"Methods of the Masters: More Great Women Painters"
Sundays, May 17 - June 28, 2026

Explore the methods of some of the greatest painters in recent art history. Notable women artists including Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Cecilia Beaux, Gwenn John, Jane Freilicher, Elaine de Kooning, and Vanessa Bell will provide the basis for weekly painting projects. Learn from, and gain an increased appreciation for, these masters through an examination of their materials, color palettes, working methods, and histories through visual examples, discussions, video demonstrations, and tailored painting projects that will be critiqued by the instructor for helpful feedback. Class meetings will be held on Zoom, and assignments and asynchronous class content will be posted on Canvas, PAFA’s online learning platform. Open to all levels of experience and all media: oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel.

"A New Perspective, Part 1 - The Train (Ages 13 yrs to adult)"
June 10, 2026

Join me and challenge yourself to paint a landscape from a bird’s eye view. Using a photo of an aerial scene (photo provided), we will examine how this perspective changes our approach to drawing and painting. The class will begin by drawing (or tracing) the picture and clarifying with permanent ink. Then we will apply color, adding additional layers of color using a variety of watercolor techniques - wet on wet, dry brush, layering, and detailing - to build depth and subtle clarity.

"Spontaneous Abstraction Workshop"
July 11-12, 2026

Many artists can feel frustrated in front of a blank canvas, unsure of how to start and what to paint. Paint with confidence by learning techniques to tap into your intuitive process and find inspiration more easily! Experienced instruction and advice will push students to take chances and explore unexpected directions and accidental marks to achieve artistic discoveries. Students will use line, color and space, and editing possibilities to create busy/calm areas and focal points in their paintings as they work from personal imagery, expression, and imagination. Instruction will take the form of PowerPoint presentation/examples, formal direction from modern and contemporary artists, and one-on-on critiques in Zoom sessions that are geared toward open painting time in a classroom-like setting. Painting experience recommended.
