After students construct a clay piece and paint it with colorful glazes, projects will be fired in electric kilns. Students should bring their imagination and be prepared to get messy as we dive into the world of functional and sculptural ceramics. This is a 10-week, 1.5 hour, after school class.

Pinching is commonly thought of as a beginner's technique but has so many possibilities. We will be exploring working large, altering forms, and burnishing. The workshop will conclude with a pit-fire which smokes the works in unpredictable ways. The pots will be buried in sawdust and smoldered overnight. Jimmy's approach to working with clay is in cooperation with the material where the creator is encouraged to "listen to the clay". That is to allow the clay and the environment to help determine the ultimate size and form. This passive or intuitive method is complimented by the firing that defies ultimate control. Class tuition includes your first bag of stoneware clay as well as glazes and firing.

For older and more advanced ceramic students, participants work in the ceramics studio where they learn and develop hand-building and wheel-throwing skills. Students have an opportunity to examine works of more advanced artists before using artist-grade tools and equipment to create their own handmade pieces. In this course, children discover new mediums and ideas in art. They begin to identify differences in art such as distinguishing between bright and light, as well as dull and dark colors, find basic shapes within larger objects, and identify types of lines, such as long/short, thick/thin, and straight/curved, then include them in their work. In this workshop, students will explore surface decoration using terra-sigillata, an ultra-refined slip. Autumn McKay will demonstrate how she uses t-sig with colorful Mason stains to create layered narratives over the surfaces of her forms. She will discuss tips and tricks for t-sig; how to make it, adding colorants, application, and how to avoid issues like flaking. Each student will have the opportunity to explore using the t-sig on at least one tile. This workshop encourages play, color, and experimentation with creating depth in layers.

Combine practicality and creativity through the art of sculpting and throwing functional ceramics. Create bowls, platters, vessels, and more that you can both use and admire every day. Through hands-on instruction and practice, learn essential hand-building techniques such as pinching, slab-building, coil-building, and surface treatments, as well as the basics of how to throw on a pottery wheel. Instruction will cover principles of form, texture, balance, and proportion, in addition to the fundamentals of the firing process. Develop your sculpting skills in a supportive and inspiring environment, and come away with handmade artworks that are both usable and personally expressive.
