"Critique Group: Open to All Artists"
April 3, 2020

We all need feedback. As artists, we also need a second (or third) “set of eyes” on our work. We need to know how our work can be improved. This is where critique becomes an important part of our development as artists. Open to artists of all backgrounds and media. Moderated by PenArt’s Director of Education Elysia Michaelsen, artists reserve a 30-minute block to show and discuss your work, or just come and share your viewpoints and learn from others. Discussion formats will range from open group conversation to written critiques.

"Alternative Artmaking"
May 23-24, 2020

This is a class created for artists with a mind for experimenting with materials and having those materials help direct their artistic explorations. It is for all ages as it requires imagination and unconventional thinking more than skill. The majority of art work we encounter in the world reflects a division between media and subject, where the media is used to create the illusion of something. In our quest for representation and illusion, we often miss the potential of various media to exercise wonderful internal qualities. Like swimming with the current, it’s also often easier to use the natural qualities of a material to locate composition than to bend it against its will.

We will begin drawing from direct observation, composing quick sketches to simplify the landscape. We will discuss perspective, scale shifts, light source, value and space – all integral concepts to composing a compelling drawing. Paintings will be made later in the day, working from the same location. The light will change but the overall composition will remain. Classroom discussions will focus on other landscape painters who use a variety of ideas around color and abstraction in their work.

"Contemporary Portraiture"
June 24-27, 2020

Portraits are one of the most intimidating subjects to paint. Creating a simplified process not only helps you to paint with confidence, but also gives you the freedom to explore a more contemporary approach that is entirely your own. By investigating a range of styles that are prevalent in portraiture, such as impressionistic, naturalistic, and realistic, this workshop unpacks what makes a successful portrait. This workshop begins with a series of demonstrations and guided explorations. Working from a live model each day, emphasis is placed on exploring various media, such as oils, acrylics, colored pencils, and markers, to expand your own unique artistic expression of what contemporary portraiture means to you. "Painting: Interiors / Exteriors with the Figure"
June 28 - July 2, 2020

In this workshop, we will weave the figure into the fabric of the painting. We will use color to structure space and establish atmosphere, both interior and exterior. Into this light condition we will integrate the Figure. We will work with the model in-doors with windows, and out-doors in a nearby garden. Our processes will combine drawing and painting from direct observation, and working in the studio from our studies done from life. We will create specific light with color, painting to painting, and within one work. We will ask, what happens when exterior and interior light meet? On what part of the painting do we wish to focus?

"The Texture Guidebook"
August 1, 2020

Over the past two decades of writing art technique books, I have found that many artists stick with what they know works. In order to grow and experience more adventure in painting even advanced painters need to push themselves to discover new techniques. Learning a lot of acrylic texture techniques in one day can be a challenge, but when you learn the techniques by creating a book you will have an instant referral at your fingertips. Another win is that there is no pressure to make a finished composition. It is fun to layer some pastes and gels, add collage or stencil, fuse some pieces together and learn how to alter the surface so you can draw or write onto your pages.

August 17-20, 2020

Painting from a live model is an effective way to improve skills in painting any subject matter. In this workshop you will receive instruction on drawing, design, proper value and color use, and edge control. To benefit most from this class an artist should have some drawing skills and a working knowledge of the medium they are using. The workshop will consist of power point presentations, lectures, demos, and every student will get individual instruction at their easel. While most of the demos/instruction are geared for oil painters, acrylic artists, familiar with their medium, will also benefit and are welcome. A full color booklet of class notes is included.

"Paint + Image: Experimental Media"

Existing on multiple levels, images cross geography, politics, memory, and physical space itself. In this workshop, build your knowledge of acrylic paint and alternative processes through the framework of understanding image, its functions, and utility. Beginning with a facilitated discussion about the properties of acrylic paint, review basic material usage by building color and/or value relationships. Demonstrations and discussions address acrylic paint’s wide range of applications and its ability to adapt and transform, while hands-on exploration investigates various alternative painting techniques, image transfer processes, and approaches for combining new materials with acrylics effectively. Lydia provides step-by-step guidance and individualized feedback each day.
