"Painting the Story in Still-Life"
April 30 - May 2, 2018

Every painting, even the humble still life, has a story in it. It’s told by what subject we choose to paint, how we present that subject, and how we paint it. Finding what interests us in a subject and how we connect to it drives that story, and directs how the painting is made. We’ll work on small still life paintings to explore the process—from thumbnail sketches, lighting the subject, considerations of composition, to the application of oil paint to build form with light, color and mark. We will walk the line between technique and intuition, using the still life as a way to explore paint and why we make art.

"Sculpting the Portrait"
July 16-19, 2018

In this four day course, sculptor Jason Arkles leads the class in creating life sized portraits in clay from a living model, using the visual measurement techniques of the Sight Size method. Students will learn how to build clay portraits over an armature, relying almost entirely on measurements taken with the artist's eye, rather than with measuring tools like compasses. The result is a portrait that goes beyond a 'likeness' and towards a record of the artist's visual and emotional perception of the sitter – a true portrait. Instructor Jason Arkles will work alongside students throughout the duration of the course, providing a demonstration of techniques and practices for the entirety of the course.

"Painting the Figure (all media welcome)"
July 30 - August 1, 2018

Award-winning artist, Peggi Kroll-Roberts worked as a fashion and advertising illustrator before making the transition into fine art. Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she moved into fine art with a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves a lot with a few very energetic brush strokes. She prefers to suggest reality than render it. Peggi will work with students in the medium of their choice - acrylic, watercolor, oil or gouache.

September 6-8, 2018

This workshop is designed to help students (beginning, intermediate or advanced) paint in an intuitive manner starting without preconceived notions or outcome. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of materials and techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value. The process starts with arbitrary mark making. Students will continue working transparent to opaque building layers with watercolor, acrylic, gesso and other materials. There will be ongoing evaluation of work in progress and the use of compositional design elements. It is entirely possible finished work may be figurative or representational but the goal is to produce aesthetically pleasing work which is unique and reflective of the artist’s mind.
