In this workshop, we will explore the essential role light plays in the visual arts. Without light, there is only darkness, and nothing to depict. Among the various sources of illumination, natural outdoor light stands out as the most prevalent, providing a full spectrum of color and revealing unique characteristics of subjects. Whether diffused, direct, or casting shadows, light transforms the way we perceive objects. Workshop includes lessons, demonstrations, Q&A and feedback. You’ll have access to the video recording of the class for an entire year, allowing you to replay and practice the techniques at your own pace.

A good painting has a lot of elements that contribute to its success. Color, value, technique and having a clear focus. All of these principles are explored by Aline, emphasizing looking at shapes in an abstract way in order to create illustrative paintings. Working from their own photo references, students will transform these into oil or pastel paintings using the principles of color, value and design. Along with a painting demonstration each day, Aline will talk about understanding color in terms of temperature, intensity and value while translating those ideas using pastel and oil technique. She will also emphasize the concept of creating shapes and carving back on them in order to achieve a painterly finish.

While artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, John Marin, Aurthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Charles Demuth were actively adapting modernism to an American sensibility, another group of painters turned their back on the city and set their sights on rural America. Portraying a landscape and lifestyle that was rapidly retreating, or never actually existed, artists like Thomas Hart Benton, John Curry, and Grant Wood created a new rural mythology. Historically, these groups have been viewed as in opposition. This talk will look at the tension between two seemingly divergent visions of America and consider how they reflect broader inclinations in the U.S. in the early 20th century.

Why flowers? I have always been drawn to painting flowers in my work. To me, flowers represent the healing power of beauty. I believe that the world could use a little more beauty (and art). I am delighted to share my love of flowers and my process of painting with all of you! Come arrange, sketch and paint flowers with me. During this five-day intensive workshop, we will explore shape, line, and color through a variety of expressions, including sketching, collage, and painting.
