"Sewing the Land I and II: fused, collaged, and quilted landscapes"
January 6-10, 2020

Each participant will create one or two landscape quilts along with several small studies. The class will explore different approaches to representing landscape, including those of artists in a variety of media. Sue will then show students how to look at the landscape, analyze it, and translate it to fabric using several fused construction methods to help them each accomplish their goals. For those that are taking this workshop for the second time, a more ambitious project can be pursued. Sue began making landscape images from raw edges, selvedges, and other odds and ends from scrap bags. From there she has gone on to add other techniques and develop a large series of work inspired by wetlands and prairies.

"Painting with Wool at Tanque Verde Ranch"
February 10-14, 2020

In this workshop students will explore the diversity of using wool fibers as a “painting” medium by diving into the world of two-dimensional needle felting. Needle felting is a process that uses barbed needles to attach fibers to a base textile, often wool felt or linen. Dani will introduce techniques to help students learn how to create different effects with wool fibers, including how to blend, layer, and create different textures to compose beautiful fiber art. Students will also explore how to use color in impactful ways. Other topics will include useful tools for felting, exploring different materials and textiles, the forgiving nature and breadth of the medium, and framing and presentation techniques for wool paintings.

"Improvisational Exercises: Part I at Tanque Verde Ranch"
November 30 - December 4, 2020

This brand new 5-day class has been specifically developed for students desirous of being far more experimental using machine-piecing techniques. Students will be expected to work spontaneously and intuitively with nontraditional quilt-making techniques as they explore design exercises that promote improvisational approaches to composition without benefit of “pre-planning” and “intellectualizing.” The workshop will be used as a basis for flexing muscle memory in developing a more fluid approach to cutting improvisationally all sorts of shapes and lines. Emphasis will be placed on forming new configurations that could be used as the motif or subject matter of a figure/ground composition. Color, and the values of color, from light to dark, will be emphasized in all exercises.
