"Still Life Painting: Abstraction w/ Objects"
October 7-8, 2023

Explore still life as a vehicle for understanding abstract ideas about composition, color and value. Discover how the still life genre can be perfect for experimenting with formal and technical painting fundamentals. Emphasis will be placed on ways objects can be arranged to maximize unexpected abstract relationships over their specific descriptive qualities. Students will be encouraged to further develop their own individual use of materials, mark-making and color palette throughout the painting process. The importance of balancing intuition and critical analysis will also be discussed. Each student will arrange their own still life and paint directly from life. It is strongly suggested that participants bring some of their own objects, draperies, etc. to make the process more personally engaging and meaningful.

"Not So Still, Still-Life"
December 4-5, 2023

Michelle is offering a call to action for artists to move away from traditional depictions of still life and create more dynamic and lively compositions. It could also refer to the idea that even though the objects in a still life painting are not moving, they still have the potential to convey movement and energy through the use of color, texture, brushwork and composition. Essentially, this phrase could be seen as a reminder to explore new and unconventional ways of depicting the way light and shadow affect still life subjects.
