Artists who are interested in improving their work often get stalled in their progress and just need a kick-start to get back on the path for excellence. This workshop is a chance to take a good honest look at your current work and consider what exactly needs improvement. The class will be divided into three parts: identification of the one area that most needs improvement, individualized exercises to address the problem, studio painting to put new ideas in to practice. Four weeks of online mentoring is included as a follow up to the class.

In this workshop led by award-winning artist Ernest Vincent Wood III, both novice and experienced painters will enhance their skills in capturing an animal’s essence. Participants will delve into the fundamental techniques and principles of oil painting, focusing specifically on the structure and unique characteristics of animals and horses. Through a series of demonstrations, guided exercises, and personalized instruction, participants will learn how to capture the detail of fur and hair and explore what makes animal and equine subjects come to life: light, color harmonies, brushwork, and emphasis on shape and structure. From the powerful presence of a horse to the quiet, peaceful sleeping cat or the joy on a dog’s face, students will learn how to convey emotion and character through their paintings.
