Anne is an engaged teacher and accomplished artist who fosters an environment where students can develop new skills, their personal voice and artistic sensibilities. "Carnaval Oaxaca Art + Culture Workshop: watercolor, mixed media"
February 26 - March 7, 2025
 

Need to feed your creative soul? Fill it to the brim with creative transformation and fresh inspiration. We'll mix art class - watercolor, natural pigments, mixed media/collage - with carefully curated field trips in magical Oaxaca: a traditional Carnaval celebration featuring La Danza de Los Diabilitos (Dance of the Devils) the Tuesday before Lent begins, a massive Zapotec Sunday market, a studio visit with a master mask maker where we'll paint our own masks, a master alebrije (wooden carved figures) family studio, a papermaking studio using local natural fibers, a gorgeous art center housed in a renovated textile factory, and a guided street art walk in a hip barrio - all mixed in with art instruction and creative play time.

We explore the dramatic landscape of Doolin, County Clare, Ireland and translate its landscape, energy and lore into visual artwork. "Art Journaling Workshop Oaxaca to Puebla: watercolor, mixed media/collage, ephemera hunt"
May 23 - June 2, 2025
 

This workshop features watercolor painting with Pedro – who incorporates personal symbols, Oaxacan culture, and the natural world into his work – and visual journaling with mixed media/collage an experimenting with mark making with Corrie, to develop your unique visual voice by playing with different materials. We’ll try some watercolor paints made from natural pigments, and you’ll use Oaxaca-sourced handmade paper in an artist book you create to take home. We combine art instruction with cultural immersion in magical Oaxaca, with its soulful art scene, indigenous culture, and rich culinary and artisanal traditions. We’ll visit ancient ruins and artisan villages for weaving, papermaking, and red clay. Then, a weekend escape to beautiful Puebla to search for vintage ephemera that we’ll collage.

"Atmospheric Colour in Figurative Painting"
November 1-8, 2025
 

This course will focus on using colour in figurative painting to create atmospheric and expressive paintings. You will work from a life model, participating in exercises based in colour theory. You will try out techniques such as painting on a coloured ground and making colour paintings from black and white drawings. This foundational work will sharpen your observational skills and deepen your technical understanding of colour. Beyond these technical elements, we will explore how to use colour to express something of our inner lives. We will take inspiration from art history by studying artists such as Gwen John, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Sargy Mann, Pierre Bonnard, and Milton Avery. "Exploring Water Based Mixed Media : Colour and Texture"

During this painting holiday, Ali will be exploring a variety of water-based media including watercolours, Brusho, water soluble pens & crayons, and acrylic inks. She will encourage you to experiment to your heart’s delight…and then guide you through planning and including some of these ideas in your paintings. Ali has a lot of exciting techniques to share. You will also be encouraged to use materials usually saved for the kitchen as well as materials from nature. You will be greatly encouraged to add texture and pattern and interest to your paintings. This could be anything from print to splattering techniques. Ali pushes her students to experiment and therefore evolve as artists. She is known for her enthusiastic and fun-loving approach.
