"Create & Collaborate: Oil & Cold Wax Retreat"
February 18-19, 2023

“I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.” – Mother Teresa. Join with other artists for two days of working with cold wax medium. This open exploration is for anyone that has taken previous cold wax classes and wants to come together and share ideas, tips, tricks, and community. This is not a guided, instructional workshop; instead it is a gathering time and space for artists to connect. Students may start new paintings or work on pieces already under way. No materials provided, so bring your own. While this is not an instructional session, Rick will be available to share ideas and techniques and answer questions.

"Paper Marbling 101"
March 4, 2023

Paper marbling is an easy and fun way of creating beautiful artwork. Pigments are floated on a viscous water-based solution and then transferred to prepared paper. The result is a one of a kind creation of color, swirls and unique organic patterns. In this session, participants will learn about how marbling works including a discussion on prep work (which will have already been done), supplies (provided) and the tools used (also provided). Students will choose the pigments, design and create seven pieces of marbled paper! *Paper will need time to dry. Students will have to return to the studio to pick up finished pieces later in the day or the following week*

"Color Mixing, Color Balance, and Color Charts"
March 11, 2023

In this class geared towards artists or those looking to take their art to the next level, we will explore mixing oils. We’ll mix as many colors as we can using the fewest number of “mother” colors. We’ll explore using basic colors and then add some additional colors for comparison. We will make color charts to keep track of our mixes and we’ll do all of this without dirtying a brush. Color mixing is also a good time to practice wielding a palette knife! Beginners are welcome. Supplies to bring along: Pencil or pen for labeling your color charts. Ruler if you’re using tape to make the squares.

"Value Does the Work, Color Gets the Credit"
March 12, 2023

In this oil painting class we will explore the role of value vs color. We’ll start by doing some very basic value studies and progress to using color. The aim of this class is to give you some experience in seeing the value relationships of a scene. We’ll use color photos as references, mine or bring your own. For substrates you can use canvas paper, gessoed paper, or gessoed panels. We can do the value studies in black/white mixes or any other single darker color plus white. Beginners are welcome. There will be a lunch break, so please either bring a lunch (fridge and microwave available) or be prepared to purchase food nearby.

"Boro-Inspired Wearable Art"
March 23-25, 2023

Boro mending, kantha cloth, the Quilts of Gee’s Bend. Each of these evokes images of old, worn fabrics, simply but beautifully stitched for a new purpose. In this workshop we explore the traditions that created these garments and then look to them for inspiration in creating new works of wearable fiber art. Beginning with pieces of old and/or beloved fabrics—vintage linens, pieces of worn jeans, even bits of blankets or tattered garments—we select, curate, layer, and hand stitch them into new life as a work of wearable art. This workshop is a meditative blend of history, hand work, repurposing, and art making. This class is suitable for all levels of fiber artists, but some hand stitching experience is required.

"Power of Black and White: Intro to Scratchboard"
April 1-2, 2023

The process of scratchboard is as basic as drawing with a pencil. The artist uses a knife instead of a pencil and applies the strokes to a panel coated with black india ink over white clay instead of applying to white paper. With each stroke of the knife blade, a scratch removes the black ink revealing the white beneath. We’ll be initially inspired by viewing contemporary scratchboard artists’ works, then do an exercise to gain confidence in removing a wide range of black and creating those grey tones, and finally on the second day we’ll do a quick review of composition and be starting our own artworks using our chosen subject matter and an excellent composition.

"Photo + Encaustic: Ethereal Markings and Monochrome"
June 20-23, 2023

This workshop is designed for both painters and photographers interested in gaining new skills and pushing the boundaries of their studio practice through the combination of encaustic, collage, and black and white photography. Explore a range of subject matter, paper rusting techniques, and methods for mixing media to create dynamic hybrid artworks. Begin by utilizing various methods of underdrawings to bring in pattern and additional detail to the work, such as wood burning tools, inks, oil paints, and encaustic. Focus is placed on incorporating embedded photo prints on thin papers such as tissue and Japanese papers, as well as image transfers to create final work that is both ethereal and richly detailed in its layers. Individualized feedback is provided
