The class is designed and run to support artists at all levels of development. Students will learn and develop skills in underpainting, composition, impasto, glazing and scumbling. Beginning students will work with foundational exercises. Experienced students may, by agreement with the instructor, work on independent projects with supervision.

Paint a portrait in black & white, a values study, with a colorful background and use oil paint that provides the lovely smooth blending. So, yes, oil paints, traditional or water-soluble using black & white paint and a background color. We’ll review the planes & value changes in the face, the lights & darks. So, bring in a photo with some shadows & let’s paint. Fun! Artists at all levels are welcome.

Join award-winning painter Teresa Oaxaca for a two-day exploration of koi as a subject for oil painting. Through demonstrations, lectures, and individualized instruction, students will learn to create luminous water effects, convincing reflections, transparency, movement, and strong compositions inspired by these graceful fish. Beginning with the fundamentals of drawing and design, Teresa will demonstrate how to simplify complex water patterns into clear visual statements while building believable depth beneath the surface. Students will explore value, color harmony, edge control, and brushwork to create the illusion of light moving through water. Each student will complete a small- to medium-sized painting while developing techniques that can be applied to future paintings of water, flowers, wildlife, and other natural subjects.
