"Painting The Figure With Expression"
September 23-26, 2020

In this class we’ll focus on figurative painting from a live model and photos. We’ll explore techniques for creating colorful, abstract patterns with a sense of movement and energy by first making a quick underpainting in acrylic, then painting into it with oil paint. For photo reference, I encourage using images with energy and motion in them, i.e. athletes, boxers, dancers, etc. Large brushes and a plastic scraper will be used to apply paint generously and to also scrape away to reveal the underlying acrylic underpainting. I’ll also be talking about edges and how blurring the line between main subject and background helps in creating an abstract pattern of forms, color and dynamism.

October 5-8, 2020

While there is no substitute for plenty of life-work, in this workshop you will learn how to spot the errors in the photo reference, and more importantly, compensate for them. A second goal will be to loosen up! Most artists admire the expressive, suggestive brushwork of master painters, but don’t understand how to achieve those effects. In most cases it’s not what they put in, but rather what they chose to leave out. This four-day workshop is for artists who are advanced beginners or higher. (An advanced beginner has reasonably accurate drawing skills and painting experience). William will demonstrate in both oil and pastel (a complete head study as well as several “mini-demos” – painting eyes, painting the mouth, etc.

"Still Life Painting as Fine Art"
November 2-6, 2020

Painting still life has long been a way to learn the fundamentals of painting as it is perhaps the most convenient way to study values, color relationships, form and drawing. Kelli strives to reach the beginner by breaking down artistic language into clear terms that are easily understood. Her experience with still life painting also reaches students who have a grasp on the fundamentals, but are looking for ways to take their still life to a higher level of art. Conundrums like what goes together, what to do with the background, how to not overwork the painting and how to set up a still life that tells a story with impact will be solved. Daily demonstrations, critiques and discussions.

"Likeness through Abstraction"
November 2-5, 2020

By making large shapes progressively smaller, students will begin placing simplified versions of the features until they have a fully developed portrait. The color palette will remain limited and students will see how to achieve many different “flesh” colors with very few colors on the palette.

"Painting from the Inside"
November 2-5, 2020

This workshop will focus on interior “landscapes.” Working from interesting photos that capture the unique light and space of an interior, students will concentrate on the relationships of objects and light to create compositions that tell the story of the room. Time will be allocated for fast studies as well as longer painting sessions devoted to more finished paintings. The fast studies will allow students to “stay loose” with lots of energy, and the longer painting sessions will help students resolve issues and details. Focus will be on composition, brushwork, values, edges and color mixing. Students should bring their own photos of rooms that are personal to them or that they find inspiring – emphasis should be on interesting light, color or space.

"Beyond Description: Expressive Painting through Image Structure"
November 16-20, 2020

Your growth as an artist is my priority as we study great artists and unlock the universal secrets of image structure. At a primal level, it’s this abstract image structure that moves us-- the use of line, shape, space, value, color, and texture. This applies to any style or genre of painting because every good painting is good due to the underlying abstraction-- the power of the purely visual. Helping other artists exceed their own expectations is one of the most enjoyable things I do. The plan is always to help you reach your potential, painting your way, with your voice and vision, but better than ever before. You can paint representational or abstract. Oils, watercolors, collage, and acrylics welcome.

"Source to Studio"
December 1-5, 2020

This workshop is aimed at the more experienced landscape oil painter who wishes to explore the ideas, techniques and issues involved with expanding upon studies successfully in the studio. Jill will discuss concepts and techniques aimed to resolve and strengthen motifs and improve overall design, from initial ‘thought boards’ to actual preparation techniques. She will discuss the science of how we see and how we can control and excite eye movement. Moving on from advanced design concepts and tools, Jill will tackle the practical techniques of scaling up a design through ‘surface quality’ issues of working larger, working wet-over-dry, re-working passages that need correction, and the use of mediums, glazing techniques and varnishes.

"Alla Prima Portrait Painting"
December 4-7, 2020

Sean Cheetham uses a very distinct palette, called a “mud-palette”, when working on Alla Prima portraits. This palette will be discussed extensively throughout the workshop. The benefits of working with this palette are value and color control. Sean will discuss harmony and unity in one’s final piece. He will teach students a simple step-by-step process to painting Alla Prima portraits. Sean will be going over composition, drawing, likeness, organizing the palette, color mixing, value, edges, and producing a completed portrait. The workshop will start off with a demonstration and then Sean will continue to paint alongside the students throughout the weekend, as well as offering critiques. Since the focus will be on direct wet-into-wet painting, there will be a different model each day.

"Landscape Painting from Start to Finish: Creating Atmosphere, Space and Light"
December 5-7, 2020

The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep - a transparent sea of air. As we look out into the vista, we may not be conscious of actually seeing the air but we plainly see its effects on the landscape. When painters begin to go outside and use natural lighting, they will find that nature’s value scale is immeasurably beyond their own. Learn how to make a true representation of any scene in nature using “relative” rather than “absolute” or actual values and color relationships. Expect concept lectures, demonstration, and individual instruction as Doug winds students through the myriad of knowledge needed to develop their skills for painting beautiful and believable space. Students will be painting from photos.

"Suggesting Reality"
January 11-15, 2021

Art reveals the evidence of our experiences and values. This workshop will not only reinforce an understanding of composition and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. Students will participate in discussions regarding the subtleties, variations, lines, textures and colors that enliven our senses and captivate our interest; the way our eyes perceive things and how we make choices regarding their relative importance; the suggestion of the passage of time; the relative states of motion and stillness; how the artist may represent nature in order to reflect on his or her perceptions, experiences and values while also contemplating the important power of content, symbol and abstraction. Douglas demonstrates frequently.

"Painting the Portrait"
January 18-22, 2021

There are many criteria that go into creating a successful portrait. While capturing a good likeness of the sitter is very important, it’s not enough. A great portrait feels alive, evokes emotion, and captures the viewer through the beauty of its maker’s compositional and aesthetic choices. In this portrait painting workshop, Jeff Hein will discuss what he believes to be the key elements of creating a great portrait. He will discuss creating a concept, formulating good composition and designing of marks, strokes, and color. Jeff will also break down the formal process of painting a head into its most basic parts; drawing, value, and color. As students paint from a live model each day, Jeff will critique and assist on an individual basis.

Phil Starke will help students simplify the plein air subject and mix colors that suggest light, not detail. Two of the most important aspects to plein air painting are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. While staying at the Tubac Golf Resort, a restored 1800’s ranch, students will be near the Santa Rita Mountains on the Santa Cruz River. The historic village provides painting subjects such as old adobe buildings, street scenes and a nearby Spanish Church built in 1828. Phil will demonstrate and give plenty of individual attention. "The Figure: Arriving at Full Color"
February 12-16, 2021

This advanced workshop will explore Alla Prima painting in a progressive study from bold, accurate, monochromatic structure, reinterpreting this into color temperature, followed by directly relating these practices to a sensitive full-color understanding. There will be demos and one-on-one instruction. This intensive workshop will also avail students opportunities for open discussions of questions that sincere, passionate figural painters encounter. Students will be asked to explore what they wish to bring to their paintings of the figure. They will use the model to discover what painting problems (e.g. drawing, anatomy, paint quality, color, edges), or perhaps, what conceptual questions and creative directions intrigue them. Together with Rose, students will navigate what it is to be a painter who strives to be an artist.

"Beyond Description: Expressive Painting through Image Structure"
February 15-19, 2021

"Portrait Painting FAQ"
February 19-21, 2021

This advanced workshop will explore “Alla Prima” portrait painting and the frequently asked questions that can best help artists to navigate what they are seeing. What questions can artists ask themselves to better see the colors, values, edges, and proportions of the model? How can these questions contribute to a sensitive relationship between seeing, attention, and the quality of the experience with the model? Along with a demo, there will be a great deal of one-on-one instruction. Students will be asked to explore what they wish to bring to their portrait paintings, using the model as a conduit for discovering what painting problems (e.g. drawing, anatomy, paint quality, color, edges) or perhaps, what conceptual questions and creative directions intrigue them.

February 22-26, 2021

This workshop will focus on the foundational principles required to complete successful landscape paintings in the field. A solid understanding of drawing, value, design, and color is fundamental when it comes to analyzing the subject at hand and completing a solid painting. We will cover these principals in depth and discuss how they apply to organic form which is so commonly found in a natural environment. Participants should expect plenty of personal attention and daily demos. This class is open to all skill levels. On Monday, students will attend an all-day lecture series during which each instructor will lecture for approximately one hour. There will be four days of instruction (Tuesday-Friday). There will also be an artist panel Thursday, 6-8pm.

"Mastering Skies & Reflections in Oil, Acrylic or Pastel"
August 26-29, 2021

Master your landscape painting and join South Carolina artist Michael Story for this four day workshop as we use the sky and water as a dramatic design element in our painting’s composition. You’’ll begin your painting with an initial charcoal drawing, followed by a color wash applied over the image. Starting with shadow colors, you’ll begin blocking in your painting, then progressing dark to light to completion. Building final layers of color and avoiding muddy mixtures, you’ll achieve fresh, bright color while capturing depth, drama and mood to your work. He will demonstrate and provide photo reference to paint from if desired along with color exercises you may complete after the workshop. For more information, visit michaelstory.com.
