"Contemporary Approaches to Mixed Media Art"
March 12-15, 2018

Joan is especially gifted in helping students gain more freedom in the creative process and discover their own unique artistic voice. Join us for inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. You’ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up, working in a series, mixing and utilizing neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts. We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! There’ll be plenty of time for “playing” and creating along with individual attention and guidance.

"Earth, Wind, Fire"
April 20-24, 2018

Practices of intimate visual-journaling cultivate insight into the nature of the creative process and its multiple relations to emotional stories of loss and mend. Enriched by self trust and acceptance, images, photos, paper, paint, words, pen, line, thread, and many unconventional tools and materials entwine to make expressive, complex and extremely personal books. It’s all about one’s willingness to reveal vulnerability and rawness for the sake of true creative freedom, newness, and a deep sense of interconnectedness to all. Experiencing honest and joyous journeys takes precedence over producing beautiful outcomes. Ultimately, this process is about depicting the fluidity of life, about effortlessly carrying one’s self from one place to another and about connecting to a larger world than our own.

"Landscapes on the Loose"
June 19-20, 2018

In this workshop students will learn: Ways to create bold, loose and impetuous paintings and not pains-taking ones; How to use the important “artistic license” to suggest trees, rocks, beaches, branches, grasses, fields, flowers, skies and water; About aerial perspective to keep things loose and easy; To identify what attracts them to that landscape and then how to translate that focus into a painting; How to remove clutter — and add space; To recognize barriers to seeing creatively and free up visual exploration. Students will have time to work on their own with plenty of support as they gain insight into a new way of looking at loosening up landscape paintings.

"Still Life: Structure and Variation"
July 9-13, 2018

Still life will be the starting point for exploration of pictorial structure, space and invention. This will lead us to create images in the simplest terms: a series of shapes and colors made of paint (not a beach ball or a flower). We will generate permutations of the chosen motif through reduction and analysis. As we walk the line between accuracy and abstraction, we will see through and around the meaning of things to grasp relationships between objects and space. Mediums will include graphite, charcoal, ink, acrylic or oil paint, and collage. The personal voice of each painter will come through in the diverse results. Looking at historical and contemporary still life paintings will place the practice in a larger context.

"Venetian Plaster and Acrylic Mixed Media Paintings"
July 12-15, 2018

Venetian Plaster plays well with acrylics, and here is the secret: one stays put when wet and the other can be removed. Simple, but there are many tips and tricks for combining the two. We are going to learn how to apply the plaster onto fabrics and then crackle the surface. You will learn how to create a background on panel using acrylic gels and pastes, layer color, add plaster and then start excavating. It is like a treasure hunt. I love this because it uses both sides of the creative brain. You follow the techniques, but then you intuitively layer and excavate. These techniques may be applied to any painting style.

"Ro-zome: Patterns and Textures"
July 14-16, 2018

Rozome, the Japanese wax-resist process, has caught the interest of fiber artists around the world. It’s the rozome artists’ techniques in shading, control, and luminosity that set their work apart from the batik of other countries. In this special workshop you will explore the textural and pattern possibilities of Japanese ro-etching (wax etching), ro-fubuki (wax snowstorm), ro-roller (rolled wax pattern), momo-otoshi (rub and remove), shikibiki (wax trailing), ro-kata (wax stencil), han-bosen (half-resist) and bokashi, the Japanese shading technique that makes work glow with luminosity. You will work with the sansei-senryo acid dyes of the kimono industry and the natural dyes of soy and beeswax. All the wax and dye techniques taught are applicable to either silk or cotton fabric.

"Abstract Acrylic Painting and the Spirit in Nature"
July 16-19, 2018

In this 4 day workshop you will practice abstract acrylic painting techniques that are connected to the spirit in nature. We will begin by identifying our spiritual and emotional connection to the four elements earth, air, fire and water. We will identify how each of these elements is sensed and perceived and then translated into abstract painting. Instruction will include demonstrations in acrylic painting techniques including painting with rust to create the patina of age, sumi ink and Stabillo pencils to create expressive mark making, handmade stenciling and printing to create patterns. The results are alive, authentic and exhilarating. Unveil the mysteries of abstraction by practicing techniques in form, rhythm and motion. Each student will receive individual instruction and group critique.

"Ro-kata Intensive II: Wax-Resist Stencil"
July 18-22, 2018

This Ro-kata class offers many possibilities for creative, innovative design work on silk with Japanese acid dyes. Using Japanese kata-zome stencil-dyeing history for inspiration, we will further explore the four ways of interpreting one design in a cut stencil and add exploration of other design motifs, from floral to architecture to single image stencils. Throughout the week we will look at textural printing, shadow image, and matrix use. The class will include slides of Japanese kata-zome/ro-zome design for background information as well as actual examples from Kiranada’s collection. Come join us.

"One Thousand Collages Abstraction and the Figure - Without a Model"
August 3-5, 2018

An exploration of pure abstraction and the abstraction in the figure through collage. We will draw and paint by means of collage. What we put down on paper are real things that we can adjust, just as we pose the model in our studio. It is this abstraction that we must adjust if we are working purely abstractly or if we are working from life. Next, we will move into the third dimension and make figures from corrugated cardboard. We will work with them and, with our rediscovered freedom, without them. All on a path away from copying and rendering towards a more exciting, and ultimately, a more real picture of what we find beautiful in the human figure and the world.

"Abstract Explorations in Acrylic Painting"
August 20-23, 2018

If the word “experimentation” causes your artistic juices to start flowing, then this is the workshop for you. Jo bases her fun filled workshop on the belief that if you approach your art with a playful attitude, you will be more apt to keep making art, and the more art you make, the better your art will be. To facilitate this attitude of experimentation and exploration, you will be creating small “practice samples” that are no larger than 10” x 10”. By working in this small manner, you will have more freedom to enjoy the process, learn the technique, and move away from your usual way of working. Jo will ignite your passion for “possibility” and rekindle your joy in the painting process.

"Machine Felting Master Class"
August 27-31, 2018

As always the principal emphasis during the class is how to control your materials, using the Felting Frame to do all the hard work. Control of line, colour and form. Another major aspect of this master class is interpreting and composing the images by painting and drawing with wool fibres. Other principles covered are fine workmanship and felting quality. During the class we will touch on a few different artistic techniques such as composition, proportion and colour theory as necessary. Learn to play with colours and contrast, light and shade, not forgetting colour contrast and composition. We’ll help you find your focal point in the design, and work around it until you find a comfortable balance. Do something that inspires you!

"Color, Texture, Feeling"
September 6-9, 2018

By combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums with various “raw” materials the end result in abstract painting is the creative accomplishment. This method presents the magnetism that is the abstraction to mixed media. Many techniques, materials, compositions and, above all, emotion play off of each other when creating the piece. There is adventure in not knowing where you are going with it until you get there! You will become enlightened as you journey through this process. You must be able to let go of all painting habits to gain the knowledge of layering textures, color and feelings. Executing shapes by utilizing positive and negative space will be discussed. This is the cultivation that nurtures our souls.

"Spontaneous Stitch"
October 4-5, 2018

There is something enchanting about hand-stitching. We are drawn to stitch and can almost feel the vitality of the person who created the sewn marks. The purpose of this workshop is to guide you through lively exercises for making your own work in a spontaneous and fresh manner. The two day session is filled with music, doodling, stitching and fun. I will present ideas and methods through samples, books, powerpoint presentations, and music. Students are encouraged to bring a small sampling (1 to 3) of their own stitched items to share with the group to help each of us gain a sense of community, sharing, and mutual respect. This is a nice kick-start session for building a meditative and purposeful style of hand-stitching.

"Paper Paintings Birds & Blooms Workshop"
November 2-4, 2018

During this comprehensive workshop you will learn a unique figurative, mixed media collage technique. Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every paper tear as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings. You'll create a hand-painted paper palette through Gelli Plate printing, staining, stamping and patterning, that will be torn up and glued over an acrylic underpainting. Throughout the class we'll focus on learning and growing creatively in a fun environment. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting experience is helpful. All levels are welcome.
