Life Drawing, also known as Figure Drawing, is the practice of drawing in order to study the human figure. If you look at historic artwork, you'll find many nude drawings and paintings. These are considered life drawings. Many artists perceive figure drawing as an endless effort with limitless possibility for improvement, learning, and diversity. The range of detail in a life drawing can vary immensely. They can range from highly detailed and anatomically proportional drawings to loose and expressive sketches to gesture drawings, which show the simple form, action and pose. Some popular mediums used during life drawings are charcoal, graphite, pen, ink and pastels. For the longer poses, some may use painting mediums like acrylics or oil.

Less is more! Start your day by making value studies from a landscape image of your own, then decide on the one that is the strongest composition. Then, recreate the scene on canvas or panel in acrylic or oil making decisions in establishing large and small shapes, values and color relationships while simplifying and moving away from the complexity of a photo.

This workshop will focus on painting the clothed figure from life. We’ll look at the considerations of setting up lighting on the figure and the role that light plays in the composition. The process of painting will start with a tonal study (grisaille) to block in the values and composition, then move to initial color notes, and then to more developed color. Demos include lighting the figure, understanding the relative values, grisaille and block in, and how to use the palette of colors to create light and shadow, warms and cools, and luminous skin tones. One-on-one feedback in a supportive atmosphere. Drawing experience highly recommended. Some experience with oils is useful. Mediums other than oil are welcome, but please consult instructor.

Harness the power of limited values to strengthen your design and improve your paintings. As the saying goes: “Value does the work and color gets the credit.” In this class you will learn to simplify your subject and use your value studies as a roadmap to a full color painting. This invaluable approach allows you to organize your shapes and values to work out compositional issues before dealing with color, making the painting process proceed more smoothly. You will also learn how a limited palette creates harmony in the color version of your painting. Demos and slideshows will illustrate the concepts I’m teaching.

The figure has been at the center of Scott Noel's art for forty years. This workshop will explore two complementary experiences with the life model. On the first day, the morning session will develop an interpretation of the body emphasizing gesture, mass, and volume. In the afternoon we will make an extended drawing in grisaille using black and white acrylic or gray pastels to evolve the body's forms into a shape-map that becomes continuous with the space surrounding the model. On the second day, we will work in oil or acrylic to integrate the previous day's discoveries with Charles Hawthorne's ideas of color discovery through the "spot of color" approach to the naming of shapes in the visual field. Scott will work alongside students.

A good painting has a lot of elements that contribute to its success. Color, value, technique and having a clear focus. All of these principles are explored by Aline, emphasizing looking at shapes in an abstract way in order to create illustrative paintings. Working from their own photo references, students will transform these into oil or pastel paintings using the principles of color, value and design. Along with a painting demonstration each day, Aline will talk about understanding color in terms of temperature, intensity and value while translating those ideas using pastel and oil technique. She will also emphasize the concept of creating shapes and carving back on them in order to achieve a painterly finish.

Cultivate fluid mark-making and bold approaches to subject matter through rapid and loose painting studies. Tight and precise painting, especially in the early stages of an artwork, can sometimes lead to work that appears stiff and over-labored, or to compositions that are difficult to change or correct. Working from the still life, cityscapes, and the life model, utilize short, small painting exercises to learn new ways of starting paintings, keeping compositions open to adjustment, and both initiating and retaining a sense of freshness in your forms and brushstrokes. Instruction will address color mixing, painting materials and methodologies, and the importance of setting a viable learning environment for your painting practice. The class will include lots of one-on-one instruction and a lecture exploring how both historical and contemporary painters approach tree construction. In painting, composition is much more than a system of rules or the placement of objects. Composition is the entire relationship of parts to whole, from the individual brushstroke to the largest shape. Brushstrokes themselves, far from being just surface texture, are carriers of direction and intent: every mark has a character and is part of the composition, moving the eye through the canvas, creating structure and meaning in painting. This oil painting workshop will focus on the gesture of brushwork and its role in making strong compositions. Brushstrokes can be wild and thrilling, or calming and caressing. Work will be from still life. We will also use some ink painting techniques as a path to understanding the gesture.

Successfully producing expressive, painterly paintings from photographs requires a knowledge of both the advantages and potential pitfalls of photographic sources. While providing useful visual information, photos often mislead - distorting subjects and flattening the picture plane. In this workshop students will use photographs as a point of departure, a reference point from which information will selectively and intelligently be drawn. Students will be encouraged to develop a more defined understanding of their connection to their selected subjects. Developing an enhanced visual awareness of compositional design, the importance of shapes, color harmony and paint application is critically important. This workshop will help students learn to “see” as painters. They will be challenged to take chances, be bold, expressive and spontaneous.

Imagine achieving amazing transparency for water and glass. Oil and acrylic paintings can have that transparent—almost watercolor—look through the application of specific techniques and methods in conjunction with use of a paint medium. We will find our subjects in studio from photo references and still life. Spontaneity of method and color mixing for the subject will be achieved through class demonstrations, technique exercises, individual attention and critiques. Students taking this course should have some experience using whatever medium they're taking the class in (oil or acrylic).

Learn a non-traditional approach to oil painting or explore oils for the first time. Cold wax medium is an additive that thickens oil paint, speeds up the drying time (a bit), and neutralizes the paint so there’s no concern about “fat over lean” rules. We will be using R&F’s Pigment Sticks (compressed oil paints) along with tube oils to create paintings without brushes or smelly solvents. You will discover new tools and methods for creating rich and authentic small works on paper and Ampersand’s Gessoboard. With Arches oil paper as our primary substrate, you’ll have several paintings going at once. This workshop is fun, a bit messy, and will change the way you think about oil painting.
