of color! Karen has experimented with this so much that she has many no fail color formulas to get you off to a great start. Subjects are students' choice, but Karen will be demonstrating contemporary figures and animals. Students will get to doodle to their heart’s content in this workshop. Good design will be emphasized and lots of tricks to make the detail work easier. Students will have no trouble with the drawing, etc. because Karen has some easy tips. We will also be working with several different types of metallic special effects and will be studying Gustav Klimt’s as well as Van Gogh’s paintings!

What does it mean to work in an abstract manner? How does it feel? What does it look like? Amanda will help you find your unique way of translating your gestures into an abstract composition. Using traditional art principles, you will take risks and make informed decisions on the canvas, both in the workshop and long after. We will focus on composition, value, and color, but more importantly, your intuitions will guide the painting to completion. "Abstract Landscape Painting"

How can you capture that energy and express those fleeting feelings of exhilaration, nostalgia, or serenity on canvas? Amanda will help you transform your reference imagery into rich, energetic, abstract paintings. She will teach the traditional rules of landscape painting and encourage you to break the rules. We will build unconventional color palettes and create marks and brushstrokes that will surprise ourselves. Come explore abstraction, color and mark-making through the lens of landscape painting. Artists will complete several mini-series of paintings on paper and 5-6 larger paintings on canvas over the course of this workshop.

Sherry Egger has a background in graphic art and has experience in a variety of mediums. Her work has been featured in The Colored Pencil Magazine and she was selected to do a technique demonstration article for this magazine in 2015. A popular instructor, she is comfortable with many different artistic mediums and her classes consist of not only pencilists but also those who paint in oil and acrylic. Her emphasis on fundamentals, values, and strong contrast bring both beginning artists as well as those who have been painting for years. Creativity is her strong suit and she is constantly experimenting with new techniques, new concepts and different mediums. Sherry instructs weekly classes at Anderson Gallery’s - Artist's Annex.
