This two-day workshop will focus on the use of the palette knife, the freedom it affords and the emphasis of color in your paintings. While the palette knife can be used to enhance brush paintings, it is a perfect tool for impressionistic as well as abstracted images rich in color. I will introduce the differences between brush painting and knife painting by executing 2 small paintings of the same subject with the different tools as I briefly review issues of composition, value, and color mixing. Casting molten metal is one of the oldest metal techniques dating back thousands of years. Students will learn how to work both hard and soft wax. These wax objects will be cast in sterling silver incorporating the lost wax casting technique. This class will cover calculating wax weights, spruing of waxes, safety issues and finishing. Students will explore charcoal as the perfect drawing medium for expressive mark making and develop a personal approach to loose, aggressive mark making with a combination of additive and subtractive techniques using charcoal and erasers for mark making and developing grounds. While charcoal will be the primary medium, eventually students will be encouraged to combine other media such as conte crayon and spray paint. This fun workshop gives you the chance to play with glass! You will create your own triple dipper platter using glass as your canvas. No painting experience is necessary! This is a fun workshop so bring a friend and create something new! Once you’ve finished your creations, Kathy will take them to her studio, fire them in the kiln and then return the finished plates to the Academy for you to pick up a week later.
