Art Workshops, Classes & Retreats

"Interpreting Your Photographic Reference"
Saturdays, December 4-18, 2021

Painters often use photographic references when creating works of art. During this three-session class, students will paint the subject of their choice using their photographic reference. The painter must understand that photography often misrepresents the true relationships of value, color and perspective. With guidance, the student will learn to consider the photographic reference as raw material, to be interpreted rather than slavishly copied. Let’s make “art” from photographic reference! This class is open to all levels of experience and all mediums! Please bring several photos of interest to each class. *Students may also choose to paint still-life arrangements.

There are so many pretty winter birds to paint: festive red cardinals with holly or a chickadee with red berries and snow falling. Come see what you can create! Krista will start the day with an inspirational demo, and the rest of the time will be left to the students to paint their own winter bird paintings. Learn the secret of making bird paintings that come to life!

"Principles of Painting"
January 3-6, 2022

This workshop is an intense four days of inspiration, hard work and productive learning. The main principles Moore covers are design, color, composition, and edges. Beginning with slide lectures in the morning, he isolates each element with the help of computer technology and focuses on a different principle each day. Lectures are followed by painting exercises and/or demonstrations of the principles being taught. Students are encouraged to apply lessons to subject matter of their choice, whether landscapes, still life, or figure. Exercises are geared toward learning the principles, not toward producing a finished painting. Demos will be in oil.

"Draw or Paint the Figurative Subject"
Saturdays, January 8 - February 12, 2022

Students may choose to draw or paint the model from life. Portrait, nude and costumed models will be posed in a supportive context. Two weeks of portrait study will be followed by two weeks of working with the figure model. During the final two weeks, we will paint the costumed model. When drawing we focus on shape, edge and value relationships. These areas of study are fundamental to the successful interpretation of the figurative subject. Painters will focus on those elements as well as color relationships. The color and strength of the light source must be understood by the artist working in color. Daily demonstrations, lecture and individualized help will be offered. All levels of experience and all mediums are welcome.

Beginners: Better to simplify and edit the landscape leaving out unnecessary elements. Seasoned: Capture a more pleasing rendition of what you see by translating the landscape into poetry. Understand the value of a quick study and create a light/dark value pattern in case the weather changes mid-way. Richichi will conduct a short demo each class to show how to bring the feeling of the outdoors inside and use green more successfully.

"Beyond Description: Expressive Painting through Image Structure"
February 14-18, 2022

Your growth as an artist is my priority as we study great artists and unlock the universal secrets of image structure. At a primal level, it’s this abstract image structure that moves us-- the use of line, shape, space, value, color, and texture. This applies to any style or genre of painting because every good painting is good due to the underlying abstraction--the power of the purely visual. Helping other artists exceed their own expectations is one of the most enjoyable things I ever get to do. The plan is always to help you reach your potential, painting your way, with your voice and vision, but better than ever before. Paint representational or abstract. Oils, watercolors, collage, and acrylics welcome.

"Painting Water and Beaches"
March 17-18, 2022

Every object in a landscape painting involves the use of perspective which means buildings, roads, trees, people, boats, paths…well you get the drift. It is simple to learn and your paintings will be easier and improve drastically. Learn how Joseph chooses subjects, organizes and edits his ideas to get the most dynamic, expressive paintings. Learn to be bold and confident using a fully loaded larger brush. He will share generously his knowledge of painting in each class with demonstrations and feedback. Remember Joseph chooses poetry over exactness, so be bold. He will supply photo references and students are welcome to bring their own. This is an easy going, casual workshop for all levels of painters. He believes in patience, good humor, and boundless encouragement.

"Paint, Paper, Paste: Mixed Media"
March 17, 2022

Busy yet satisfying abstract exercise. On two different weights of paper we’ll experiment using modeling paste with stencils - scratching into it, masking areas with tape, applying a strong color with tissue paper - layering on and covering up with acrylics and pondering composition. We’ll focus on a limited complimentary palette with lots of values, some created by adding newspaper and see where the practice takes us.
