"Study with a Master Series: Drawings & Painting the Portrait"
July 9-11, 2020

This class will stress the learning process to achieve this goal; from basic proportions, structure and value relationships for the beginner, intermediate and advanced students may choose to work in color, but would encourage one to take at least first day or two of drawing and then to full color portraits with emphasis on enhancing values, color and design. We will do some value studies of a generic eye, nose, mouth and ear for a better understanding of their structure. We will talk about the process of learning to see, not to copy, but how to interpret. Good design is related to good drawing, and to me good drawing enhances good judgment and good taste.

"Painting Depth and Distance in Oil Landscapes"
July 14-15, 2020

Landscape painters love to create and develop a sense of space and distance in a painting – that sense of movement receding back into deep space. Trees, rocks, and cactus may need to be pulled forward for greater emphasis or pushed back into the distant areas. Color strategies will be demonstrated by mixing cooler neutralized color passages to achieve this visual effect. In addition, the painting’s structure will be based on a strong foundation of light and dark values. Students will learn how to use scale, volume, overlap, and perspective. All this will be pulled together to unify the painting for a strong finish. Included are discussions, demonstrations, visual displays, and personalized instruction. Students should bring their own photographs for reference.

"Oil Portraits with Zorn + King's Blue"
July 24 & 25, 2020

The Zorn palette is created by mixing colors from four tubes of paint: Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cad Red, and Ivory Black (attributed to Swedish painter, Anders Zorn circa 1860-1920) who created a body of work using mixes from these four paints, with the addition of an occasional bonus color. We will use the Zorn palette to create portraits and introduce King's Blue as an optional bonus color to finish the painting. The method I teach is classified as "alla prima" or (wet on wet), also known as "direct painting". Learn to prepare substrate, create overall strokes to plan the face and fill in details that captures the essence, and not just the likeness.

"Painting The Figure With Expression"
September 23-26, 2020

In this class we’ll focus on figurative painting from a live model and photos. We’ll explore techniques for creating colorful, abstract patterns with a sense of movement and energy by first making a quick underpainting in acrylic, then painting into it with oil paint. For photo reference, I encourage using images with energy and motion in them, i.e. athletes, boxers, dancers, etc. Large brushes and a plastic scraper will be used to apply paint generously and to also scrape away to reveal the underlying acrylic underpainting. I’ll also be talking about edges and how blurring the line between main subject and background helps in creating an abstract pattern of forms, color and dynamism.
