Learn how to marble colored porcelain with native clay from the Eastern Shore of Maryland! We'll start out with an artist talk describing how I source local clays and have developed my unique process, with a brief global history of clay marbling in ceramics. Then, using slab construction we'll construct a base planter to layer our marbled designs on the surface. I'll teach you my recipes for colored porcelain colors, and we can wedge crushed recycled glass, rocks, beach sand, and perlite into our prepared colored porcelain. Then I'll demonstrate how to layer different designs, to slice, stretch and reveal textures and layers of materials. You'll go home with a colorful geological planter after it's been fired.

Learning the skills to use the wheel can be hard but exciting. We encourage students to enjoy the experience, more than focus on a finished project. When hand building with clay a student can come in with a project idea like a mug, bowl, or even sculpture and finish their project in the hour.
