Art Workshops, Classes & Retreats

"Buckles, Bolos and Barbed Wire: The Art of the Buckle"
July 17, 2020

Belt buckles may not fit perfectly into the category of jewelry, but they can certainly be considered wearable pieces of art. In this full-day workshop you will learn to make a very personalized belt buckle for yourself or a special someone. Although the examples shown are decidedly Western in look, your challenge will be to create a buckle that reflects your own aesthetic. The common elements will be to have a pierced brass overlay and edge embellishments ... beyond that, the design choices are up to you. Buckles are a great way to showcase a special stone, coin, or other object. Find examples of non-Western buckles with a simple Google search. Sawing and soldering skills required.

"Woven Stitch Collagraph Book"
July 17, 2020

This workshop will focus on a unique combination of collagraph printmaking – a form of collage – and book structures. Printing plates will be produced with collage and hot glue to create free-flowing designs. There are tremendous opportunities to experiment with textures with this unpredictable, in a good way, method. The plate design is very versatile and durable for continued print runs, providing enough prints for two or more books. The multi-signature book structures will be constructed with open-spine woven stitches, creating a color block effect on the spine. The content will include multiple image repeats from the colllagraph process. These will be manipulated with water media and color pencil to individualize the pages.

"Poured Painted Surfaces"
July 19, 2020

Putting paint on paper can be a mixed bag of unexpected surprises with unknown endings. Pouring paint onto paper will certainly give you combos of astonishingly intense and luminescent colors. This process will also allow you to discover ways to define the space around shapes with contrast and glazed colors. Part of the beauty of this technique is revealing some of the underlining imagery of shapes in selected spots. Imagine and paint the space around objects with watercolors and gouache – opaque water-based paint. Work with some very contemporary, good-vibe iridescent, interference, and opaque watercolor techniques to further enhance and embellish the surface. Discover that painting is about discovery and expression at all levels of creativity.

"Abstract Fiber Sculpting"
July 31 - August 2, 2020

I want to challenge you to see fabric and soft sculpture in a new way, to step outside our preconceived ideas of what is textile art. Using hand stitching and alternative techniques, we will be creating organic shapes inspired by creative exercises and our natural environment. We will explore combining found objects with fiber to create unique textures and embellishments. After we have generated lots of shapes and components to choose from we will approach the process like an assemblage, combining the individual pieces to create a larger abstract sculpture on top of a rigid armature. Intuition and spontaneity will be our companions. This class is completely accessible to the beginner and yet can also challenge the more advanced student.

"Akasha Dolls"
August 27, 2020

Akasha is the Sanskrit word for spirit, but more directly, it means the basis and essence of all things in the material world. Spirit dolls are art objects that are easy to create from recycled materials. These spirit dolls were initially created as a way to work through grief and trauma. The ritualized deconstruction of the garments and repetitive wrapping works as both art technique and meditative process. The finished dolls become the embodiment of the spirit of memory and can be used as a vehicle to transfigure sadness. These dolls are easy to create with simple household materials. Some physical dexterity is needed for hand sewing and stitching.

"Three Letter Words"
August 28, 2020

Some words are mighty though only three letters: sky, all, now, you. They call up imagery the second you hear them. In this class, we will transfer (or you can make your own) letterforms to small canvas, and add imagery that calls to us. The technique we will use is dry brush, and involves painting the negatives instead of the positives. It is a silhouetting of sorts, an illustration technique that is handy because it is a fast and easy way to work, and a good exercise in seeing shapes. Our palette will be limited, as will our vocabulary of images, so you can easily do this in one day.

"Soul Houses"
August 30, 2020

The symbolism linked to birds goes back to the ancient world, where birds were considered to be a supernatural connection between the gods and men. In many Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, birds can represent immortality. In East Indian and Christian mythologies, birds represent the soul. These soul houses are a safe haven for your hopes and dreams. This class will introduce you to the art of assemblage as you learn to construct basic house forms that have relevance and meaning in your own world. "Moku Hanga: An Intro to Japanese Woodblock Printing"
October 2-4, 2020

Moku Hanga, meaning "wood print," is a simple, centuries-old Japanese technique employing water-based ink, basic carving and rubbing tools, beautiful Japanese paper, and fine-grained wood. Many Western printmaking methods involve complex printing presses, oil-based inks, and toxic solvents. By contrast, Moku Hanga utilizes only a few simple tools, a small work space, and is entirely water-based. Alfred will teach you to hand-carve and print your unique drawing from fine-grained Shina Plywood onto beautiful Japanese paper, a skill you can continue to use to make prints for many years. No experience necessary. You are encouraged to bring photos or drawings you can use in creating your print.

"Believing Art, Process and Series - Collage"
October 22-25, 2020

Students will explore surface techniques building their own collage palette that will stretch new awareness and growth. Everyone will be working with harmony, values, differences, and the relationships of design elements, each pulling from their own feelings, experiences of inter-connectedness to mind, body, spirit. Emphasis will be on working in a series. As we get older, we grow self-conscious and judgmental, believing that art is not good unless it's realistically recognizable. Collage, design, and mixed media offer up a playful experimental atmosphere that is safe for all to find a deeper meaning to the art-making process. Students' collage works will emerge and evolve on watercolor paper and wood panel, fused with heat and tack-iron method.
