"Adding the "You" Factor to Your Paintings 2"
March 26-28, 2018

This workshop is all about making unique, personal, and creative paintings. We will explore options and strategies for you to try on that will include still life, figure, and landscape examples of each concept as well as a look at the art history behind it. Plan on bringing personal photos or sketches of subject matter that you love to paint or would love to paint. The subject will be the jumping off place – the real subject will be YOU. Our focus will be on seeing and thinking abstractly, crafting a beautifully designed painting, and finding and expressing that thing that is your own.

"Image to Abstract 2"
April 3-5, 2018

Are you ready to push your work beyond the point of recognizable subject matter into the realm of pure abstraction? This workshop will have students start with traditional representational approaches and move through progressively more abstract techniques until arriving at purely non-objective paintings. Special attention will be paid to the elements of composition as they apply to abstract painting. Through a combination of slideshows, discussions, assignments and critiques, this workshop will expose students to new artistic possibilities for self-expression. Students should bring their own reference photos and also plan to take photos during the workshop. Printed photos and/or digital images on laptop/iPad may be used for reference. Photo editing software is also helpful but not required.

"The Expressive Landscape"
April 9-11, 2018

Do you want your paintings to stand out, to be more expressive, to say more? The Expressive Landscape workshop will teach you to make choices for your paintings based on the emotional content of the painting. You will spend time discovering "Why" you choose to paint what you paint and learn ways to focus on what you want your paintings to say. You will then use that information and knowledge to enable yourself to be more expressive with the painting process. You'll learn to use basics such as composition, format, color and subject matter to create paintings that go beyond being technically proficient to something that has a much deeper emotional connection to both the artist and the viewer.

"Eco Printing"
April 16-17, 2018

Eco Printing is a process using leaves, flowers, fruits, vegetables and other natural materials to create amazing colorful prints on paper or fabric. Through a process of steaming or emersion, the natural tannins plants are printed onto the surface through pressure, contact, and a chemical reaction. This produces a wide-range of colors resulting in a never-ending surprise. No artistic experience is necessary to take this class - just the willingness to experiment, a love of surprises, and a joy for nature.

"Painting the Story in Still-Life"
April 30 - May 2, 2018

Every painting, even the humble still life, has a story in it. It’s told by what subject we choose to paint, how we present that subject, and how we paint it. Finding what interests us in a subject and how we connect to it drives that story, and directs how the painting is made. We’ll work on small still life paintings to explore the process—from thumbnail sketches, lighting the subject, considerations of composition, to the application of oil paint to build form with light, color and mark. We will walk the line between technique and intuition, using the still life as a way to explore paint and why we make art.
