Fabulous skies inspire awe and are often the reason we choose to paint a particular scene. The sky is constantly changing from dawn to dusk, in rain or sunshine, and its colors and cloud formations are what create so much drama. When a spectacular sky becomes the focus of a painting, it serves as the visual anchor of the composition—essentially, a skyscape. "Abstract Art: A Sense of Place" Encaustic Monotype Workshop by instructor Jorge Luis Bernal is a 2-day studio intensive that explores emotional and conceptual connections to physical environments through heated wax printmaking. This educational class focuses away from traditional replication to give artists the tools to distill complex ideas of "home" and "nation" into layered, expressive abstractions. This workshop takes a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of a strong landscape composition. The emphasis is on shapes and editing. And the goal is to create the illusion of details in your landscape painting without unnecessary rendering, resulting in a more expressive and eloquent capture of your subject. We’ll work through a painting process that maintains the initial shapes and editing, while learning to make selective decisions for the finishing stages. Values and edges will also be addressed. Students will start off using instructor-provided reference photos but will have the option to use their own photos, too. This workshop is open to all levels but geared primarily toward artists with at least some basic painting experience.

Impressionism provides a platform for stretching the boundaries of realism. In this workshop, I will focus on color while introducing some new tools for painting Impressionistic images. While some may go more representational and others more abstract, the basic tenet of impressionism relies on broken color and a heightened sensitivity to color. I am known to rely on the palette knife to help generate highly colored images, but your tools will be of your choosing, be it palette knives, brushes, wedges, or spatchers. My goal is to help you cultivate your skills and use of color as you explore and enhance your personal visual voice (the unique way in which you interpret and reflect what you see in creating your image).
