"Environmental Portraiture"
June 6-7, 2018

How does a portrait anchored in a particular location offer more information about the person in the frame? How can the environment act as an extensible metaphor of interiority or show you what the person cares about and how they spend their time. Explore examples of environmental portraiture, the act of photographing subjects in specific places. Make your own portraits integrating ideas of place more conscientiously into your compositions. Often environmental portraiture focuses on where people spend time working or living, but you will think of this idea to include the natural surroundings of Door County. Use your camera to talk to strangers and find out more about their life. Familiarity with your camera is required for this workshop.

"Very Short Films"
June 8-9, 2018

Some photographs convey a story, a narrative that veers on the cinematic. These photographs appear to have a beginning already in motion, a dramatic situation in progress, and a conclusion that is up to the viewer to complete. How do you as a photographer create a scene specifically to photograph it? We’ll examine the work of Cindy Sherman’s Film Stills and Gregory Crewdon’s Twilight as examples of this approach, as well as many others. As a group, you will analyze these cinematic photographs and discuss considerations like character, conflict, tableau, lighting, props, and logistics. Together scout a location, cast a lead and supporting cast, and photograph the story as it unfolds. Together, the class will make films that are one frame in length.
