Kids can choose to work on the potter’s wheel or hand build with clay using coils, slabs or molds. Working on the potter’s wheel is more of an experience at first. Learning the skills to use the wheel can be hard but exciting. We encourage students to enjoy the experience, more than focus on a finished project. When hand building with clay a student can come in with a project idea like a mug, bowl, or even sculpture and finish their project in the hour. Pinching is commonly thought of as a beginner's technique but has so many possibilities. We will be exploring working large, altering forms, and burnishing. The workshop will conclude with a pit-fire which smokes the works in unpredictable ways. The pots will be buried in sawdust and smoldered overnight. Jimmy's approach to working with clay is in cooperation with the material where the creator is encouraged to "listen to the clay". That is to allow the clay and the environment to help determine the ultimate size and form. This passive or intuitive method is complimented by the firing that defies ultimate control. In this workshop, students will explore surface decoration using terra-sigillata, an ultra-refined slip. Autumn McKay will demonstrate how she uses t-sig with colorful Mason stains to create layered narratives over the surfaces of her forms. She will discuss tips and tricks for t-sig; how to make it, adding colorants, application, and how to avoid issues like flaking. Each student will have the opportunity to explore using the t-sig on at least one tile. This workshop encourages play, color, and experimentation with creating depth in layers.

For centuries, the magical light of the Low Countries has captivated Dutch painters—the endless skies, shifting clouds, quiet waterways, and ever-changing atmosphere. Join me this June–July for a unique painting retreat in Zwolle and the beautiful landscapes of Overijssel. We’ll paint historic streets, peaceful waterways, and dramatic Dutch skies, while also exploring other creative techniques: painting on ceramics, a monotype workshop, and drawing a live model at the local artists’ club. You’ll stay in a 4-star hotel in the heart of Zwolle, just steps from the charming historic city centre. My atelier, nearby, will be our creative home for gathering, working, sharing, and reflecting.
