August 19, 2026

Kids can choose to work on the potter’s wheel or hand build with clay using coils, slabs or molds. Working on the potter’s wheel is more of an experience at first. Learning the skills to use the wheel can be hard but exciting. We encourage students to enjoy the experience, more than focus on a finished project. When hand building with clay a student can come in with a project idea like a mug, bowl, or even sculpture and finish their project in the hour. At the end of class students will choose their favorite 1-2 pieces of their art to be fired and glazed by the instructor. Pottery will be ready approximately 2–4 weeks after the class.

"Exploring Ceramic Glazes: Let the Color Begin!"
Tuesdays, September 22 - October 27, 2026

This workshop is designed for ceramic artists who want to better understand glazes, color development, and surface possibilities in their work. A special emphasis will be placed on Mason Color ceramic stains and how they can be used to expand your palette and create richer, more personal surface effects. For potters who rely mainly on art center glazes or commercial prepackaged glazes, this class offers an opportunity to learn how colorants and glaze materials interact to create safer, more beautiful glazes. We will review a detailed handout that describes the materials used in glazes and why they matter, discuss common glaze problems and how to begin correcting them, and explore how to test and adjust glazes to better meet your needs.

"Paper Clay: An Introduction to Hand Building with Paper Clay"
Tuesdays, September 22 - December 8, 2026

Join Jerry Bennett, a leading international paper clay artist, as he guides you in making paper clay and bonding slips for hand-built pottery and sculptural forms. Paper clay (fiber clay) is the process in ceramics where artists add cellulose fibers to make the clay easier to work with and more plastic. These fibers burn out after the first firing leaving only the clay remaining. However, many of the rules that govern regular clay do not apply to paper clay. Gain valuable insights as Jerry shares practical, problem-solving advice, such as fixing broken work and preventing cracks. Demonstrations focus on slab construction, but students are free to experiment with coil building, pinching, and extrusion. Decorating techniques include underglaze, textures, colored slips, and glaze applications.

"Art Critique with a Focus on Ceramics"
Wednesdays, September 23 - December 16, 2026

A ceramics critique in an art class can involve evaluating a piece of pottery for its form, technique, and meaning. It can also include considering how the piece is constructed, what it represents, and how it evokes or represents emotions. Reviewing other people's work, techniques, and artistic intent can help you clarify your thoughts, evaluate your work, and make better pottery. This online workshop, which will be an open discussion, will be fun and focused. The class will review many ceramic artists weekly through the internet. We will discuss a design element, such as line or texture, and then look at ceramic artists or sculptures representing these design elements. We will look at the artist's intent and presentation of their work.

Thursdays, October 1 - December 10, 2026

Bring your young artists to join us in the ceramics studio as we learn various hand-building methods for creating and decorating ceramic masterpieces. Each week's project will include a method of constructing clay by hand (pinch, coil, slab, etc.) and plenty of opportunities for self-expression and experimentation. After students construct a clay piece and paint it with colorful glazes, projects will be fired in electric kilns. Students should bring their imagination and be prepared to get messy as we dive into the world of functional and sculptural ceramics. This is a 10-week, 1.5 hour, after school class.

"KinderART & Clay (Ages: 4-6)"
Saturdays, October 3 - December 12, 2026

In this course, children discover new mediums and ideas in art. They begin to identify differences in art such as distinguishing between bright and light, as well as dull and dark colors, find basic shapes within larger objects, and identify types of lines, such as long/short, thick/thin, and straight/curved, then include them in their work. Enrich your child's school-based art program with a more in-depth exploration of art. Employing a wide range of mediums, including drawing and painting, printmaking, ceramics and mixed media, this is an exciting opportunity for children who are looking to take their artistic learning to the next level. This is a 10-week, 1.5 hr. Saturday class.
