"Painting from the Heart"
April 17-19, 2020

What makes a painting memorable? What makes you want to enter, explore and never leave that two-dimensional surface? Why does it touch your heart? Using a series of freeing exercises, we will delve into this idea. Learn to create a dialogue with the painting where you are responding to the painting rather than following the photo's plan for you. Learn that your memory is your greatest asset as it unlocks the door to your personal vision. Open up and allow it to rule. Through it you can enter the journey of making your work a more personal experience.

"Encaustic Collage and Mixed Media Workshop"
April 23-25, 2020

Encaustic and paper are an incredibly versatile match. This workshop will begin to explore the possibilities of combining a variety of paper types and weights with encaustic medium and paints, as well as pigment sticks and other materials, to create works with a optical depth, luminosity, and a painterly quality. We will begin by making a few of our own papers through various processes such as rust printing and ink drawing. All base mediums and paints will be supplied for use, however, students will be encouraged to also bring a variety of found papers and other materials to include in their work. Students do not need prior experience with encaustic painting, but general art making experience is helpful.

May 12-14, 2020

Participants will create mixed media/collage paintings on canvas using an intuitive process, starting with no preconceived or elaborate planning. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of collage materials and techniques to implement color, texture (real and implied), line, shape and value. Instruction will start with semi-arbitrary application of collage materials in combination with acrylic, gesso, acrylic mediums and assorted mark making tools. There will be regular comments and evaluation as work progresses concerning relationships between design elements and principles. The goal is a mixed media/collage painting which is visually pleasing and aligned with the artist’s personal aesthetic. A critique will be held at the end of the last day.
