In this workshop, the core elements of successful oil painting will be explored. Drawing on lessons from his recently published book Oil Painting Essentials, Gregg Kreutz will teach and demonstrate the key factors in getting paintings to come to life. Factors such as how to create drama, how to create depth, how to make the paint dynamic, how to give vibrancy to the light, and other critical issues will be taught through portrait, figure, and still life painting. Kreutz, a celebrated painter and teacher at New York’s Art Students League, believes that a hands-on familiarity with different genres helps painters gain proficiency with whatever subject they choose to paint. "Fundamentals of Landscape Painting"
Tuesdays, February 1-15, 2022

The most important steps in representational landscape painting are the first steps: the compositional design and block in! This workshop will focus on designing a good composition and nailing the values from the start, starting with a solid value plan with large simple shapes and working through the painting process to whatever level of ‘finish’ is desired. The finishing touches or amount of detail is a matter of personal taste, but the ‘start’ is key to any successful painting. Additionally, perspective as it relates to the landscape, mixing quick clean color, what’s needed when going outdoors to paint and lots more will be covered in three short days. Be ready to work, learn and have fun doing it!

Two of the most important aspects to plein air painting are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. Students will focus on developing a sense of design and rhythm. While staying at the Tubac Golf Resort, a restored 1800’s ranch, students will be near the Santa Rita Mountains on the Santa Cruz River. The historic village of Tubac provides old adobe buildings and street scenes to paint. Nearby, students will paint the beautiful Spanish Church built in 1828 at the Tumacacori Mission. There will also be slide shows in the evenings, group critiques and dinners, and sunrise painting for early risers!

"Portraits in the Garden with Models - Pastel or Oil"
Fridays, February 25 & March 4, 2022

Portrait painting can be an artistic challenge. Working with models, Nancy Goff will be teaching students the basic rules of seeing: going for the big picture; subject relationships; and dividing the work into light, halftone and shadow. The course will benefit both pastel artists and oil painters. Why Pastel? Pastel can produce both solid and forceful effects. It’s versatile and as permanent as oil, immediate, and it has the advantage of being both a drawing and painting medium. It can also be satisfying, flexible and fun. Why Oil? Oil paint works hand-in-hand with pastel in that the painting is built the same way. Goff enjoys switching between the two mediums, and students will learn more about both while improving their technical skills.

"Plein Air with Mark Boedges"
February 28 - March 4, 2022

“Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time everything else in my painting flows from this.” – Mark Boedges. This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow. "Figurative Painting (Week #2)"
April 11-15, 2022

Milt Kobayashi will take students through the arc of an oil painting, dealing with the problems that will arise, embracing alternative solutions, and exploring tangential ideas as they present themselves. His morning demos will focus on design and composition as a means of pushing an idea. He will talk about values and the effect light has on form. By mid-week, he will be taking students through his process of painting. The workshop will be a practical demonstration of problem-solving and hopefully enable the students to embrace their creative nature and break free from linear thinking. Students enrolled in both of Milt’s workshops will receive a tuition discount. Tuition for both weeks is $1,370 (a $200 savings!)

"The Figure and Color"
April 13-16, 2022

The workshop will focus on an analytical and emotive approach to painting the human figure with an emphasis on color and value relationships. The development of form through an observation and interpretation of plane shifts projecting and receding from the eye will be stressed. Aspects of anatomy, proportion and movement will be discussed along with the development of an Alla Prima technique, which involves both scumbling and glazing. Steven will guide you with techniques for dealing with the changes that occur as a model poses, learning to hold and interpret what you see with a selective eye. Each day will consist of lectures, demos and one-on-one critiques. Students will benefit from Steven’s representational style and extensive knowledge of the human figure.

"Fundamentals of Painting"
April 16, 2022

The fundamentals of painting can be boiled down to two concepts: 1) Learning to see as an artist and by extension making marks that represent what we see and feel. 2) Learning to control the medium, everything from selecting your art materials to setting up your palette, to mixing color, to the application of brush marks. All of this is about staying in control. In this workshop Paul will demonstrate fun techniques to help the student see like an artist as well as fun exercises the student can practice that help them stay in control of the painting, allowing an artist to find their individual artistic voice. These techniques are also valuable in breaking the ‘block’ many artists experience.

"Landscape Painting: Beyond the Photo"
June 6-10, 2022

Among representational artists, there has been an endless battle between those who paint from life and those who use photographic references. However, it’s a misguided argument: the source of the visual information we use to paint is irrelevant. The real issue lies not in painting from life or photos, but whether we’re simply copying what we see as opposed to using the information as a springboard for creating the paintings we want. In this workshop, participants will work from photographic references of the landscape to learn to break down the information, analyze it, and use it to generate tonal sketches, change color palettes, and create paintings based on multiple images, memory, and imagination. Lectures, demonstrations and one-on-one painting instruction each day.

"Plein Air Painting in Beartooth, Montana"
June 13-17, 2022

Landscape painting is mostly about learning how to see; how to interpret, compare and edit the shapes and colors of the scene we choose to paint. In other words, to not see literally the mountains, trees, grass, water, etc. but to see them as an interesting and beautiful arrangement of shapes and colors. This opens up a whole lot more possibilities for things to paint and also helps us find our own voice. Students will concentrate on the process of painting and not be so concerned with doing “finished” paintings. Students will work on what makes a plein air painting work; the mood, rhythm and movement along with an interesting and compelling arrangement of values, masses and color.

"Using Abstract Thinking to Create Illustrative Paintings"
August 23-25, 2022

Aline is known for her vivid paintings and creative use of color. Working from their own photo references, students will transform these into pastel or oil paintings using the principles of color and design. Aline will emphasize the understanding of color in terms of temperature, intensity, and value while translating those ideas using pastel or oil techniques. Experimenting with exciting different colors while maintaining the value and intensity will serve as a great exercise in helping students expand their color sensitivity. Ten stroke exercises are fun to develop confidence in both decision-making and interesting strokes. Let’s say goodbye to overworked tight pastels and oils and learn to create loose, bold but still illustrative paintings.

August 27-28, 2022

Come and explore a new medium! In this class, you will learn about building multiple layers with cold wax and oil paints. The wax and paint will be brushed, smeared, and spread into a pleasing composition of layered, translucent color. Once the layers are built, you can work back into them, making marks and patterns. When layering paint, understanding color theory is very important, particularly with translucent paint. You will spend some time mixing colors and see how far you can “push” the paint colors that are provided. The end result of this time spent emerged in wax and paint will be several abstract paintings.
